In a previous post, I promised I would visit this place. Today I kept that promise and I'm bringing you everything I was able to see and experience there.
So, the History
Thanks to its favorable geographic features, Havana Bay served as a safe haven for Spanish ships and for months housed treasures and goods arriving from other American ports. This role as a gathering point for the fleet made Havana the most important port in the Caribbean and fueled the city’s growth at a faster pace than all others in the region.
In November 1558, the engineer in charge of building the fortress arrived to Havana. By April 27, 1577, a notary certified the castle's completion. In 1589, Governor Texeda (1589-1594) became the first to live in the castle.
During the term of Governor Valdés (1603-1605), repairs were ordered to secure the Castillo de la Real Fuerza as a storage site for American wealth en route to Spain. Sometime between 1630 and 1634, the tower was crowned by La Giraldilla, a weathervane statue tied to a beautiful legend—which we’ll discuss shortly.
Over time, the castle underwent further modifications. In 1718 and between 1830-1834, it was expanded with additional rooms and functional spaces. In 1868, they almost demolished it 😱, but luckily, that didn’t happen, and it remained in use even after Spain lost the war and had to leave Cuba (1898).
During the 20th century, it went through several restorations and housed different museums until, in 2008, it reopened as the Museo Castillo de la Real Fuerza. So, this is an incredibly old place with an enormous history.
The Castle Itself
In that previous post, I shared photos of the exterior. Here, you can see more pictures of the structure itself: the bell tower where La Giraldilla stands, the moat (which has water!), and the entrance.
Right upon entering, you’re greeted by something that, if you’re Cuban, will give you chills—the original Giraldilla! This small bronze statue (I imagined it bigger) is one of Havana’s most iconic symbols and the oldest. According to the museum guides, it was cast by Havana sculptor Jerónimo Martínez Pinzón under the orders of Governor Juan Bitrián de Viamontes between 1630 and 1634.
A powerful hurricane that struck Havana on October 20, 1926, tore it from its pedestal, though it was later restored. In the 1960s, to protect it from weathering, it was moved to different locations until 2008, when it returned to La Fuerza—but not to its original spot. The one you see today atop the tower is a replica! I did not see that coming.
Still, being so close to this statue is absolutely worth it. Getting to see its details up close is incredible, especially when you know the legend behind it.
The Legend
I have to tell this part of the story, even if it means splitting the post in two (bear with me, dear reader 🥺). It’s for your own good.
Isabel de Bobadilla was married to Hernando de Soto, a daring Spanish conquistador who, for his merits, was named Captain General of Cuba and Adelantado of Florida. The title of Adelantado basically meant, "Go ahead, venture into that unknown land, and let’s see what happens." In Hernando de Soto’s case, as we’ll see, things did not go well.
The couple arrived in Cuba in 1538, finding a small, terrified settlement constantly under threat from pirates and corsairs. So, De Soto decided to build a fortress. And right where the castle we’re discussing now stands, construction of a defensive structure began in 1539.
The problem? Hernando de Soto had heard tales of the famed Fountain of Youth in Florida and became obsessed with finding it. Since he left on what seemed like a quick trip—like someone popping out to the store—no one thought to appoint a replacement, and his wife, Isabel de Bobadilla, ended up governing the country.
The second problem? He never came back.
By 1540, with the initial fortress completed, Isabel would climb the tower daily, gazing at the sea, waiting for her husband 🥺. Two years later, she learned of his death.

Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring, Havana’s historian, wrote in the magazine Carteles:
"Isabel’s nobility, her fortune, the protection her father had given Soto since childhood, her family’s wealth, her influential connections, as well as her beauty, intelligence, and discretion, have made her a figure who stands out in her own right alongside her husband. It’s impossible to speak of him, his governance in Cuba, or his expedition to Florida without also mentioning, in a very special way, Doña Isabel de Bobadilla."
And so, because of this beautiful and heartbreaking legend, such a masterpiece was created to rest forever atop that tower 😭

En un post anterior, prometí que visitaría este lugar. Hoy cumplí esa promesa y les traigo todo lo que pude ver y vivir allí.
La Historia
Debido a las favorables características goográficas, la bahía de La Habana constituía seguro refugio para las naves españolas y albergaba durante meses los tesoros y mercancías provenientes de otros puertos americanos. Esta condición de lugar de encuentro de la Flota, convirtió a La Habana en el puerto más importante del Caribe e hizo crecer la ciudad a un ritmo mayor que todas las de su entorno.
En noviembre de 1558, llegaba a La Habana el ingeniero encargado de comenzar la construcción del castillo. El 27 de abril de 1577, un notario atestiguaba su terminación. En 1589, el gobemador Texeda (1589-1594) fue el primero en habitar el castillo.
En tiempos del gobernador Valdés (1603-1605), se ordenó reparar el Castillo de La Real Fuerza para garantizar su seguridad como almacén de las riquezas americanas en tránsito a España. En algún momento entre 1630 y 1634 se construyó la torre rematada por la Giraldilla, una estatua veleta testimonio de una hermosa leyenda, de la que hablaremos en breve.
Con el paso del tiempo, el Castillo siguió teniendo modificaciones. En 1718, entre 1830-1834, sobre todo aumentado su tamaño con salas y espacios utilitarios. En 1868 casi lo demuelen 😱, pero por suerte no se hizo, y básicamente siguió funcionando incluso cuando España perdió la guerra y tuvo que salir de Cuba (1898).
Durante el siglo XX pasó por varias restauraciones, fue sede varios museos, hasta que en 2008 abre sus puertas como Museo Castillo de la Real Fuerza. O sea un lugar viejísimo con una Historia enorme.
El castillo en sí
En un post anterior hice fotos del exterior y prometí que visitaría este museo. Aquí pueden ver otras fotos de la construcción como tal: la torre campanario donde está la Giraldilla, el foso (que tiene agua!), la entrada.
Justo al entrar te encuentras algo que, si eres cubano, hace que se te erice la piel. Nada menos que la Giraldilla original! Esta pequeña estatua de bronce (la imaginaba más grande) es uno de los símbolos más representativos de la ciudad de La Habana, y el más antiguo. Según información de las guías del museo, la fundió el escultor habanero Jerónimo Martínez Pinzón por orden del gobernador Juan Bitrián de Viamontes, entre 1630 у 1634.
El fuerte huracán que azotó La Habana el 20 de octubre de 1926 la arrancó de su pedestal, al que sería repuesta luego. En la década del 60, para preservarla de las inclemencias ambientales, se trasladó a otros sitios hasta que en 2008, cuando regresó a La Fuerza. Pero no a su emplazamiento original, pues ¡la que se observa hoy en la torre del castillo es una réplica! Esa no la vi venir.
De cualquier manera estar tan cerca de esta estatua vale completamente todo. Poder ver bien sus rasgos y detalles. Y más cuando uno conoce la leyenda.
La leyenda
Esta parte del viaje la tengo que contar sí o sí, aunque luego haya que dividir el post en dos pedazos (paciencia, lector 🥺) lo hago por su bien.
Isabel de Bobadilla estaba casada con Hernando de Soto, un intrépido conquistador español que por sus méritos fue nombrado Capitán General de la Isla de Cuba y Adelantado de la Florida. "Adelantado", como título, era como decir "anda, métete allí en esa tierra que no conocemos y vamos a ver qué pasa". En el caso de Hernando de Soto, como vamos a ver, no pasó nada bueno.
La pareja llegó a Cuba en 1538, y se encontraron una villa de población todavía muy reducida y atemorizada por los constantes saqueos de corsarios y piratas. Por consiguiente, nuestro De Soto decidió hacer una fortificación. Y ahí donde luego estuvo el castillo q nos ocupa en este post, comenzó en 1539 la construcción de algún tipo de edificación defensiva.
El problema es que Hernando de Soto había oído decir que en la Florida estaba la tan nombrada Fuente de la Juventud y se obsesionó con ir para allá a encontrarla. Como salió "de paseo", como quien va a dar una vuelta al barrio y regresa, a nadie se le ocurrió ponerle un sustituto y su mujer, Isabel de Bobadilla, quedó al mando del país.
El segundo problema es que el hombre no volvió. En 1540, terminado el castillo inicial, Isabel subía a diario a la torre a mirar al mar, esperando a su marido 🥺. Dos años después, se enteró de su muerte.
Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring, historiador de La Habana, escribió en la revista Carteles: “La nobleza de Isabel, su fortuna, la protección que desde muy niño prestó su padre a Soto, la riqueza de su familia y las amplias y valiosas relaciones que poseía con personajes de la época, así como la belleza, inteligencia y discreción que adornaban su persona, han hecho de esta mujer una figura que se destaca con caracteres propios y relevantes junto a su marido, siendo imposible hablar de éste ni de su gobierno en Cuba ni de su expedición a La Florida, sin mencionar, también, de manera muy singular, a doña Isabel de Bobadilla”.
Y pues, por esta preciosa y tristísima leyenda, se construyó semejante obra de arte para que reposara por siempre en esa torre 😭
