Habiendo regresado de la Patagonia Argentina el Miércoles 16, nos quedaban exactamente tres días para recorrer rápidamente, aquellos lugares representativos de la capital bonaerense ¿Que escoger? Buenos Aires es tan gigantesca y tiene tantos lugares para ver que, la verdad, parecía una tarea muy titánica. Y el Jueves 17 era el primer día para abordar el desafío, solo que sería sin acompañantes, porque nuestro hijo y su pareja tenían que trabajar. Nuestra experiencia viajera ayudó a desplazarnos en subterráneo hacia el destino escogido por nosotros para ese día: los bosques de Palermo. Al menos ese era el plan, pero falló porque se nos hizo tarde.
Having returned from Patagonia Argentina on Wednesday the 16th, we had exactly three days left to quickly tour those representative places of the capital of Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires is so gigantic and has so many places to see that, to tell the truth, it seemed a titanic task. And Thursday 17th was the first day to tackle the challenge, only it would be without companions because our son and his partner had to work. Our traveling experience helped us to move by subway to the destination chosen by us for that day: the woods of Palermo. At least that was the plan, but it failed because we were running late.
Les explico; cansados como estábamos, nos encontramos durmiendo hasta bien entrada la mañana, porque la noche anterior habíamos ido a cenar y nos extendimos porque entramos a un bar llamado Boticario, demás está decir que el cuerpo ya no aguanta los trasnochos como antes. Desayunamos tarde y finalmente salimos a la calle cerca del mediodía. Los chicos nos prestaron su tarjeta para desplazarnos por el transporte público de la ciudad. Tomamos tres rutas para llegar a la zona de la plaza Italia. Desde allí se camina a un complejo de parques inmensos, que están conectados unos con otros.
Let me explain; tired as we were, we found ourselves sleeping well into the morning because the night before we had gone to dinner and we extended ourselves because we went to a bar called Boticario, needless to say, that the body can no longer stand the late nights as before. We had a late breakfast and finally hit the streets around noon. The guys lent us their cards to use the city's public transportation. We took three routes to get to the Piazza Italia area. From there you walk to a complex of huge parks, which are connected.
La gran mayoría son gratis y en los que no lo son, el precio de la entrada es sugerida para el cuido de los parques, el jardín botánico es pago obligatorio. Lo importante de todo esto es que la carga impositiva está justificada para los habitantes de la urbe, porque todos los espacios se encuentran muy cuidados. Aplaudimos a los bonaerenses, nos han dejado la sensación de que se puede si se quiere. La lista de parques conectados es interminable y el tiempo disponible nos dio el chance -con la poca energía- de visitar dos de ellos: el Ecoparque y el Rosedal de Palermo.
The great majority are free and in those that are not, the price of the entrance is suggested for the care of the parks, the botanical garden is obligatory payment. The important thing about all this is that the tax burden is justified for the inhabitants of the city because all the spaces are very well cared for. We applaud the people of Buenos Aires, they have left us with the feeling that you can do it if you want to. The list of connected parks is endless and the time available gave us the chance -with little energy- to visit two of them: the Ecoparque and the Rosedal of Palermo.
El ecoparque es una espacio gigantesco rodeado de pura naturaleza, es lo más cercano a una pequeña selva enclavada en la ciudad y relleno de senderos para caminar. Consigues todo tipo de fauna local suelta y otras especies no nativas enclaustradas en recintos espaciosos. Andar por los senderos es descubrir muchísimos monumentos que se revelan conforme avanzas. También tiene dos lagos grandes y la tranquilidad es bastante resaltante a pesar de tener avenidas que le rodean. Ves cosas extrañas ¿Un ejemplo? Una imitación de una cabaña congoleña de hace dos siglos, cuando los belgas explotaban ese territorio. Nos preguntamos que hacía algo así en medio de un parque en Buenos Aires ¿Algún político que no sabía en que invertir los impuestos del ciudadano? Misterio.
The eco-park is a gigantic space surrounded by pure nature, the closest thing to a small jungle nestled in the city and filled with walking trails. You get all kinds of local wildlife on the loose and other non-native species cloistered in spacious enclosures. To walk the trails is to discover many, many monuments that reveal themselves as you go along. It also has two large lakes and the tranquility is quite remarkable despite having avenues surrounding it. You see strange things. Example? An imitation of a Congolese hut from two centuries ago, when the Belgians exploited that territory. We wonder what was something like that doing in the middle of a park in Buenos Aires. Some politician who didn't know how to invest the citizen's taxes? Mystery.
Afortunadamente, las bancas repartidas a lo largo de los senderos y la frondosa vegetación, ayudan al descanso necesario del andar. Finalizado el recorrido, salimos por la entrada oriental del parque, hacia el monumento de la carta magna, caminar atravesando las avenidas que convergen en la rotonda, es seguro. Si algo tienen los nativos de la capital es que respetan a los peatones y los pasos de cebra son seguros. Hicimos un rodeo para alcanzar la entrada al Rosedal de Palermo. Otro de los enormes parques del complejo. Las caminerías son de ripio y arcilla, están rodeadas de grama bien cuidada y arboledas distribuidas por todo el parque.
Fortunately, the benches scattered along the trails and the lush vegetation, help the necessary rest of the walk. After the tour, we left through the eastern entrance of the park, towards the monument of the Magna Carta, walking across the avenues that converge at the traffic circle, is safe. If there is one thing the natives of the capital have, it is that they respect pedestrians and the crosswalks are safe. We made a detour to reach the entrance to the Palermo Rose Garden. Another of the huge parks in the complex. The paths are made of gravel and clay, surrounded by well-kept grass and groves of trees distributed throughout the park.
Para el momento en que la noche se acercaba, el regreso a casa se hizo evidente y el tiempo no nos alcanzó para ver el resto de los parques del complejo. Lamentable. Creemos que se lleva todo un día para conocer el conjunto completo y nosotros habíamos aterrizado allí cerca de las dos y media de la tarde. Algo que nos quedó claro con la visita: puede que existan ciudades con jardines y parques muy cuidados, pero lo pensamos como algo habitual del primer mundo. Llegar a un país del tercer mundo y apreciar el ornamento natural que ofrece Buenos Aires, es un hálito de esperanza para el resto de las urbes latinoamericanas, visto el ejemplo que ofrecen los Argentinos. A ellos, mi gratitud por su propia ciudad.
By the time evening approached, the return home became apparent and time was not enough for us to see the rest of the parks in the resort. Unfortunate. We think it takes a whole day to see the whole complex and we had landed there around 2:30 in the afternoon. One thing that became clear to us during the visit: there may be cities with manicured gardens and parks, but we think of it as something common in the first world. Arriving in a third-world country and appreciating the natural ornament that Buenos Aires offers, is a breath of hope for the rest of the Latin American cities, given the example offered by the Argentines. To them, my gratitude for their own city.
