Esa mañana nos despertó la noticia de que unas tortugas habían eclosionado, es decir, salido de sus huevitos. La comunidad ya está súper organizada y hay quienes se encargan de ayudar a terminar de salir a las pequeñas y colocarlas en un lugar seguro para liberarlas cuando comience a caer la tarde.

That morning we woke up to the news that some turtles had hatched, that is, came out of their eggs. The community is already very organised and there are those who are in charge of helping the little ones to hatch and place them in a safe place to release them when the evening starts to fall.

Ese día había muchos turistas que también fueron parte de la bonita ceremonia de liberación de tortugas. La primera la liberó una nena chiquitica.

That day there were many tourists who were also part of the beautiful turtle release ceremony. The first one was released by a little baby turtle.

Para las tortugas el mar es su madre, jamás conocen a la que las incuba. Se enfrentan desde siempre solitas al mundo, por eso su expectativa de vida es tan minúscula, en especial, durante sus primeros 20 años. No tienen a nadie que las proteja de los diversos peligros naturales y humanos que las acechan. Tiene una memoria increíble y vuelven a desovar en la misma playa que las desovaron a ellas, luego de 30 años que alcanzan la vida adulta.

For the turtles the sea is their mother, they never know the one who hatches them. They have always faced the world alone, which is why their life expectancy is so minuscule, especially during their first 20 years. They have no one to protect them from the various natural and human dangers that lie in wait. They have an incredible memory and return to spawn on the same beach that spawned them after 30 years of adult life.

A las costas de La Sabana, llegan tres especies de tortugas marinas, entre ellas, las más grandes de todas: la tortuga cardón. Además desovan en estas playas la carey y la caretta caretta, también conocida como caguamo. En esa oportunidad liberamos tortugas cardón.

Three species of sea turtles come to the coasts of La Sabana, including the largest of them all: the cardon turtle. The hawksbill and the caretta caretta, also known as loggerhead turtles, also lay their eggs on these beaches. On that occasion we released cardon turtles.

Fue un viaje mágico y todas las experiencias vividas quedan guardaditas en la mente y el corazón para contar en alguna reunión con amigos y familia: ir a la playa por tres días con 3$ en el bolsillo, liberar tortugas, dormir en una carpa bajo una tormenta inclemente.

It was a magical trip and all the experiences I had are kept in my mind and heart to tell at a meeting with friends and family: going to the beach for three days with 3$ in my pocket, releasing turtles, sleeping in a tent under an inclement storm.

Regrese con la ilusión de volver dentro de 30 años y reencontrarme con alguna tortuga adulta liberada ese 24 de julio de 2021.

I came back with the illusion of coming back in 30 years and meet again some adult turtle released on July 24, 2021.
