One of the cool things I had missed doing during my first visit to Ushuaia was visiting Jimbo's Cave. When I had asked to go there at the time, my co-worker at the hostel discouraged me from trekking there because it was dangerous and because the trail was closed. Of course I complied and missed the walk, but this year I asked again and no one stopped me so I went anyway. In the end, this was the right decision, not only because it was a beautiful walk, but also because I was able to see the cave with my own eyes some time before it sadly collapsed 🙃.
Una de las cosas geniales que me había faltado hacer durante mi primera visita a Ushuaia fue visitar la Cueva de Jimbo. Cuando en ese momento había preguntado para ir, mi compañero de trabajo en el hostel me desalentó a hacer ese trekking porque era peligroso y porque la senda se encontraba cerrada. Por supuesto que obedecí y me perdí el paseo, pero este año volví a consultar y nadie me detuvo así que fui de todos modos. Finalmente, esta fue una decisión acertada, no solo porque fue una caminata hermosa, sino porque pude ver con mis propios ojos la cueva un tiempo antes de que tristemente se derrumbara 🙃.
In all my time in the city at the End of the World I was able to do a lot of trekking, but the one to Jimbo Cave was one of the most beautiful. I really wanted to visit this place, but I was still scared because of the recommendations I had received the previous year not to go. So I waited patiently until the hostel turned up a guest who also wanted to go and we went together. As we headed for the trailhead towards the Tierra del Fuego National Park, we did indeed come across two signs indicating that the trail was closed and not to proceed 🙃.
En todo mi tiempo en la ciudad del Fin del Mundo pude hacer muchísimo trekking, pero aquel hasta la Cueva de Jimbo fue uno de los más hermosos. Yo tenía muchas ganas de visitar este lugar, pero seguía asustada por las recomendaciones de no ir que había recibido el año anterior. Por eso, esperé pacientemente hasta que el hostel apareció un huésped que también quería ir y fuimos juntos. Cuando nos dirigimos al inicio del sendero en dirección al Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, efectivamente nos cruzamos con dos carteles que indicaban que la senda estaba cerrada y que no avanzáramos 🙃.
We both said we would continue on the road, but if it became dangerous we would come back. That's what we did, but at no time was the road that complicated. In fact, we passed a lot of people who were also going to the cave. The duration of this hike was estimated at three and a half hours, in which we would pass through a forest, a snail's uphill to the edge of a mountain, a few kilometres over it and finally a last climb up to the cave. With such an exciting description, the more I wanted to go and see what it was all about 😃.
Ambos dijimos que continuaríamos el camino, pero que si se volvía peligroso volveríamos. Eso hicimos, pero en ningún momento el camino fue tan complicado. De hecho, nos cruzamos un montón de gente que también estaba yendo hacia la cueva. La duración de esta caminata estaba estimada en tres horas y media, en las que pasaríamos por un bosque, un caracol ascendente hasta el filo de una montaña, unos cuantos kilómetros sobre él y finalmente una última subida hasta la cueva. Con esta descripción tan emocionante, más quería ir a ver de qué se trataba 😃.
This whole area of Ushuaia is called Cañadón de la Oveja. It is a beautiful place between the mountains where you have a good view of the valley and also of the Beagle Channel behind you. The day of this visit was the 18th of November, in the middle of spring, so we had an incredible day of sunshine and no wind. All the colours were bright and beautiful, and although the day was a bit warm, there was still some snow 😃.
Toda esta zona de Ushuaia se llama Cañadón de la Oveja. Se trata de un lugar hermoso entre las montañas en donde tenes una buena vista del valle y también del Canal de Beagle a tus espaldas. El día de esta visita fue el 18 de noviembre, en plena primavera, por lo que tuvimos un día increíble de sol y de nada de viento. Todos los colores se veían brillantes y hermosos, y aunque el día estaba algo cálido, todavía quedaba un poco de nieve 😃.
When we finished crossing the forest and the edge of the mountain we reached the part indicated as the last climb before the cave. At this point we came across a third ‘no trespassing’ sign, but we continued anyway because all the people there were doing so. The climb was no big deal, but the snow always makes it a bit tricky. It must have taken us more than half an hour on this small climb alone before we finally saw the cave in the distance 😃.
Cuando terminamos de atravesar el bosque y el filo de la montaña llegamos a la parte indicada como la última subida antes de la cueva. En este punto nos encontramos con un tercer cartel de "no pasar", pero igualmente continuamos porque toda la gente ahí lo hacía. La subida no era la gran cosa, pero la nieve siempre complica un poco el paso. Habremos tardado más de media hora solo en esta pequeña subida, hasta que finalmente vimos la cueva a lo lejos 😃.
As always, I had tried to see as few photos of this place as possible. I wanted to be surprised once I was there and I was. As we approached the cave, we came across a fourth no trespassing sign. The sign explicitly stated that the cave was not to be entered because of the risk of collapse, and that was in plain sight because rocks, ice and water were falling from the ceiling all the time. With the warm temperatures, it seemed that the cave was melting quite fast 🙃.
Como siempre, yo había intentado ver la menor cantidad posible de fotos de este lugar. Quería sorprenderme una vez que estuviera ahí y así fue. Cuando nos acercamos a la cueva, nos encontramos con un cuarto cartel de no pasar. El cartel especificaba explícitamente que no se debía ingresar a la cueva por riesgo de derrumbe, y eso estaba a la vista porque todo el tiempo caían piedras, hielo y agua del techo. Con las temperaturas cálidas, parecía que la cueva se derretía bastante rápido 🙃.
In reality, this ‘cave’ is a glacial formation that has an entrance and an exit, making it more like a tunnel. Looking at it is imposing and there is something peculiar about it, as if it hypnotises you into wanting to go in despite all those falling rocks and ice. The real reason for the closure of this path up to here was because in 2022 a tourist entered the cave and an ice fell on him, sadly ending in tragedy. All those warnings we saw on the trail are for prevention 😶.
En realidad, esta "cueva" se trata de una formación glaciaria que tiene una entrada y una salida, por lo que se asemeja más a un túnel. Mirarla es imponente y hay algo peculiar, como si te hipnotizara a querer meterte a pesar de todas esas piedras y hielos cayendo. El verdadero motivo de la clausura de este sendero hasta acá fue porque justamente en el año 2022 un turista ingresó a la cueva y un hielo cayó encima de él, terminando tristemente en tragedia. Todas esas advertencias que vimos en el camino son para prevención 😶.
But all of us who were there that day were very respectful and no one entered the cave, as the signs said. We did get close enough to take pictures, because the size of the cave was really impressive. Besides, all those black lines formed a beautiful drawing on this glacier, very photogenic. I guess that millions of years ago some river must have flowed in there and eroded it into that beautiful shape 😃.
Pero todos los que estuvimos ahí ese día éramos muy respetuosos y nadie entró a la cueva, tal cual lo decían los carteles. Si nos acercamos bastante a tomar fotos, porque en verdad el tamaño era impresionante. Además, todas esas líneas negras formaban un dibujo hermoso en este glaciar, muy fotogénico. Supongo que hace millones de años algún río habrá corrido ahí dentro y lo habrá erosionado con esa hermosa forma 😃.
My companion and I relaxed a bit after taking a few photos and having walked 10 kilometres there. We had our lunch and even played snow tobogganing, it was great fun. We also took the opportunity to climb up the side of the cave to the other side and see its other entrance. Some time later, we saw reports of people going through the cave from one side to the other, ignoring all the dangers and even the background of the accident that had happened. As beautiful as nature is, why disrespect it like that 🙃?
Mi acompañante y yo nos relajamos un poco después de tomarnos unas cuantas fotos y haber caminado 10 kilómetros hasta ahí. Tuvimos nuestro almuerzo y hasta jugamos al tobogán en la nieve, fue muy divertido. También aprovechamos para subir por el costado de la cueva hasta el otro lado y ver su otra entrada. Tiempo después, vimos noticias de gente que atravesaba la cueva por dentro de un lado a otro, ignorando todos los peligros e incluso el antecedente del accidente ocurrido. Con lo linda que es la naturaleza, ¿por qué faltarle el respeto así 🙃?
After this hike in November, on the 4th and 5th of January I had the opportunity to go camping in this area for a 25 kilometre trek, where I passed the cave again and saw it completely uncovered with snow. A week later, on 11 January 2025, the news came out that Jimbo Cave had collapsed. Naturally, the cave collapsed no injuries involved and now only the remains of this beautiful glacier remain, as you can see here 🙁.
Después de esta caminata en noviembre, los días 4 y 5 de enero tuve la oportunidad de ir a acampar a esta zona para hacer un trekking de 25 kilómetros, en el que volví a pasar por la cueva y pude verla totalmente descubierta de nieve. Una semana después, el 11 de enero de 2025, salió la noticia de que la Cueva de Jimbo se había derrumbado. Naturalmente, la cueva se cayó sin heridos involucrados y ahora solo quedan los restos de este hermoso glaciar 🙁.
The collapse of the cave was a very moving event among the community of Ushuaia and even more so among the trekking enthusiasts who were able to enjoy this place. All the news portals were talking about it, mentioning that Ushuaia lost one of its main natural attractions. I was also very sad to have to tell the guests who came later that the cave no longer existed, and although I still encouraged them to do the whole route because the canyon is beautiful, of course they no longer had the same interest. I for one am glad that I was able to go twice while it was still possible 😅.
El derrumbe de la cueva fue un hecho muy conmovedor entre la comunidad de Ushuaia y más aún entre los amantes del trekking que lograron disfrutar de este lugar. En todos los portales de noticias se hablaba de eso, haciendo mención a que Ushuaia perdía uno de sus principales atractivos naturales. A mí también me dio mucha pena tener que decirles a los huéspedes que vinieron luego que la cueva ya no existía, y aunque igual los alentaba a hacer todo el recorrido porque el cañadón es hermoso, por supuesto ya no tenían el mismo interés. Por mi parte me alegra haber podido ir dos veces mientras se pudo 😅.

The walk to this cave was beautiful and I was glad I went, being prudent enough to enjoy the scenery without any problems. It also touches me to think of all the time that the cave existed and that just now it has collapsed, taking away the possibility for future generations to see something as beautiful as this. Nobody gave official explanations as to why this happened, although it was known that it was collapsing bit by bit, but I don't think anyone expected it to happen just now. Anyway, it was good that it happened this year and not last year, otherwise I would never have seen it 😅.
La caminata hasta esta cueva fue hermosa y me alegré por haber ido, siendo lo suficientemente prudente como para disfrutar del paisaje sin problemas. También me conmueve pensar en todo el tiempo que la cueva existió y que justo ahora se haya derrumbado, quitándole la posibilidad a las futuras generaciones de ver algo tan lindo como esto. Nadie dio explicaciones oficiales de por qué ocurrió esto, aunque se sabía que se estaba derrumbando de a poco, pero creo que nadie se esperaba que fuera justo ahora. Como sea, fue bueno que esto haya sucedido este año y no el anterior, sino yo nunca la hubiese visto 😅.
