Hi everyone ! I hope you are doing well.
Today I wanted to share with you the memories of a two day hike on the border of Savoie and Italy. It was last year and we went with a small group of friends. I should point out straight away that all the photographs in this article are mine and were taken last summer.
We set off from much further down the valley and made our way up to a small artificial lake held back by a dam. A very impressive building as are most of these constructions.
Shortly after, we parked near the refuge that you can see on the map later in the article...
Once we arrived at the refuge, we had lunch there as the day was already well underway. Further up the mountain, several shepherds' dogs were herding sheep which, at this distance, were no bigger than crumbs on the green carpet of the mountain pastures.
One of these dogs came up to us while we were eating and I regret not taking a picture of it, for I had never seen such a muscular dog, all bone, nerve and stamina.
The meal was mostly protein, with charcuterie and cheese being the majority. We didn't eat in 5 minutes, but we didn't stay for hours either. We had a long drive ahead of us...!
Speaking of roads, here's the one we came by, a small serpentine of beaten earth in the heart of the valley...
Then the climb began... On the picture below, you can see the place we were going to go through. This is the white area on the right. These are snowdrifts, remnants of snow from the previous winter. I don't think they lasted long after we passed through, because even at this altitude it was very warm.
After the herd of cows typical of the region and which produce the milk from which Beaufort cheese is made, the slope became steeper and it started to climb seriously.
We had already covered part of the route, at last we had gained some fields and height, but the day was far from over. The carpet of green that you can see in the foreground of the picture above is made of "monk's rhubarb" a wild species of the same name and just as edible. I didn't mind eating it as long as we came across it to take in some of the sugar along the walk.
Then the real climb began ! The path was cut into the side of a cliff and I couldn't stop thinking about the men who had cut this pass all day long with rudimentary tools and in conditions that one can imagine were complicated...
I am not afraid of heights, but I must admit that it was very impressive! By the way, below, you have the memorial plaque of a worker who died on the site... RIP and thanks for your work...
We're starting to see the end of it, but it's not over yet. We can feel that we are getting out of the rift and that we are gradually getting somewhere...
... Indeed, here are some directional signs. Our little group came from the left, from the Gitaz refuge.
Here we are, we finally arrived on a small plateau. The heat was really present and I think we would have given a lot to have a little shade, even if only for ten minutes !
Here is the scene that revealed itself to us as we emerged from the fault and the narrow cliff path. Well, here I tightened the frame a bit on this little chalet, but you will be able to see a bit further how great it was.
At the back of the chalet were the collapsed remains of another building, much larger and whose traces made me think of a ship's hull half-buried in the earth. This rekindled my desire for archaeology ^^
All around us, we were surrounded by streams and torrents that flowed down the slopes and hollows of the land. I can't help but feel how wonderful are the forces of Nature that have sculpted, minute after millennium, all the landscapes that surround us !
We made a short stop in the shade of an uninhabited chalet but as happens at sea or in the mountains, the weather changed very quickly and we had to go back down to the refuge. You can see it slightly in the last photo, but I guarantee you that with the rain and the storm we had to endure an hour later, we were right to turn back !
It's another lesson, don't take on a stronger person than you are and the few times I've been too presumptuous in the wilderness, I've almost paid with my life... As you can see, this is not the case !
I remember when I was taking that last picture, I thought "But why do I have to go back down?" I really couldn't see the reason, and yet, I went back down... On the other hand, if one day, you don't hear from me anymore, that's where you should look for me :)

Salut à tous ! J'espère que vous allez bien.
Aujourd'hui, je voulais partager avec vous les souvenirs d'une randonnée de deux jours à la frontière de la Savoie et de l'Italie. C'était l'année dernière et nous étions partis avec un petit groupe d'amis. Je précise tout de suite que toutes les photographies dans cet article sont les miennes et qu'elles ont été prises l'été dernier.
Nous sommes partis depuis bien plus bas dans la vallée et nous avons rallié les hauteurs jusqu'à un petit lac artificiel retenu par un barrage. Un édifice très impressionnant comme le sont quasiment toutes ces constructions.
Peu après, nous nous sommes garés non loin du refuge que vous pourrez voir sur la carte un peu plus loin dans l'article.
Arrivés au refuge, nous avons déjeuné sur place car la journée était déjà bien entamée. Plus loin sur les hauteurs, plusieurs chiens de bergers rassemblaient des moutons qui, à cette distance, n'étaient pas plus gros que des miettes sur le tapis verdoyant des alpages.
Un de ces chiens est venu nous voir pendant que nous mangions et je regrette de ne pas l'avoir pris en photo, car je n'avais jamais vu un chien aussi musculeux, tout en os, nerfs et vigueur.
Le repas était surtout composé de protéines, avec de la charcuterie et du fromage en majorité. Nous n'avons pas mangé en 5 minutes, mais nous ne sommes pas restés des heures non plus. Une longue route nous attendait...!
En parlant de route, voici celle par laquelle nous sommes arrivée, un petit serpentin de terre battue au coeur du vallon...
Puis l'ascension a commencé... Sur la photo du dessous, vous pouvez voir l'endroit par lequel nous allions passer. Il s'agit de la partie blanche tout à droite. Ce sont des névés, des restes de neige de l'hiver précédent. À mon avis, ils n'ont pas dû durer longtemps après notre passage, car même à cette altitude, la chaleur était importante.
Après le troupeau de vaches typiques de la région et qui produisent le lait dont on fait le Beaufort, la pente s'est faite plus rude et ça a commencer à monter sérieusement.
Voilà déjà une partie de la route déjà faite, enfin nous avions pris un peu de champs et de hauteur, mais la journée était loin d'être finie. Le tapis de vert que vous pouvez voir au premier plan de la photo du dessus est composé de "rhubarbe des moines" une espèce sauvage du même nom et tout aussi comestible. Je ne me suis pas privé d'en manger tant que nous en croisions pour reprendre un peu de sucre tout au long de la marche.
Puis, la vraie montée a débutée ! Le chemin était taillé à flanc de falaise et je n'ai pas cessé de songer aux hommes qui avaient taillé cette passe à longueur de journée avec des outils rudimentaires et dans des conditions que l'on imagine compliquées...
Je n'ai pas le vertige, mais je dois reconnaître que c'était tout de même très impressionnant ! D'ailleurs ci-dessous, vous avez la plaque commémorative d'un ouvrier mort sur le chantier... RIP et merci pour ton travail...
On commence à en voir le bout, mais ce n'est pas encore fini. On sent bien qu'on sort de la faille et qu'on arrive petit à petit quelque part ...
... En effet, voilà quelques panneaux de directions. Notre petit groupe venait de la gauche, du refuge de la Gitaz.
Voilà, là nous sommes enfin arrivé sur un petit plateau. La chaleur était vraiment présente et je pense que nous aurions donné beaucoup pour avoir un peu d'ombre, ne serait-ce qu'une dizaine de minutes !
Voici la scène qui s'est dévoilée face à nous en sortant de la faille et du chemin étroit de la falaise. Bon, là j'ai un peu serré le cadre de l'image sur ce petit chalet, mais vous pourrez voir un peu loin à quel point c'était grandiose.
À l'arrière du chalet se trouvaient les restes effondrés d'une autre bâtisse, bien plus grande et dont les traces m'ont faites penser à une coque de bateau à demi-enfouie dans la terre. Là, ça a ravivé mes envies d'archéologie ^^
Tout autour de nous, nous étions cernés de ruisseaux et de torrents qui dévalaient les pentes et les creux du reliefs. Je ne peux m'empêcher de ressentir comme merveilleuses les forces de la Nature qui ont sculptées, minutes après millénaires, tous les paysages qui nous environnent !
Nous avons fait un petit arrêt à l'ombre de u chalet inhabité mais comme cela arrive en mer ou en l'occurence en montagne, le temps a très vite changé et nous avons dû redescendre vers le refuge. On le voit légèrement sur la dernière photo, mais je vous garantit qu'avec la pluie et l'orage que nous avons essuyé une heure plus tard, nous avons bien fait de rebrousser chemin !
C'est encore une leçon, il ne faut pas se mesurer à plus fort que soi et les rares fois où j'ai été trop présomptueux dans des régions sauvages, j'ai vraiment failli le payer de ma vie... Comme vous le voyez, ce n'est pas le cas !
Je me rappelle qu'en prenant cette dernière photo, je me suis dis "Mais pourquoi je dois redescendre ?" Je ne voyait vraiment pas la raison, et pourtant, je suis redescendu... En revanche, si un jour, vous n'avez plus de mes nouvelles, c'est là-bas qu'il faudra me chercher :)
