Whenever my head is too full of things and worries, I would go for a quiet walk at my favorite temple called Wat Bowornnivet or Wat Boworn. The first time I discovered this temple was when I wanted to visit my old grandmother’s house in Banglumpoo shortly after my return from abroad. Being in a foreign land for several years made me homesick and started wondering about my family history and my cultural inheritance.

Banglumpoo is the name of the district which is in closest vicinity of the Grand Palace and several other palaces of royal families’s members. It used to be a very posh district full of modern shops, restaurants, hairdressers and jewelry shops in its heydays. Wat Boworn has always been very special and closely related to the Royal family since the reign of King Rama 3. Before acceding the throne, King Mongkut was ordained as a monkhood here for 27 years. During these years he managed to read and write English fluently and became remarkably accomplished in astronomy with accurate calculation of the total solar eclipse witnessed by many foreign consulates and dignitaries.

There is so much interesting and intriguing stories both historical and mysterious associated with Wat Boworn. That’s why I have always been attracted to this temple. I wondered why my mother never brought us to this wonderful temple; but she did bring us to the Temple of the Emerald Buddha inside the Grand Palace quite often. I still know very little about this temple as I could not find a comprehensive book on the history of the temple; bits of information were scattered around in memoirs and books which were out of print.
But the energy and atmosphere of Wat Boworn struck me the first time I walked around the garden. I could only imagine how fantastic this place must have been a hundred years ago when people were seriously practicing Buddhism and there were chanting and praying in the Ordination Hall every evening . The energy then must have been quite electric.
The ground would be covered by tall trees everywhere while there was a small canal connecting to the Chao Phraya River. So people could row their boats to the temple instead of walking along the earthen road which was muddy during rainy season. People would be dressed in modest white clothes while carrying lotus flowers and jasmine garlands including baskets of food and sweets for their dana ceremonies. There was no rush or hurry under the pressure of time; people just walk slowly to the main hall to do their prayers and meditation.
To these days, I am still surprised why most people suddenly fell into silence as soon as they entered the Ordination Hall. There is no need to have a ‘silence’ sign there. I think they could feel some kind of vibes or energy which touched their deep subconscious so they just let themselves to be enveloped by this calming feeling.
I like to approach the temple from the parking area so I could slowly walk past the garden with monks’ kuti or monks’ cottages. These old buildings were built during The reign of King RamaV. The architectural design was done by the Italian architect who was commissioned to design several palaces and government buildings at that time. I was to see the imported Italian wrought irons were still in good condition and the neo -colonial style windows made from solids teak wood have not been replaced by aluminum slide windows. I just wished that some old trees there would tell me some old stories of this temple and the lives of those passive people of the long lost past.
เวลาเราต้องการความสงบและปล่อยความคิดที่มีอยู่เต็มสมองออกไปบ้าง เราจะไปเดินเที่ยวที่วัดบวรนิเวศน์แถวบางลำพู เราเองมารู้จักวัดนี้ตอนที่เรากลับมาจากต่างประเทศ และพยายามไปเดินหาบ้านเก่าของคุณยายที่บางลำพู เวลาไปอยู่ต่างบ้านต่างประเทศนานๆ ทำให้เราคิดถึงบ้านและอยากรู้จักรากเหง้าของตระกูล ตลอดจนวัฒนธรรมเก่าแก่ของเมืองเกิดด้วย เราแทบไม่มีความรู้ด้านประวัติศาสตร์เลย การศึกษาของไทยนั้นล้มเหลวโดยสิ้นเชิง มันทำให้เราไม่รู้จัก็ตนเองและสิ่งที่บรรพบุรุษต้องเสียละ เพื่อให้คนรุ่นหลังมีชีวิตที่อุดมสมบูรณ์และมีอิสรภาพ เราอยากรู้เรื่องราวของวัดนี้มาก แต่ไม่มีหนังสือที่รวบรวมประวัติความเป็นมาไว้ในที่เดียว ความทรงจำไม่ได้ถูกบันทึกเป็นตัวหนังสือ เรื่องเล่าก็ค่อยๆเลือนหายไปกับกาลเวลา
เราชอบเดินเข้ามาทางลานจอดรถ เพราะเราจะได้เดินผ่านสวนและส่วนที่เป็นกุฏิพระ เราชอบดูตึกเก่าที่สร้างมาในสมัยในหลวงรัชกาลที่5 ที่มีการออกแบบโดยนายช่างอิตาเลียนที่ถูกจ้างให้ออกแบบพระราชวัง และตึกที่ใช้เป็นที่ราชการหลายแห่ง เราดูความงามและความลงตัวของสถาปัตยกรรมที่เรียบง่าย สมัยก่อนตอนที่มีต้นไม้ใหญ่เต็มไปหมด วัดนี้คงเหมือนวัดในป่า และชาวบ้านที่มาวัดก็ยังพานเรือมาได้ เพราะมีคลองอยู่หน้าวัด ชาวบ้านไม่ต้องเดินลุยถนนที่เป็นโคลนในหน้าฝน ชีวิตคงเรียบง่ายและไม่รีบเร่งเหมือนปัจจุบัน ชาวบ้านจะมาถวายอาหารพระและมาสวดมนต์ในตอนเย็นและฟังเทศน์ทุกวันพระ พลังดีๆจึงสะสมอยู่ในโบสถ์และบริเวณวัด เราอยากให้ต้นไม้ที่มีอายุมากและอยู่มานานเกือบร้อยปี เล่าเรื่องราวสมัยก่อนให้เราฟังบ้าง จะเล่าให้เราฟังในฝันก็ดีเหมือนกัน เราจะได้รู้ว่าคนสมัยก่อนมีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่กันอย่างไร
