Growing up in Daanbantayan, Cebu, I've always known about the natural beauty of Kinatarkan Island, located just a short boat ride away. However, despite living so close for all these years, I've never had the chance to visit and experience its stunning beaches and turquoise waters firsthand.
Finally, I decided to change that and embarked on a journey to explore Kinatarkan Island. What I discovered there left me in awe.
KINATARKAN ISLAND
Kinatarkan Island, also known as Guintarcan Island to some locals, is a serene and unspoiled gem situated between the main island of Cebu and the Bantayan group of islands in the Visayas region of the Philippines. Despite being technically part of the municipality of Santa Fe on Bantayan Island, it is more easily accessible from the Daanbantayan port, located on the northern tip of Cebu.
GOING THERE
There are two ways to reach Kinatarkan Island. The first option is to take a boat from Santa Fe, located on Bantayan Island, while the second option is to take a boat from Daanbantayan, on the main island of Cebu. The latter option is generally considered the easiest and most affordable.
To get to Daanbantayan from Cebu City's North Bus Terminal, you can take a bus that says "Maya via Bagay" or "Daanbantayan via Kawit." The fare for an air-conditioned bus is around ₱192 ($3.50) per way, and the travel time is roughly 4-5 hours, depending on traffic conditions in the city.
Upon arriving in Daanbantayan, ask the driver to drop you off at the terminal near the public market where tricycles are usually waiting. You can then take a tricycle ride to Mahayahay Port for a fare of only ₱10 ($0.20).
Passenger boats typically depart from Daanbantayan at around 11 AM and 12 noon, and the fare to Kinatarkan Island is around ₱100 ($2). The boat ride takes around 1 hour. It's important to note that boat schedules may vary, so it's recommended to check with the port authorities beforehand to avoid any inconvenience.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Kinatarkan is a small island located 12 km away from the mainland, which gives the community there a super laid-back vibe. Here are some things you can expect when visiting Kinatarkan Island:
Beautiful beaches
Kinatarkan island is home to some of the most pristine and unspoiled beaches in the Philippines, with crystal-clear waters and sand that varies in texture from soft to pebbly.
Snorkeling and diving
The waters around Kinatarkan Island are teeming with marine life. The waters around the island are part of a marine protected area that has been established to conserve the region's unique marine biodiversity.
Island hopping
There are several nearby islands that can be visited as part of an island-hopping tour, including Virgin Island, Hilantagaan Island, and Caohagan Island.
Local culture
Visitors can experience the local way of life on Kinatarkan Island by interacting with the friendly and accommodating locals.
Peaceful and secluded environment
Kinatarkan Island is still relatively undiscovered by tourists, which means that visitors can enjoy a peaceful and tranquil environment away from the crowds of more popular tourist spots.
PLACES TO SEE
The boats coming from Daanbantayan dock at Brgy. Langub. From the moment you set foot on the island, you will immediately see how white the sand is and how blue the water appears.
To get around the island and visit different places, you may need to rent a motorcycle for a minimal fee. The island is surrounded by water, so expect to see beautiful beaches along the way.
You can also rent a boat just like we did going to Laaw Lagoon.
Laaw Lagoon is a beautiful natural lagoon located on the eastern side of Kinatarkan Island, Cebu. The lagoon is surrounded by towering cliffs and lush greenery.
The water in the lagoon is shallow, calm, and clear, allowing visitors to see the colorful marine life and sea grapes underneath. The area around the lagoon is also an excellent place to explore and hike, with numerous trails leading to the surrounding hills, which offer panoramic views of the island and the sea.
There are some other spots around the island that we haven't explored because of time constraints.

WHERE TO STAY
There are a couple of lodging houses and resorts around the island, but I recommend staying at a homestay to fully immerse yourself in the laid-back lifestyle of the locals and also to contribute to their income. Homestays provide a more authentic experience of the island's culture and traditions, as well as giving you the opportunity to interact with the friendly locals and learn more about their way of life. It's a great way to support the local community while enjoying your stay on the island.
If you're planning to visit the island and need assistance with arranging accommodations or tours, you may contact Ate Neneng at 0949 752 6800. She is a trusted local and homestay owner who can provide recommendations and help make your visit a memorable one.
