Our Maracaibo Lake, on whose shores I live, is the largest lake in South America, in the north of this subcontinent; it is related to the Caribbean Sea and, in fact, it is the only one that is related to the sea, in the whole world.
To the north, its waters are brackish because they kiss the Caribbean Sea; and to the south, they are very fresh waters, since they come from immense and plentiful rivers, such as the Catatumbo, the Chama, the Escalante, the Apón, the Palmar, the Santa Ana and the Motatán.
And that's not all, the lake holds one of the riches of black gold, read, oil, the largest in the world.
Its mangroves, beaches, perfect dunes in many places, almost white sands in the Guajira, a lightning that never ceases to illuminate the nights throughout the year and its legends, are an integral part of a culture that is years old.
A sick lake...?
Like many lakes in the world, our Lake Maracaibo is going through a serious contamination problem.
Oil production, with spills of hydrocarbon derivatives that are poured into the water, in addition to the connections it has with the populated areas, which are also a source of contamination, have made it a cause for concern.
The lake is, quite simply, beautiful; and in it, calm waters, deep, and on whose shores hundreds of villages coexist with an ancestral culture that the Europeans, in the 15th century, had already achieved.
Communities established and organized on the shores of the lake, and from its waters, the name of Venezuela was also born, due to the constructions of stilt houses that resembled this region to Venice, according to the Spanish conquerors of that time.
But there is, in addition, a progressive salinization, product of a dredging towards the sea, for the passage of industrial, big and heavy ships, that has given a progressive proliferation of algae that damages the oxygenation of the original ecosystem.
Searching for solutions
Although not much has been done by the Venezuelan government, many independent and university-related organizations in the country, concerned about this situation, are studying the pathologies and trying to find a solution as soon as possible.
Many science students, such as those studying pure or marine biology, are constantly doing research work to offer some kind of solution.
Of these, my nephews and nieces, who are college seniors, are trying to save the ecosystem in some way.
They have focused on the loss of fish and crustacean populations due to salinization and pH changes.
And, of course, they must monitor the mangroves, lake life and take samples for their research.
One day trips... Or two
In some of these sampling trips or surveillance tours, which we always try to accompany some of us, their relatives, as they are, all day, in boats adapted for this, we were able to take pictures of the mangroves and make measurements of the crustaceans in the area.
Hence these images, which are not only a way to publicize this problem and our lake, which gives us wonderful images from any point, such as from the city of Maracaibo or from the indigenous peoples of the Guajira, north of this, but also as a way to raise awareness to the world of the importance of being responsible with the environment.
How important it is to save the largest lake in South America, which is the source and seat of the only natural phenomenon that produces ozone in the world, the famous Catatumbo Lightning, which is a Guinness record for being a lightning that is repeated hundreds of times a day.
Also known as the lanterns of San Antonio or the lanterns of Maracaibo, this lightning is a natural life giver for man, it helps purify the surrounding air, generates ozone layer and its thunderstorms provide rainfall necessary for crops.

Nuestro lago de Maracaibo, a cuyas orillas vivo, es el más grande de Sudamérica, al norte de este sub continente; está relacionado con el mar Caribe y, de hecho, es el único que se relaciona con el mar, en todo el mundo.
Al norte, sus aguas son salobres pues besan al Mar Caribe; y al sur, son aguas muy dulces, ya que provienen de ríos inmensos y caudalosos, como el río Catatumbo, el Chama, el Escalante, el Apón, el Palmar, el Santa Ana y el Motatán.
Y no es todo, el lago guarda una de las riquezas de oro negro, léase, petróleo, más grande del mundo.
Sus manglares, playas, dunas perfectas en muchos lugares, arenas casi blancas en la Guajira, un relámpago que no deja de alumbrar la noche todo el año y sus leyendas, son parte integral de una cultura que tiene años.
¿Un lago enfermo…?
Al igual que muchos lagos en el mundo, nuestro lago de Maracaibo está atravesando por un grave problema de contaminación bastante importante.
La producción petrolífera, con derrames de derivados de hidrocarburos que se vierten al agua, amén de las conexiones que tiene con las áreas pobladas que, también son fuente de contaminación, han hecho que sea motivo de preocupación.
Es que el lago es, simplemente, hermoso; y en él, aguas tranquilas, profundas por demás, y en cuyas orillas cientos de poblados conviven con una cultura ancestral que ya los europeos, en el siglo XV, consiguieron.
Comunidades establecidas y organizadas a orillas del lago, y de sus aguas, nace además, el nombre de Venezuela, debido a las construcciones de palafitos que asemejaron esta región a Venecia, según los conquistadores españoles de aquel entonces.
Pero hay, sumada, una salinización progresiva, producto de un dragado hacia el mar, para el paso de barcos industriales, grandes y pesados, que ha dado una progresiva proliferación de algas que dañan la oxigenación del ecosistema original.
Buscando soluciones
A pesar de que no es mucho lo que el gobierno venezolano ha hecho, muchas organizaciones independientes y relacionadas con las universidades del país, preocupadas por esta situación, están estudiando las patologías y tratando de buscar una solución lo más inmediata posible.
Muchos estudiantes de ciencias, como los que estudian biología pura o marina, están realizando trabajos de investigación constantemente, para ofrecer algún tipo de solución.
De ellos, mis sobrinos, estudiantes de los últimos años universitarios, están tratando de salvar el ecosistema de alguna manera.
Ellos se han centrado en la pérdida de la población de peces y crustáceos producto de la salinización y de los cambios de Ph.
Y, por supuesto, deben monitorear la vida lacustre, tomar muestras para realizar sus trabajos de investigación.
Viajes de un día… O dos
En unos de estos viajes de muestreo o recorrido de vigilancia, a los que siempre tratamos de acompañarlos algunos de nosotros, sus familiares, pues son, todo un día en embarcaciones adaptadas para esto, pudimos tomar fotografías de los manglares y hacer mediciones de los crustáceos de la zona.
De allí estas imágenes, que no solo son una forma de dar a conocer esta problemática y a nuestro lago, que nos brinda imágenes maravillosas desde cualquier punto, como, desde la ciudad de Maracaibo o desde los pueblos indígenas de la Guajira, al norte de este, sino también, como una manera de concientizar al mundo de la importancia que tiene ser responsables con el ambiente.
Lo importante que es salvar al lago más grande de Sudamérica, que es fuente y asiento del único fenómeno natural que produce ozono en el mundo, el famoso Relámpago del Catatumbo, que es récord Guinness por ser un rayo que se repite cientos de veces al día.
También conocido como las linternas de San Antonio o los faroles de Maracaibo, este rayo es un dador de vida natural para el hombre, ayuda a purificar el aire circundante, genera capa de ozono y sus tormentas eléctricas dan precipitaciones necesarias para los cultivos.
