Nanda Devi Temple located in Almora is one of the most important and ancient temples of Uttarakhand. This temple is dedicated to Nanda Devi, who is considered to be an incarnation of Mother Bhagwati and a form of Shailputri.
The Nanda Devi temple was built by the Chand kings, who considered Nanda Devi as their Kuldevi. The history of this temple is said to be more than 1000 years old, and it was established about 200 years ago in the Chandeshwar temple complex. Earlier Nanda Devi was worshiped in Malla Mahal, which is currently the court of Almora district.
There is evidence of worship of Nanda Devi in religious texts, Upanishads and Puranas. In Bhavishya Purana, Nanda is described as one of the Navdurga, which includes Mahalakshmi, Nanda, Kshemkari, Shivduti, Mahatunda, Bhramari, Chandramandala, Revati and Harsiddhi.
This temple is a great example of Kumaoni craft style, whose stone carvings on the walls attract devotees. This temple is an integral part of the rich historical and cultural tradition of Almora.
Every year in the month of September, a grand fair is organized at the Nanda Devi temple in Almora, which is called Nanda Devi Mela. This fair has been a part of this temple for more than 400 years. In this fair, which starts from Panchami Tithi, two grand goddess idols are made from Kadli Stambh (banana tree).
