It´s now 4 months since we´ve "moved" to Portugal and other than expected it wasn´t really that easy. We are already thinking of taking a break from Portugal early next year and do some traveling again, but that´s a different story you will learn more from soon enough.
Until that I´m wishing you all a Merry Christmas and show you some more photos from our recent Lisbon trip.
There is a few things Portugal is famous for and one of them is their tiles. Especially in Lisbon it is very hard to find any house that is not tiled from the outside. Here they are called Azujelos and they come in many different colours and with endless motives. The ones on the building above I found interesting as it is a whole painting, just on tiles.
The next thing and probably even more famous for Portugals tradition is canned fish. Yes, you heard right, Portuguese are crazy about it. They have whole stores only with canned fish.
As far as I know the tradition started with Sardines, but nowadays you will find many different fish canned and preserved for who knows how long. The only fish I ever had out of a can is tuna and I was speechless as we entered that one famous shop.
Cans, cans and more cans of fish. Sardines, Tuna, filets, pate, whatever you want they have it. But the best thing about all these cans is, that they do not just look boring like you know from your supermarket. They are colourful and in different shapes. So it´s not only a culinary delight but also something for the eye.
Canned sardines are a popular souvenir, but for Portuguese people of course its more than this. It´s a healthy little snack. The locals love it and it´s mostly served just with a good bread or some jacket potatoes and a good glas of red wine.
I was just blown away by the amount of different cans in that store alone and you will find dozens of these stores all over Lisbon.
Most of the sights we´ve visited on our way to short Lisbon trip I´ve already shown you in my previous posts. But there are still some you should definitely not miss out on and one of them is Arco da Rua Augusta, a Triumphal arch that was completed in 1873.
It stands directly at the Praça do Comércio together with many other beautiful buildings steeped in history.
I can give you one really good advise. If you come to Lisbon, bring plenty of time, you will need it. We´ve spent only 3 nights in that awesome city and have seen nothing compared to what it offers.
But one last thing we´ve found on our last day and the way out of the city. A perfect spot to see the famous and beautiful Bridge Ponte 25 de Abril that leads over the Tejo river connects the city of Lisbon with the Costa da Caparica.
I really enjoyed the view from up there and can´t wait to visit Lisbon another time.
