The Biomedical Engineer in the Operating Room

Muy buenas amigos lectores, en esta oportunidad les voy a mostrar el trabajo de un ingeniero biomédico y del técnico biomédico (electromédico) durante una cirugía, estoy muy seguro que no conocen las funciones de este profesional y más aún que este presente en una operación. Sé que este contenido te será muy útil, para que puedas hablar de algo nuevo con tus amigos, así como conseguiré que esta profesión relativamente nueva sea aún más reconocida.

La ingeniería biomédica es una profesión que comenzó en los años 70 en Estados Unidos de América como perfil profesional, aunque la historia revela que el uso de esta profesión se implantó desde la civilización egipcia, cuando se utilizaba una prótesis para un pie hace más de 3000 años.

Biomedical engineering is a profession that started in the 1970s in the United States of America as a professional profile, although history reveals that the use of this profession was implemented since the Egyptian civilisation, when a toe prosthesis was used for a foot more than 3000 years ago.

En la actualidad la ingeniería biomédica aplica los conocimientos de la ingeniería en el campo de la biología y la medicina, su dedicación es muy amplia la cual va desde el diseño y construcción de equipos médicos y sanitarios, así como de implantes biomédicos entre otros, a nivel asistencial es una de las profesiones más activas dentro de una entidad de salud, esta se encarga del mantenimiento y cuidado de los equipos médicos y biomédicos, junto con el manejo de algunos equipos y en los últimos años se está agregando el acompañamiento de los médicos en cirugías y emergencias, debido al incremento cada vez mayor de los implantes biomédicos en los pacientes a nivel mundial.

Nowadays biomedical engineering applies the knowledge of engineering in the field of biology and medicine, its dedication is very extensive which goes from the design and construction of medical and sanitary equipment, as well as biomedical implants among others, at the care level is one of the most active professions within a health entity, This is in charge of the maintenance and care of medical and biomedical equipment, together with the handling of some equipment and in recent years is adding the accompaniment of doctors in surgeries and emergencies, due to the increasing increase of biomedical implants in patients worldwide.

En Venezuela, en algunos hospitales (y esto va en aumento), la dependencia del Ingeniero Biomédico y del Técnico Biomédico ha hecho que su responsabilidad en el área quirúrgica esté asignada a varias tareas, siendo la primera la preparación de los equipos médicos antes de cada intervención, así como durante la misma, la manipulación de algunos de estos (recibiendo indicaciones del médico líder de la cirugía), y la segunda atender cualquier falla de los equipos durante la operación, evitando así poner en riesgo la vida del paciente.

In Venezuela, in some hospitals (and this is increasing), the dependence on the Biomedical Engineer and the Biomedical Technician has meant that their responsibility in the surgical area is assigned to various tasks, the first being the preparation of the medical equipment before each intervention, as well as during surgery, the manipulation of some of these (receiving indications from the leading doctor of the surgery), and the second being to attend to any equipment failure during the operation, thus avoiding putting the patient's life at risk.

Al finalizar una intervención quirúrgica, si se ha realizado a un paciente con una patología infecto-contagiosa, el biomédico debe desinfectar los equipos que han tenido contacto directo con el paciente, como la máquina de anestesia, la torre de laparoscopia, entre otros...

At the end of a surgery, if it was performed on a patient with an infectious-contagious pathology, the biomedical must disinfect the equipment that had direct contact with the patient, such as the anaesthesia machine, the laparoscopy tower, among others...

El personal biomédico también debe estar pendiente de que se cumplan las medidas de bioseguridad en un área quirúrgica, como asegurarse de que el aire acondicionado tenga una temperatura baja adecuada para evitar la proliferación de patógenos, que el aire sea unidireccional y que los filtros EPA estén en buen estado; al mismo tiempo, debe verificar los productos químicos utilizados para la desinfección del área, para que no causen daños en el equipo y tengan un alto índice de desinfección.

Biomedical personnel must also be aware that biosafety measures are complied with in a surgical area, such as ensuring that the air conditioning has an adequate low temperature to prevent the proliferation of pathogens, that the air is unidirectional and that the EPA filters are in good condition; at the same time, they must verify the chemical products used to disinfect the area, so that they do not cause damage to the equipment and have a high disinfection rate.

Durante la cirugía, como se mencionó anteriormente, su función es muy básica, sólo hay que seguir las instrucciones del médico jefe al manejar cualquier equipo que no requiera entrenamiento profesional, por ejemplo, la unidad de electrocirugía (aumentar o disminuir la potencia), la torre de laparoscopia (aumentar o disminuir la potencia de la luz, la insuflación y la calidad del video), mover la cama de operaciones, entre otros.

During surgery, as mentioned above, its function is very basic, just follow the lead physician's instructions when handling any equipment that does not require professional training, e.g. electrosurgical unit (increase or decrease power), laparoscopy tower (increase or decrease light power, insufflation and video quality), moving the operating bed, among others.

Para concluir, la presencia del profesional biomédico en el quirófano está adquiriendo tal importancia que en algunas universidades de todo el mundo se están ofreciendo especializaciones en esta área a los ingenieros biomédicos.

To conclude, the presence of the biomedical professional in the operating theatre is becoming so important that in some universities around the world, specialisations in this area are being offered to biomedical engineers.
