After our experience crossing the famous Strait of Magellan, nobody was hurt or broke down on the barge and we finally arrived in Punta Arenas in Chile. I would describe our visit to this city as fleeting, as we only visited some shopping malls to check if everything was cheaper than in Argentina, as I had been told (answer: yes it is), but we didn't buy anything, we just had dinner and went to sleep. The most relevant thing that happened to us in Punta Arenas was that a wheel part was stolen from our car while it was parked in the street, but we wouldn't notice it until a week later. In the meantime, we continued on our way to Puerto Natales, where another barge was waiting for us to sail 😃.
Después de nuestra experiencia cruzando el famoso Estrecho de Magallanes, nadie salió herido ni se descompuso en la barcaza y finalmente llegamos a Punta Arenas en Chile. Calificaría nuestra visita en esta ciudad como fugaz, ya que solamente recorrimos algunos shoppings para verificar si todo era más barato que en Argentina, como me habían dicho (respuesta: si lo es), pero no compramos nada, solo cenamos y nos fuimos a dormir. Lo más relevante que nos pasó en Punta Arenas fue que nos robaron una pieza de la rueda del auto mientras quedó estacionado en la calle, pero no lo notaríamos sino hasta una semana después. Mientras tanto, continuamos el camino hasta Puerto Natales, donde otra barcaza nos esperaba para navegar 😃.
Our original idea was to arrive in Punta Arenas from Porvenir before noon, but as the barge was delayed by strong winds, we ended up arriving at almost 5pm. As usual, we had no accommodation and had to look for one while we wandered around the shopping mall and had dinner. All this took time away from our time to walk around the outside of the city, but we didn't regret it too much because there was still a long trip ahead of us. The next day, we left the hostel we had booked for $30 a night for both of us and set off on our four hour drive to Puerto Natales.
Nuestra idea original era llegar a Punta Arenas desde Porvenir antes del mediodía, pero como la barcaza se atrasó por los vientos fuertes, terminamos llegando casi a las 5 de la tarde. Como siempre, no teníamos alojamiento y tuvimos que buscar uno mientras paseábamos un poco por el shopping y cenábamos. Todo eso nos sacó tiempo para recorrer los exteriores de la ciudad, pero tampoco nos lamentamos tanto porque aún quedaba mucho viaje por delante. Al otro día, dejamos el hostel que reservamos por $30 la noche para ambos y emprendimos nuestro viaje de cuatro horas hasta Puerto Natales.
While I was in Ushuaia, I listened to all the travellers going from there to Puerto Natales. What I didn't know was that some time later I would also have the opportunity to visit this Chilean city. M and I had to go to this city to take a boat that would take us to almost the beginning of the Carretera Austral, which was our main travel plan. It was the third day of our journey and we were not even close yet, because that little boat trip had a duration of three more nights.
Mientras yo estaba en Ushuaia, escuchaba a todos los viajeros que desde ahí, se iban a Puerto Natales. Lo que no sabía era que tiempo después yo también tendría la oportunidad de conocer esta ciudad chilena. M y yo debíamos ir a esta ciudad para tomar un barco que nos llevaría hasta casi el inicio de la Carretera Austral, el cual era nuestro plan principal de viaje. Era el tercer día de nuestra travesía y todavía no estábamos ni cerca, porque ese pequeño viaje de barco tenía una duración de tres noches más.
We were both excited because we had never spent so much time on a ship before, but we still had to board at 8 PM and it was only 5 PM. This gave us enough time to get around the city a bit, plus the day was beautiful despite the cold. Puerto Natales has a long and beautiful waterfront to walk along, with several photo spots, such as the two people who seem to be floating on the waters of the Señoret Channel.
Ambos estabamos emocionados porque nunca habíamos pasado tanto tiempo en un barco, pero igualmente teníamos que embarcar a las 8 PM y apenas eran las 5 PM. Esto nos dio tiempo suficiente como para recorrer un poco la ciudad, además de que el día estaba lindo a pesar del frio. Puerto Natales tiene una costanera larga y muy linda para recorrer, con distintos puntos fotografiables, como por ejemplo el de las dos personas que parecen flotar sobre las aguas del Canal Señoret.
This city also reminded me a bit of Ushuaia because of its aesthetics. Well, I haven't visited many other countries, so I can only compare it to Argentina. But somehow everything felt different at the same time. This part of the city preserves historical buildings but there are also many modern ones that can be seen during the walk.
Esta ciudad también me recordó un poco a Ushuaia por su estética. Bueno, no he visitado muchos otros países, así que solo lo puedo comparar con Argentina. Pero de alguna forma todo se sentía diferente al mismo tiempo. Esta parte de la ciudad conserva edificios históricos pero también hay otros tantos modernos que se pueden ver durante el paseo.
Another interesting point on the waterfront, apart from those giant fingers that seem to stick out of the ground, is the mylodon sculpture. One of the reasons why this place is famous is because this is where the large cavern where this prehistoric mammal, 3 metres high and weighing 3 tons, lived was found. You can also visit this exact place as it is made park style, but we didn't have enough time to go, so we had to settle for seeing the sculpture in real size.
Otro punto interesante sobre la costanera, además de esos dedos gigantes que parecen salir del suelo, es la escultura al milodón. Una de las razones por las que este lugar es famoso es porque aquí fue donde se encontró la gran caverna en donde vivía este mamífero prehistórico de 3 metros de alto y 3 toneladas de peso. También se puede visitar este lugar exacto ya que está hecho estilo parque, pero no teníamos tiempo suficiente como para ir, por lo que tuvimos que conformarnos con ver la escultura en tamaño real.
In addition to the waterfront, we also walked around the inner streets and what would a city be without its square and its church. This was the busiest place in the city because there were many businesses around, but we went a little closer to see the church to see what it looked like. Its construction was simple, but it was still neat and open to the public.
Además de la costanera, también recorrimos un poco las calles de adentro y qué sería de una ciudad sin su plaza y su iglesia. Este era el lugar más concurrido de la ciudad porque habían muchos negocios alrededor, pero nos acercamos un poco a ver la iglesia para ver cómo era. Su construcción era sencilla, pero igual estaba prolija y abierta al público.
We were so busy walking back and forth that I almost forgot to leave one of my new stickers in this city. I like to have them and stick them everywhere as a token of my time there. On this occasion, we headed back towards the port area because it was getting close to boarding time and I found that the canal viewpoint would be a good place to leave it. There was a fixed binoculars and that's where it stayed. What do you think 😃?
Estábamos tan entretenidos en el paseo de acá para allá que casi me olvido de dejar uno de mis nuevos stickers en esta ciudad. Me gusta tenerlos e ir pegandolos por todas partes como muestra de mi paso por ahí. En esta ocasión, volvimos hacia la zona del puerto porque ya se hacía la hora de embarcar y encontré que el mirador del canal sería un buen lugar para dejarlo. Había un binocular fijo y fue justo ahí donde se quedó. ¿Qué les parece 😃?
The first few days of my trip had me very excited to be in another country, and luckily this feeling lasted until the very last moment. My past self did not know that at some point I would visit this place, the destination of almost all backpackers who arrive in Ushuaia and decide to go by land to travel the Carretera Austral. After that, we had a long sailing trip ahead of us, so we took the opportunity to walk on dry land as much as we could: we knew it would take us a while to get back on it 😅.
Los primeros días de mi viaje me tenían muy emocionada por estar en otro país, y por suerte este sentimiento se extendió hasta el último momento. Mi yo del pasado no sabía que en algún momento visitaría este lugar, destino de casi todos los mochileros que llegan a Ushuaia y deciden irse por vía terrestre a recorrer la Carretera Austral. Después de eso, nos esperaba un largo recorrido de navegación, por lo que aprovechamos para caminar en tierra firme todo lo que pudimos: sabíamos que tardaríamos un buen rato en volver a pisarla 😅.
