When traveling it's good to have some kind of planning - unless you are a free and spontaneous soul who goes where the wind takes you, which is exciting and risky - but you also have to leave room for surprises, unforeseen events and those changes in planning that most of the time end up in memorable experiences, perhaps more memorable because of their very unpredictability. Receiving something when you expect it is not the same as when it comes out of the blue.
A la hora de viajar es bueno tener algún tipo de planificación - a menos que seas un alma libre y espontánea que va adonde la lleve el viento, lo que es emocionante y arriesgado - pero también hay que dejar espacio para las sorpresas, los imprevistos y esos cambios en la planificación que la gran mayoría de las veces terminan en experiencias memorables, acaso más memorables debido a su misma imprevisibilidad. No es lo mismo recibir algo cuando lo esperas que cuando viene salido de la nada.
A few months ago I went on a trip to Argentina. The initial plan was to spend a week in Buenos Aires and then spend a few days in Uruguay before returning to the Argentine capital to spend the New Year and continue a few days to Cordoba and Mendoza. I didn't have it written down in stone or so immovable in my agenda, but it was the initial idea. However, due to life circumstances - budget, dates and other things - I could not go to Uruguay, which represented a setback in my desire to get to know another country, but it gave me a gift: almost a week more in Buenos Aires. As I had thought I would be there for less time I had thought of going to certain places, but I had not considered many others and in a conversation with some people who - like me - were passing through the capital, I heard Tigre mentioned. "What a curious name" I thought (Tigre is spanish for Tiger), before deciding to do some research. I discovered that Tigre was a city located north of Buenos Aires and that to get there I could take a train that in about forty minutes would take me there. The cost of the ticket was a little less than a dollar to go and the same to return. I remember saying to myself "Are you telling me that for less than two dollars I can go and see another city and that I can also do it on board a train, perhaps my favorite means of transportation?" Without thinking I decided that I would go that Saturday morning to see Tigre and for that I went to the Retiro Mitre Railroad Station to take the train that would leave me in that wildly named city. My initial trip plan did not include Tigre, nor a train ride, but I was grateful for this surprise addition to the itinerary.
Hace algunos meses fui de viaje a Argentina. El plan inicial era estar una semana en Buenos Aires y luego pasar unos días en Uruguay antes de volver a la capital argentina a pasar el año nuevo y seguir unos días hacia Córdoba y Mendoza. No lo tenía anotado en una piedra ni tan inamovible en mi agenda, pero era la idea inicial. Ahora bien, por cosas de la vida - presupuesto, fechas y otras cosas - no pude ir a Uruguay, lo que representó un revés en mi deseo de conocer otro país, pero me dio un regalo: casi una semana más en Buenos Aires. Como había pensado que estaría allí menos tiempo había pensado en ir a ciertos lugares, pero no había considerado muchos otros y en una conversación con algunas personas que - como yo - se encontraban de paso en la capital, escuché mencionar Tigre. "Qué nombre tan curioso", pensé, antes de decidirme a investigar un poco. Descubrí que Tigre era una ciudad ubicada al Norte de Buenos Aires y que para llegar allí podía tomar un tren que en unos cuarenta minutos me dejaría allí. El costo del boleto era de poco menos de un dólar para ir y lo mismo para volver. Recuerdo haberme dicho "¿Me estás diciendo que por menos de dos dólares puedo ir a conocer otra ciudad y que además puedo hacerlo a bordo de un tren, tal vez mi medio de transporte favorito?" Sin nada que pensar decidí que iría ese sábado por la mañana a conocer Tigre y para ello me fui a la Estación Retiro Ferrocarril Mitre a tomar el tren que me dejaría en esa ciudad de nombre salvaje. Mi plan inicial del viaje no incluía Tigre, ni un viaje en tren, pero agradecí esta incorporación sorpresiva al itinerario.
As soon as you arrive, you notice the river that - as it could not be different - is named after the city. Walking a couple of blocks you can stand on a bridge (see the cover photo of this post) and contemplate the river, the handicraft fair on one side and dozens of boats that cross the river day and night towards the Paraná Delta. On both sides of the river you can see houses, residential buildings, cafes and a lot of places that invite you to pass by and discover them. I remember that while I was watching the water running under the bridge and the sun illuminating the river, I started listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival songs in my head. It seemed like the perfect soundtrack.
Apenas llegar, se nota el río que - como no podía ser diferente - se llama como la ciudad. Al caminar un par de cuadras puede uno situarse en un puente (ver la foto de portada de este post) y contemplar el río, la feria de artesanías que se hace a un lado y decenas de embarcaciones que cruzan día y noche por el río hacia el Delta del Paraná. A ambos lados del río se pueden ver casas, edificios residenciales, cafeterías y un montón de lugares que te invitan a pasar y a descubrirlos. Recuerdo que mientras veía el agua correr debajo del puente y el sol iluminando el río, comencé a escuchar canciones de Creedence Clearwater Revival en mi cabeza. Me pareció el soundtrack perfecto.
I started walking along the river bank under the shade of some trees and I really enjoyed being able to walk through the city without losing sight of the river. On this bank, the one I was walking on, I could see restaurants, houses, squares and some museums, while on the other side of the river I could see a water park, some hotels, people sunbathing and in the middle, on the river current, dozens of boats, yachts and vessels, public and private, offering boat rides to the Paraná Delta and that in a matter of a couple of hours could take you through seven different rivers. I didn't take any of these boats - to be left for another visit - but being there, in the middle of that natural environment, was incredible, especially considering that a metropolis like Buenos Aires was only about 20 kilometers away. After walking for a while, I found some European tourists taking pictures of themselves on a sign with the name of Tigre and after offering them my help to take a picture of them all, they returned the favor and I was able to keep my picture sitting next to the letters. Behind, in the background, you can see an impressive museum which I will show you in another post. I spent only a few hours in Tigre - maybe about six - but I had an event to attend that afternoon and even if I had spent the whole afternoon there, it would not have been enough. To walk around the city, visit its museums, visit its squares, sail along the river, and discover its gastronomic offer, it would take at least three days, which is how long I plan to be there the next time I go, hopefully the same as this time, during the summer. Comencé a caminar por la costanera del río bajo la sombra de algunos árboles y me gustó mucho poder avanzar por la ciudad sin perder de vista el río. A esta orilla, la que yo transitaba, podía ver los restaurantes, las casas, plazas y algunos museos, mientras al otro lado del río pude ver un parque acuático, algunos hoteles, personas tomando el sol y en medio, sobre la corriente fluvial, decenas de botes, yates y embarcaciones, públicas y privadas que ofrecían paseos en bote hacia el Delta del Paraná y que en cuestión de un par de horas podían llevarte a través de siete ríos diferentes. No tomé ninguno de estos botes - queda pendiente para otra visita - pero estar allí, en medio de ese ambiente natural, fue increíble, sobre todo tomando en cuenta que una metrópolis como Buenos Aires estaba apenas a unos 20 kilómetros de distancia. Tras caminar un rato, encontré a unos turistas europeos que se tomaban fotos en un aviso con el nombre de Tigre y tras ofrecerles mi ayuda para tomarles una foto en la que aparecieran todos, me devolvieron el favor y pude conservar mi fotografía sentado junto a las letras. Detrás, al fondo, se puede ver un impresionante museo que les mostraré en otra publicación. Pasé pocas horas en Tigre - acaso unas seis - pero tenía un evento al que asistir esa tarde y aunque hubiera pasado allí toda la tarde, no habría sido suficiente. Para caminar por la ciudad, recorrer sus museos, conocer sus plazas, navegar por el río, conocer su oferta gastronómica, harían falta al menos tres días, que es lo que pienso estar allí la próxima vez que vaya, ojalá igual que esta vez, durante el verano. So if you have the chance to visit Buenos Aires and you have time to take a walk around, add Tigre to your list. In addition to the above, nearby is also the Mate Museum - but I was told this after I returned from the place - so despite being a small city there's a lot to see. And the next time that during your trip something doesn't go as planned don't regret it, take the opportunity to discover a new corner, to live a different experience, to rest ... you will always find something worthwhile, I have no doubt, any of you have been to the Argentine capital? did you know of the existence of Tigre? Además de lo mencionado, cerca también está el Museo del Mate - pero esto me lo contaron después de haber vuelto del lugar - por lo que a pesar de ser una ciudad pequeña hay mucho que ver.
