In some previous posts I have told you that Chile is a country with a very rich and varied geography and an area of 5,000 kilometers long and 200 km wide. There are therefore an infinite number of cities, towns, national parks, natural beauties, lakes, lagoons, rivers... I don't think theres a person who knows the country from north to south. All its regions, yes, and many of its cities, but all of Chile? It would be an almost impossible task, although a beautiful project.
En algunos post previos les he contado que Chile es un país con una geografía muy rica y variada y una superficie de 5.000 kilómetros de largo por 200 Km de ancho. Existen por tanto una infinidad de ciudades, poblaciones, parques nacionales, bellezas naturales, lagos, lagunas, ríos... no creo que exista una persona que conozca el país de Norte a Sur. Todas sus regiones, sí, y muchas de sus ciudades, pero ¿todo Chile? Sería una tarea casi imposible, aunque un hermoso proyecto.
I have traveled around the national territory more than the average Santiago resident, but I don't know so many cities as to be able to say which is the best or most beautiful city in all of Chile. For many, Valdivia is the safest city and they would live there if they could; others love Pucón; there are those who prefer the North, Iquique or San Pedro de Atacama; others speak wonders of Punta Arenas, Coyhaique or Puerto Natales; I have seen pictures of all these places, I have known some of them and I understand why people love them. However, if I had to choose a city to live in - other than Santiago - and if I had to base it only on the cities I have been able to know, above Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas, above the beaches of Viña del Mar or the colorful Valparaíso - a city I love - I would choose without thinking twice the magical city of Frutillar. This beautiful city of Chile is located in the south, in the Lakes Region, in front of Lake Llanquihue and if you continue along the road, when you leave Frutillar behind you will find Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt; Surrounding the lake you can get to Puerto Octay, another beautiful city, but of all these, in my opinion, the most beautiful is Frutillar, specifically the area of Frutillar Bajo, with the waterfront, the pier, the theater and that spectacular view of the Osorno volcano; the other sector of the city is called Frutillar Alto and is a more normal area; let's say it looks more like any other city. Logically the buses arrive at the end of Frutillar Alto and then, taking a cab, you go down to the other sector through an avenue that allows you to appreciate, from a distance, the lake and the volcano.
Yo he viajado por el territorio nacional más que el santiaguino promedio, pero tampoco conozco tantísimas ciudades como para asegurar cuál es la mejor ciudad o la más hermosa de todo Chile. Para muchos, Valdivia es la ciudad más seguro y vivirían allí si pudieran; otros aman Pucón; hay quienes prefieren el Norte, Iquique o San Pedro de Atacama; otros hablan maravillas de Punta Arenas, Coyhaique o Puerto Natales; yo he visto fotos de todos estos lugares, he conocido algunos y entiendo el por qué la gente los ama. Sin embargo, si yo tuviera que escoger una ciudad para vivir - distinta a Santiago - y si tuviera que basarme únicamente en las ciudades que he podido conocer, por encima de Puerto Montt o Puerto Varas, por encima de las playas de Viña del Mar o del colorido de Valparaíso - ciudad que amo - elegiría sin pensarlo dos veces la mágica ciudad de Frutillar. Esta hermosa ciudad de Chile está situada al Sur, en la Región de Los Lagos, frente al Lago Llanquihue y si uno sigue por la carretera, al dejar atrás Frutillar se encuentra con Puerto Varas y Puerto Montt; rodeando el lago se puede llegar a Puerto Octay, otra ciudad preciosa, pero de todas estas, en mi opinión, la más bonita es Frutillar, específicamente la zona de Frutillar Bajo, con la costanera, el muelle, el teatro y esa espectacular vista del volcán Osorno; el otro sector se la ciudad se llama Frutillar Alto y es una zona más normal; digamos que se parece más a una ciudad cualquiera. Lógicamente los buses llegan al terminar en Frutillar Alto y luego, al tomar un taxi se baja al otro sector a través de una avenida que permite apreciar, desde la distancia el lago y el volcán.

One of the first attractions that one comes across in the lower part of the city - and which I didn't count on - is the German Colonial Museum, a beautiful space of history, migration and integration, and which has been preserved with very few modifications to its original structure. This beautiful place that is a window to the past deserves a whole separate post, so for now I won't tell you much more, just add it to your travel itinerary.
Uno de los primeros atractivos con los que uno se encuentra en la parte baja de la ciudad - y con el cual yo no contaba - es el Museo Colonial Alemán, un espacio hermoso de historia, de migración e integración, y que se ha conservado con muy pocas modificaciones de su estructura original. Este hermoso lugar que es una ventana al pasado merece un post entero aparte, así que por ahora no les diré mucho más, sólo que lo agreguen a su itinerario del viaje.
Then, when you get to the Costanera, what stands out the most is the Osorno volcano, one of the most famous in Chile. You can walk along the shore of the lake without losing sight of the imposing volcano and find different places, spots for photos, sculptures, city signs, cafes, restaurants... one of the most striking was a sculpture of a piano (see photos) and I didn't waste the opportunity to take a picture with my hands on the keys. I even recorded some videos in which I seem to be playing a song, but don't be fooled: I know as much about piano as I know about nuclear physics: nothing. I also saw a beautiful street, with a view of what looked like a church and a clock that I loved and that I leave here in a close-up (it's one of my favorite photos of the trip), but undoubtedly the most striking of all the landscape is the pier. I don't know why I've always been a lover of docks and this wooden structure that goes into the lake and allows a closer view of the volcano and the city in the distance is one of the most magical places I've ever seen. I only visited it during the day, but how beautiful it must be at night when it's illuminated! Panoramic photos of the pier and from it on a clear day or in the golden hour at sunset are a sight to behold, but even better must be to experience moments like that firsthand. I only spent a few hours in Frutillar, but it was enough to burn itself into my heart and make me want to come back.
Luego, cuando se llega a la Costanera, lo que más destaca es el volcán Osorno, uno de los más famosos en Chile. Uno puede caminar por la orilla del lago sin perder de vista el imponente volcán y encontrarse con diferentes lugares, spots para fotos, esculturas, avisos de la ciudad, cafeterías, restaurantes... una de las que más me llamó la atención fue una escultura de un piano (ver fotos) y no desperdicié la oportunidad de sacarme una foto con mis manos sobre las teclas. Incluso grabé algunos videos en los que parezco estar tocando alguna canción, pero no se dejen engañar: sé de piano lo mismo que de física nuclear: nada. También vi una calle preciosa, con vista a lo que parecía una iglesia y un reloj que me encantó y que se los dejo acá en un close-up (es una de mis fotos favoritas del viaje), pero sin duda lo más llamativo de todo el paisaje es el muelle. No sé por qué razón siempre he sido amante de los muelles y esta estructura de madera que se interna en el lago y permite ver más de cerca el volcán y ver a la distancia la ciudad es uno de los lugares más mágicos que he conocido. Sólo lo visité de día, pero ¡lo hermoso que debe ser de noche cuando está iluminado! Las fotos panorámicas del muelle y desde él en un día despejado o en la hora dorada al atardecer son un espectáculo, pero aún mejor debe ser experimentar momentos así en carne propia. Apenas estuve unas horas en Frutillar, pero fue suficiente para grabarse a fuego dentro de mi ser y generarme ganas de volver.

When I return to that city, which I hope will be soon, there's one place I must see inside: the Lake Theater. An impressive wooden structure that is even more beautiful inside because the seats are arranged in a half-moon shape around a stage whose back wall is made of glass, which means you can be at a classical music concert in one of the most special halls in Chile and at the same time watch Lake Llanquihue and the imposing Osorno volcano. I want to see a concert there at sunset and then go out to watch the sky turn pink while looking at the volcano. Living in Frutillar and being able to contemplate spectacles like that on a daily basis must be incredible and that's why I think it's my favorite city in Chile so far, have any of you been to Frutillar, do you know of any similar places? Cuando regrese a ese ciudad, que espero sea pronto, hay un lugar que debo conocer por dentro: el Teatro del Lago. Una impresionante estructura de madera que es aún más hermosa por dentro porque los asientos se disponen en media luna alrededor de un escenario cuya pared del fondo es de cristal, lo que quiere decir que uno puede estar en un concierto de música clásica en una de las salas más especiales de Chile y a la vez observar el lago Llanquihue y el imponente volcán Osorno. Quiero ver un concierto allí al atardecer y luego salir para ver el cielo teñirse de rosa mirando el volcán. Vivir en Frutillar y poder contemplar espectáculos así a diario debe ser increíble y por eso creo que es mi ciudad favorita de Chile hasta ahora, ¿alguno de ustedes ha estado en Frutillar? ¿conocen algún lugar parecido?
