Santo Domingo Square, a street with history and fascinating architecture [eng/spa]

One of the places I would not fail to visit if I were on vacation in Havana would be Santo Domingo Square. This place has its address on the popular Mercaderes Street, between Obispo and O'Reilly, so there is no excuse not to visit it, because its location is perfect.
Personally, I find it very familiar to be there, because when I arrive, I am always greeted by its cozy cobblestone streets; and they remind me of the place where I was born. I never tire of saying that I am from Camagüey, one of the most beautiful provinces in Cuba, and that it preserves its historic center in perfect condition, so it still looks like a city from colonial times or out of some old book. In addition, fortunately, whenever I walk through the square, the sky draws its best colors, so that everything comes together in perfect harmony.

Uno de los lugares que no dejaría de recorrer, si llegara de vacaciones a La Habana, sería la Plazuela de Santo Domingo. Este lugar tiene su dirección en la popular calle Mercaderes, entre Obispo y O'Reilly, así que no hay excusas para no conocerla, pues su ubicación es perfecta.
Personalmente, a mí me resulta muy familiar estar allí, debido a que al llegar, siempre me reciben sus acogedoras calles empedradas; y me recuerdan el lugar donde nací. No me cansó de decir que soy de Camagüey, una de las provincias más hermosas de Cuba, y que conserva su centro histórico en perfectas condiciones, por lo que parece aún una ciudad de la época colonial o sacada de algún libro antiguo. Además, por fortuna, siempre que recorro la plazuela, el cielo dibuja sus mejores colores, para que todo confluya en perfecta armonía.

One of the things I like most about the Santo Domingo Square is its relaxed atmosphere. There you can sit on one of its benches and simply enjoy the life going on around you, or the sound produced by the water coming out of its fountain that, as an architectural element, stands out in the middle of the place.
Although this was not the case on this visit, I have been there on other occasions and have also enjoyed the small musical groups that entertain with live Cuban music, or the living statues that flood this part of the city.

Una de las cosas que más me gusta de la Plazuela de Santo Domingo es su ambiente relajado. Ahí puedes sentarte en uno de sus bancos y simplemente disfrutar de la vida que transcurre a tu alrededor, o del sonido que produce el agua que sale de su fuente que, como elemento arquitectónico, destaca en el medio del lugar.
Aunque no fue así en esta visita, he estado en otras ocasiones y he disfrutado también de pequeñas agrupaciones musicales que amenizan con música cubana en vivo, o de las estatuas vivientes que inundan esta parte de la ciudad.

For those who love historical facts, I tell you that one of the buildings located in the square is the University of San Geronimo, which was formerly the Convent of Santo Domingo, which is closely related to the name of this space.
The plazuela is accompanied by sculptures of 4 characters that marked milestones in the moments they lived. All are located in a straight line and have the same dimensions and architectural styles. The first one is dedicated to Dante Alighieri, who was a renowned Italian poet and writer.

Para los amantes de los datos históricos, les cuento que una de las edificaciones que se encuentra en la plazuela es la Universidad de San Gerónimo, que antiguamente fue el Convento de Santo Domingo, lo que está estrechamente relacionado con el nombre de este espacio.
La plazuela está acompañada por las esculturas de 4 personajes que marcaron hitos en los momentos que les tocó vivir. Todas están ubicadas en línea recta y tienen las mismas dimensiones y estilos arquitectónicos. La primera es dedicada a Dante Alighieri, quien fuera un reconocido poeta y escritor italiano.

The second one is of Miguel Cervantes y Saavedra, who has made hundreds of generations enjoy and learn with his incredible work Don Quixote de la Mancha.
A third sculpture evokes the figure of William Shakespeare, who taught us the eternal love of Romeo and Juliet. The last one is of the Portuguese poet Luis Vaz de Camoes.

La segunda es de Miguel Cervantes y Saavedra, quien ha hecho disfrutar y aprender a cientos de generaciones con su increíble obra Don Quijote de la Mancha.
Una tercera escultura evoca la figura de William Shakespeare, quien nos enseñó el amor eterno de Romeo y Julieta. La última, es del poeta portugués Luis Vaz de Camoes.

For my next visit, I would like to taste the offerings of the restaurant La Dominica, which is located just in front, and has the peculiarity that the tables that are arranged outdoors, offer a beautiful view of the square. I mention this so that if you visit the place close to lunchtime, you will have options to choose from.
In addition, very close to it there are also art galleries where local artists exhibit their works, and stores where they promote the sale of souvenirs that can be memorable souvenirs to take home.

Para mi próxima visita, me gustaría degustar de las ofertas que ofrece el restaurante La dominica, que se encuentra ubicado justo en frente, y que tiene la peculiaridad de que las mesas que están dispuestas al aire libre, ofrecen una vista preciosa de la plazuela. Esto lo comento por si visitas el lugar cerca del horario de almuerzo, tengas opciones para escoger.
