The Drive – A Road Trip With a View
I set off for Maastricht with a good friend, a playlist that swung between indie and classic rock, and the hope of a stress-free drive. The sun was shining, the GPS was behaving, and Dutch traffic. Ok, let’s just say it kept me on my toes. But after navigating German city traffic, no Dutch roundabout was going to rattle me.
Once in Maastricht, I found a spot to park near the central place close to everything. Another perfect match.
I love starting a city trip with a walk along the water—it sets the right tone for a day of exploring.
Wandering the City or Getting Lost on Purpose
I had no plan, no list of must-see attractions, just the freedom to wander.
Maastricht is the kind of city that invites you to get lost in its small alleys, past stylish boutiques, charming bookstores, and cafés that practically demand you stop for a pastry.
At some point, I stumbled onto Vrijthof, the city’s central square, surrounded by stunning historic buildings. It felt like the perfect place for a break. I ordered a steaming Chocomel, the Dutch take on hot chocolate—thicker, richer, and served in a bright yellow mug that practically glowed in the winter sun.
they had an offer for delicious "hot Applecake" or "hot Apfelstrudel" but I was still full.
Anyway, the view was nice!
By the Maas – Bridges, Boats, and a Quiet Moment
Recharged, I wandered toward the Maas River. Maastricht from this angle looked like something out of a postcard, some classic European charm, with old bridges, lively promenades, and boats drifting by at a slow, deliberate pace.
I crossed the Sint Servaasbrug, the Netherlands’ oldest bridge, and paused. There’s something peaceful about standing over a river, watching people stroll along the banks and ships glide through the water. For a moment, time slowed down. No deadlines, no rush—just me, the city, and the steady movement of the river.
The City’s Vibe – Cool, Stylish, and a Bit of Bad Luck
Maastricht has a vibe I really liked
this young, effortlessly stylish, but never trying too hard. Shopping here wasn’t about big-name brands (though those were there too), but about small, unique stores that felt carefully curated.
I had one particular stop in mind. A vinyl shop I had marked on Google Maps but when I arrived, I was met with a locked door. Closed on Mondays. Of course. A rookie mistake, and one I wouldn’t make next time.

Final Thoughts – Definitely Coming Back
Maastricht surprised me, in the best way. It’s not a city that overwhelms you with tourist attractions, even if the city has a few. Maastrich, no - it invites you to explore, slow down, and enjoy. Whether it’s history, food, or just the atmosphere, there’s something here worth coming back for.
Next time? That vinyl shop will be open, I’ll find new spots to explore, other hidden streets and I might just have another Chocomel by the river.
On my way back to the car, I stumbled upon the quirky and captivating statue "De Wiekeneer" on Wijcker Brugstraat. This bronze sculpture, crafted by Dutch artist Frans Carlier in 1985, instantly grabbed my attention. The statue, with its man holding his hat and its unique horizontal sections, seemed to have a playful, slightly tipsy charm.
As I stood there, I couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of this statue welcoming guests to the nearby Hotel Beaumont. The locals affectionately named it "De Wiekeneer," symbolizing the future of the Wyck district. It felt like the statue was giving me a nod and a wink, saying, "Welcome to Wyck, enjoy your stay and come back for another visit to Maastricht!" (Whenever the record shops are open)
Exploring this statue was a delightful and fun experience. It made me appreciate the whimsical side of Maastricht's art scene.
