This is part 1 of a tutorial on how to set up a new community in Hive through the @PeakD interface (front end). Part 1 deals more with general information about communities. I will provide a walkthrough of the process in part 2 as I form a new community called Blockchain Vampires.
Part 1: Understanding Communities On The Hive Blockchain.
What is a community?
A community is a unique identification (special user) on the Hive Blockchain where regular users can subscribe and post content. The community is established by a Hive user and the cost to set up a community is Three Hive. A community is a place for like-minded users to share content about a particular subject.
Where is a community established?
A community can be established on Hive.blog. Also, a community can be established on Hive through several Interfaces (Front-Ends). An interface (Front-End) is an application that has been developed to make posting information on the Hive Blockchain easier. @ecency ECENCY WEBSITE and @peakd PEAKD WEBSITE are two Front-Ends that make forming a new community easy. I will use PeakD in part 2, however, the process is similar in other Front-Ends because the same community will appear across the Hive Blockchain.
Does this mean that the community appears in multiple Front-Ends?
Yes, that's correct. A community started in Ecency will also appear on PeakD. In addition, the community may appear on Interfaces (Front-Ends) that do not have the feature of forming a new community.
So, if a Front-End does not have the option to form a community, will my community posts show on that Front-End's website?
Sometimes. Let's consider https://leofinance.io/ LeoFinance is a great site that started as a Hive Community. The content on LeoFinance is pulled from the Hive BlockChain, however, the only posts that show on https://leofinance.io/ are posts made in the LeoFinance community or have LeoFinance as a TAG. So a post made in a community other than LeoFinance will not show on LeoFinance unless the author included the TAG LeoFinance. See below for an example of tags added to a post. Notice that LeoFinance is tagged, so this post will appear on https://leofinance.io/ in addition to where it was originally posted.
So why form a new community on Hive?
Hive is ever growing. There are great communities already on Hive. Some of my favorites are: Comedy Open Mic, HiveGarden, Splinterlands, and Hagro
However, I have some interest that don't fit into an established community. For example, I wanted a community for a small group of friends that meet in real life to come up with ideas for Hive. We call the community HiveFive and we hope to add virtual members as we grow. Likewise, Blockchain Vampires is one of our first fun projects from HiveFive so I am formed a community about Blockchain Vampires
In future posts, I will discuss the roles in a community. Part 2 of this series will be released in a few days and I add a link here.
