Hello community! I haven't posted anything here for a long time, so I decided to come back with a nice post about a trip to Chile that I made a few years ago with my partner and my parents.
We started from where Maxi and I live, El Bolson (Patagonia Argentina) going south to cross from Argentina to Chile passing through the Futaleufú international pass, which took us to the Chilean coast crossing the mountain range.
Hola comunidad! Hace mucho tiempo no publico nada por acá, así que decidí volver con un lindo posteo sobre un viaje a Chile que hice hace unos años con mi pareja y mis viejos.
Arrancamos desde donde Maxi y yo vivimos, El Bolson (Patagonia Argentina) yendo hacia el sur para cruzar de Argentina a Chile pasando por el paso internacional Futaleufú, lo que nos llevó hasta la costa chilena cruzando la cordillera.

The trip lasted a week, our idea was to cross by boat from Chaiten, a town with a sad history of abandonment due to the explosion of the volcano that bears the same name of the site, to the Isla Grande de Chiloé.
The first stage necessary to rest after a day of travel, was the small town of Santa Lucia, an unknown place in the middle of the mountains, with a mountainous environment that looks like the Brazilian hills made of few houses and a handful of stores and basic services. There we looked for a place to sleep and the only thing we got was a truck stop, just a house of a kind family that offered two or three rooms for travelers and workers passing through. We had a delicious dinner of chicken and vegetables, with homemade bread and apples for dessert, there was even wifi and I helped the lady to prepare the bread rolls for breakfast the next day.
Early in the morning we were already saying goodbye to Chaitén.
El viaje duró una semana, nuestra idea era cruzar en bote desde Chaiten, un pueblo con una triste historia de abandono por explosión del volcán que lleva el mismo nombre del sitio, a la Isla Grande de Chiloé.
La primera etapa necesaria para descansar después de un día de viaje, fue el pequeño pueblito de Villa Santa Lucía, un lugar desconocido en el medio de la cordillera, con un entorno de montañas que parecen los morros brasileños hecho de pocas casas y un puñado de tiendas y servicios básicos. Allí buscamos un lugar cualquiera para dormir y lo único que conseguimos fue un paradero para camioneros, simplemente una casa de una amable familia que ofrecía dos o tres habitaciones para los viajeros y los trabajadores que andan de paso. Remediamos una cena riquísima a base de pollo y verduras, con pan casero y manzanas de postre, había hasta wifi y ayudé a la doña a preparar los bollitos de pan para el desayuno del día siguiente.
Por la mañana temprano ya nos estábamos despidiendo rumbo a Chaiten.

This paragraph is a bit long but it is worthwhile to introduce a little of the history of this strange town and the adventure of spending a day there.
I did not know the history of Chaiten, until once there I learned that in May 2008 it had been completely evacuated by the eruption of the Chaiten volcano, which also produced the overflow of the nearby Blanco river that flooded all the houses (fortunately already abandoned five days ago).
In 2016, the year of this trip, just over 1500 people lived in the town and it was evidently a town under reconstruction and the curious thing is that it had a strange, dark energy, perhaps it was complicit the gray weather that day and the presence of many crows huddled on the lamp posts.
Este parráfo es un poco largo pero vale la pena introducir un poco la historia de este pueblo extraño y muy poco frecuentado por turistas y la aventura que fue pasar un día ahí.
Yo no conocía la historia de Chaiten, hasta que una vez allí me enteré de que en el mayo del 2008 había sido evacuado completamente por el erupción del volcán Chaiten, lo cual produjo también el desborde del cercano río Blanco que inundó la totalidad de las casas (por suerte ya abandonadas hace cinco días).
En el 2016, el año de este viaje, vivían en el pueblo poco más de 1500 personas y era evidentemente un pueblo en reconstrucción y lo curioso es que tenía una energía rara, oscura, quizá fue complice el clima gris de ese día y la presencia de muchos cuervos acurrucados en los postes de luz.

We rushed to find accommodation for the night, not that there was much choice ... there was a pension managed by a very unfriendly lady (this was a very funny anecdote of that trip) that closed the doors in a bad way, then in the same street a few meters ahead there was a hotel that we discovered to be abandoned so we kept walking around until we found I think the most similar structure to an open hotel that we had come across so far.
We checked in and went immediately to inquire about the frequency and prices of the boats that traveled to Chiloé and Quillón (south of Chiloé, the closest one) and because the days and the weather did not coincide, we could only choose the only one available for the next day, towards Puerto Montt...
Nos apuramos en buscar un alojamiento para pasar la noche, no que hubiese mucha elección...había una pensión gestionada por una señora muy poco amable (esta fue una anécdota muy divertida de ese viaje) que nos cerró las puertas de mala manera, luego en la misma calle unos metros más adelante había un hotel que descubrimos estar abandonado así que seguimos dando vueltas hasta que encontramos creo la estructura mas parecida a un hotel abierto que nos habíamos cruzado hasta ahora.
Nos registramos y fuimos enseguida a informarnos sobre la frecuencia y los precios de los botes que viajaban a Chiloé y a Quillón (zona sur de Chiloé, la mas cercana) y por no coincidir con los días ni con el clima, solamente pudimos elegir el unico disponible para el día siguiente, dirección Puerto Montt…

Ten endless hours of travel at sea, the first stretch with a very angry sea but when we entered between the islands it calmed down and the rest of the trip was relaxed, pleasant, we saw many giant jellyfish, seals and birds on the way.
Diez horas interminables de viaje en el mar, el primer tramo con un mar muy enojado pero cuando entramos entre las islas se calmó y el resto del viaje fue relajado, placentero, vimos muchas medusas gigantes, focas y aves en el camino.

We arrived in Puerto Montt at 7 in the evening, once I got a wifi I looked for a hotel to spend the next two nights and I found it on Andres Bello street, it looked decent and cheap so I booked it and when we arrived on that street I realized that there was no place to stay, a fact later confirmed by the receptionist of the hotel where in the end we did stay looking casually in the car not far from the area where we had just left. (The hotel we left and of which we still couldn't find the entrance, turned out to be a sex work hotel/bar, where users had even found evidence that in their absence someone had used their room...very funny haha).
I make it short, the next day we stayed in the area to visit the Calbuco volcano, in the outskirts of Puerto Montt, we got to the shore of Lake Chapo to admire the volcano from quite close; there we met a man who told us a little about how damaged the lake is due to the abuse of a hydroelectric plant that uses it as a reservoir, he also told us about the eruption of Calbuco in 2015 and the burned ancient larch forest that we had around us.
In the afternoon we were already returning to the city, after a quick lunch sitting outside a pantry in the middle of the road we went to visit the port area, a nice area recently improved with many small artisan stores and food stalls mainly based on fish.
Llegamos a Puerto Montt a las 7 de la tarde, una vez conseguido un wifi busqué un hotel para pasar las siguientes dos noches y lo encontré en la calle Andrés Bello, parecía decente y económico así que lo reservé y cuando llegamos en esa calle me di cuenta de que ahí no era lugar para quedarse, hecho luego confirmado por la receptora del hotel donde al final sí nos quedamos buscando casualmente en el auto no muy lejos de la zona de donde acabábamos de salir. (El hotel que abandonamos y de lo cual igualmente no encontramos la entrada, surgió ser un hotel/bar de trabajo sexual, donde usuarios hasta habían encontrados pruebas de que en su ausencia alguien usó su habitación…muy divertido todo jaja)
La hago corta, el día siguiente nos quedamos en la zona para ir a visitar el volcán Calbuco, en las afueras de Puerto Montt, llegamos hasta una orilla del lago Chapo para admirar el volcán desde bastante cerca; ahí conocimos un señor que nos contó un poco sobre lo dañado que está el lago producto del abuso de una central hidroeléctrica que lo utiliza como un embalse, nos contó también de la erupción del Calbuco del 2015 y del bosque de alerces milenarios quemados que teníamos alrededor nuestro.
Por la tarde ya estábamos volviendo a la ciudad, después de comer algo rápido sentados afuera de una despensa en el medio del camino nos fuimos a visitar la zona del puerto, una linda zona recientemente mejorada con muchas pequeñas tiendas de artesanos y puestos de comida principalmente a base de pescado.
