Hello, HIVERS! It’s a go out for me to present you the town of Daugavpils - where you can find centuries of history and something more! Let me take you with me on this adventure!
🧳
Here am I in one of the most historic cities in Latvia - Daugavpils. The best way to get from Riga {the capital of Latvia} to Daugavpils is by bus. Actually, this was the most common and convenient way of transport here. The bus dropped us off at the bus station and from there our tour of this magnificent city began.
Suddenly we came to one of the most famous streets in Daugavpils, called Rīgas.
Rīgas street, center of Daugavpils
According to locals, this was the first pedestrian street in Latvia to be designated as such in the late 1970s. Considering this fact, one would think that this country is economically backward compared to most European representatives. Believe me, just one day in this picturesque town will prove you otherwise.
Walking along this street, we see the first landmark of the day.
St. Peter’s church ⛪️
A beautiful church, which only at first glance we can define as Catholic. Unfortunately it turned out to be closed due to the fact that it was under renovation. By the information sign posted at the entrance of the church, we found out that this is St. Peters church, a Roman Catholic Church dating back to 1848.
Daugavpils streets
After enjoying a cappuccino on this cold November day, we continued with our tour. Suddenly a small plaque appeared in front of us, with the following name Andrejs Švirksts.
Andrejs Švirksts monument
As every tourist, our interest was focused on finding out who this man was and what he had to do with the history of Daugavpils. It tournes out that Švirksts was the Head of the town between 1938-1940.
Nearby is also and Vienības nams 🏣 and the White Orthodox Church.
Vienības nams {Daugavpils Initu house}
Un The guidebook, I bought from Bulgarian, The informatīvos avotu trīs modern building SAS quite scarce. The only thing we found out was that it housed the city’s library.
Right in front of Vienības nams, there is a tram station.
As I say the distance between Vienības nams and The White
Orthodox Church is somewhere between 100-150 meters.
White Orthodox Church
As you can see, it looks just like a Russian church, and if you have a chance to see it inside, you will be fascinated by the
way it is painted. Unfortunately, it wasn’t allowed to take pictures from inside. 📵
If you just go forward from Vienības nams, two block away is located Dubrovin park.
Dubrovin park
A very nice and modernistic place. Especially if it wasn’t the middle of November, and the temperature only 0 degrees. Here you can also see two emblematic for Daugavpils monuments.
Pavel Dubrovin monument
As you can guess, the first monument is of the founder of the park - Pavel Dubovin. And the second one…
Soviet Army soldiers monument
… well the second one is a monument of the Soviet Army soldiers.
“Eternal memory for those who fell in battle”
As the day was coming to an end and it was dusk before 18:00 local time, we decided that it would be better to leave some of the landmarks for the next day and despite that enjoy a tasty dinner in a traditional Latvian restaurant.
Stay tuned for the next part of this travel experience!
Cheers! 🍻
