When I was younger I often heard the phrase "Too heavenly minded to be of any earthly good" - anyone else remember that?
Recently I've been seeing a lot of posts about far off galaxies, black holes, exoplanets and the size of the universe to name a few.
> I sometimes wonder if we are often "Too deep-space minded to be of any planetary use"?
Sure, these things are interesting, amazing often beautiful, yet how much time, resource, people and money do they chew up that could be spent actually getting us to the Moon and Mars and even beyond.
Don't get me wrong, this is serious science with some very skilled people and I find it interesting. The question is, would I have found it more interesting if we already had large space stations and habitats on the Moon and Mars - I think I would.
If all that effort had been put into endeavors closer to Earth, how much further into space would we already be?
Am I alone in this thinking? Would it have made a difference?
