Today, 6 June, is the Argentine Engineering Day, so so far today, I have already received greetings from several colleagues and friends. I had no idea about this date, but I liked to be congratulated for it. Even though it has been a long time since I studied Food Engineering, this branch of science and technology is still something I love. Of course, there is always someone who asks what a food engineer does, and when I was on a trip to the Turquoise Lagoon in Ushuaia I was able to show this with a practical and funny example 😃.
Hoy, 6 de junio, se celebra el Día de la Ingeniería Argentina, por lo que en lo que va del día, ya he recibido saludos de varios colegas y amigos. No tenía idea de esta fecha, pero me gustó ser felicitada por eso. A pesar de que ya ha pasado mucho tiempo desde que estudié Ingeniería en Alimentos, esta rama de la ciencia y la tecnología sigue siendo algo que me encanta. Por supuesto nunca falta quién pregunta a qué se dedica un Ingeniero en Alimentos, y cuando estaba en de paseo en la Laguna Turquesa de Ushuaia pude mostrarlo con un ejemplo práctico y gracioso 😃.
When it comes to a famous lagoon in Ushuaia, Laguna Esmeralda gets all the accolades. This lagoon receives day after day hundreds of visitors from all over the world. It represents the traditional postcard of your trip to Ushuaia and it is so beautiful that it really deserves that position. But few tourists know that a kilometre away from the beginning of this path is the road to another lagoon, less famous but no less beautiful for that.
Si se trata de una laguna famosa en Ushuaia, sin dudas la Laguna Esmeralda se lleva todos los elogios. Esta laguna es la que recibe día tras día cientos de visitantes de todas partes del mundo. Representa la postal tradicional de tu viaje a Ushuaia y es tan hermosa que realmente se merece ese puesto. Pero pocas turistas saben que a un kilómetro del inicio de ese sendero, se encuentra el camino a otra laguna, menos famosa pero no por eso menos linda.
This trail leads to the so-called Turquoise Lagoon and is much shorter than the one to the Emerald Lagoon: you only have to walk 2 km to reach it, as opposed to the 6 km of the other trail. But these 2 kilometres are much more intense, as they are completely uphill, unlike the trail to the other lagoon, which is almost flat. The good thing is that this slope gives you beautiful views of the landscape, including the Laguna Esmeralda, which is located on the other side of the road.
Este sendero conduce a la llamada Laguna Turquesa y es mucho más corto que aquel hacia la Laguna Esmeralda: solo hay que hacer 2 kilómetros para llegar hasta ella, versus los 6 km del otro camino. Pero estos 2 kilómetros son mucho más intensos, ya que son completamente en subida, a diferencia del sendero de la otra laguna que es casi plano. Lo bueno es que este desnivel te regala unas vistas hermosas del paisaje, incluyendo de la Laguna Esmeralda que se ubica del otro lado de la calle.
After a little more than 40 minutes of intense climbing, you come across a lagoon that seems to blend in with the landscape. You might even expect to see a turquoise water mirror, but in my opinion it is more green than anything else. I even think the name emerald would suit this lagoon better. Anyway, this lagoon is small but it is quieter than the other one with all the screaming tourists, so it is a good choice for a shorter and quieter walk.
Después de poco más de 40 minutos de subida intensa, te encontrás con una laguna que parece desencajar con el paisaje. Incluso uno se espera ver justamente un espejo de agua turquesa, pero en mi opinión es más verde que otra cosa. Incluso creo que el nombre de esmeralda le quedaría mejor a esta laguna. Como sea, esta laguna es pequeña pero es más tranquila que la otra con todos los turistas gritando, así que es una buena opción para un paseo más corto y tranquilo.
As this is an express walk, my fellow volunteer and I had chosen to do it in the morning, before having to work at the hostel in the afternoon. Instead of having lunch overlooking the street, we decided to take our lunch to the mountain and eat there. But when I arrived I realised that I had forgotten cutlery for my salad and she didn't have any because she had only brought a sandwich. To solve my lunch problem, I had the idea of making a spoon out of the metal wrapper from her sandwich: it worked quite well, and I was able to demonstrate to her what I had learned in my Food Engineering degree. Be resourceful when it comes to eating 😂.
Como este es un paseo express, mi compañera de voluntariado y yo habíamos elegido hacerlo por la mañana, antes de tener que trabajar en el hostel por la tarde. En lugar de almorzar con vista a la calle, decidimos llevar nuestro almuerzo a la montaña y comer ahí. Pero cuando llegué me di cuenta de que me había olvidado cubiertos para mi ensalada y ella no tenía porque solo había llevado un sandwich. Para resolver mi almuerzo, se me ocurrió fabricar una cuchara con el envoltorio de metal de su sandwich: funcionó bastante bien, y le pude demostrar lo que aprendí en mi carrera Ingeniería en Alimentos. Ser ingenioso a la hora de tener que comer 😂.
After lunch, we had read that near this lagoon there was another one, so we tried to climb a little higher. The terrain around the Turquoise Lagoon was quite difficult, with many loose stones and almost invisible paths, as not many people frequent this place. That worked against us a bit, as we couldn't follow the precise trail to the other place we wanted to go to. At least from up there we had a good view of the mountains, and although we saw a lagoon below, it was not the one we were expecting to see.
Después de almorzar, habíamos leído que cerca de esta laguna había otra, así que intentamos subir un poco más. El terreno de los alrededores de la Laguna Turquesa era bastante complicado, con muchas piedras sueltas y senderos casi invisibles, ya que no mucha gente frecuenta este lugar. Eso nos jugó un poco en contra, ya que no pudimos seguir el rastro preciso hacia el otro lugar al que queríamos ir. Por lo menos, desde ahí arriba pudimos tener unas buenas vistas de las montañas, y aunque vimos una laguna más abajo, esa no era la que esperábamos ver.
That wasn't the first time I forgot to bring the proper cutlery on a trek: when I went to Laguna del Caminate, I didn't have a fork, so I ate my noodles with a knife. But this time, I improvised, and luckily it worked. In all my years, my colleagues and I have seen many funny images of what a Food Engineer is supposed to do, such as a sandwich made with screws, a dessert built with a crane and machines, or even a wall plastered with ground beef. Now, my spoon made from a container from another food has been added to the jokes. That day, a fork may have been missing, but the laughter wasn't 😂.
Esa no fue la primera vez que me olvidaba de llevar los cubiertos adecuados a un trekking: cuando fui a la Laguna del Caminate, no tenía tenedor así que comí mis fideos con ayuda de un cuchillo. Pero esta vez, toco la improvisación que por suerte funcionó. En todos mis años, mis colegas y yo vimos muchas imagenes graciosas de qué es lo que se supone que hace un Ingeniero en Alimentos, como por ejemplo un sandwich con tornillos, un postre construido con grua y máquinas, o hasta una pared revocada con carne molida. Ahora, se agregó a los chistes mi cuchara fabricada con un envase de otro alimento. Ese día habrá faltado un tenedor, pero las risas no lo hicieron 😂.
