It was the third day of our boat trip through the Chilean fjords, and time was passing much faster than one might think. The truth is, we were quite entertained, so it didn't feel overwhelming at all. We met quite a few people on board, perhaps motivated by the lack of internet connection we all had and the fact that we were the only ones in the few square meters of the boat. All that time had to pass until we finally saw other people and discovered something more than mountains with glaciers and seemingly endless water 😅.
Era el tercer día de nuestro viaje en barco por los fiordos chilenos y el tiempo estaba pasando mucho más rápido de lo que uno pudiera pensar. La verdad que estábamos bastante entretenidos, así que no se nos hizo pesado para nada. Conocimos bastante gente a bordo, quizás impulsados por la no-conexión a internet que teníamos todos y que éramos los únicos en los pocos metros cuadrados de ese barco. Todo ese tiempo tuvo que pasar hasta que al fin vimos a otras personas y descubrimos algunas cosas más que montañas con glaciares y agua que parecía infinita 😅.
After sailing the Messier Channel for so long (it wasn't until the third day that I thought to ask what it was called), we were able to fully understand what a fjord was and how it originated. The people in charge of the food service were also our guides, so they taught us a lot along the way. They were the ones who told us that around 11 AM we would be arriving at our only stop before finally getting off, and that if we wanted to step out onto dry land for a bit, we could.
Después de tanto navegar el Canal Messier (recién al tercer día se me ocurrió preguntar cómo se llamaba), pudimos entender bien lo que era un fiordo y cómo se originó. Las personas encargadas del servicio de comida también eran nuestros guías, así que nos enseñaron muchas cosas en el camino. Fueron ellos mismos quienes nos avisaron que alrededor de las 11 AM estaríamos llegando a nuestra única parada intermedia antes de bajarnos definitivamente, y que si queríamos salir un poco a pisar tierra firme podríamos hacerlo.
It was Puerto Edén, an island settlement of no more than 200 people. This place had a port where the ship would unload cargo, and some passengers would also stay here, either as tourists or returning from "the mainland." It was very strange to think that we had traveled two days from Punta Arenas to get there: it gives an idea of how remote this place is.
Se trataba de Puerto Edén, un asentamiento isleño de no más de 200 personas. Este lugar tenía un puerto en donde el barco debía descargar mercadería y algunos pasajeros también se quedarían acá, a nivel turístico o para volver de "el continente". Fue muy raro pensar que estuvimos viajando dos días desde Punta Arenas para llegar hasta ahí: eso da idea de lo remoto que es este lugar.
This stop lasted an estimated two hours, from the time all the cargo was unloaded to the time people were preparing to board. Imagine that this ship is the only service that arrives here, and it does so once a week in each direction. That's all the communication there is with both Punta Arenas and Puerto Yungay, the two ends of the route. In any case, there's a school and a health center here, as well as small supply stores and even tourist accommodations. Can you imagine living in a place like this?
Esta parada tenía una duración estimada de dos horas entre que se completaba toda la descarga de mercancías y la gente se preparaba para abordar. Imaginen que este barco es el único servicio que llega acá y lo hace una vez por semana en cada sentido. Esa es toda la comunicación que hay tanto con Punta Arenas como con Puerto Yungay, los dos extremos del recorrido. De todos modos, en este lugar hay una escuela y un centro de salud, además de pequeñas tiendas de abastecimiento y hasta alojamientos turísticos. ¿Se imaginan vivir en un lugar cómo este?
There are no cars in this place, so it's a pedestrian village built on wooden walkways. What we did see were many boats around, probably to move more quickly around the island's outskirts. Unfortunately, they didn't let us explore anything, so we had to wait at the port. There was some kind of fair set up there where local people were selling food and crafts. And there was Wi-Fi, so our isolation was broken.
En este lugar no circulan autos, por lo que es un pueblo peatonal construido sobre pasarelas de madera. Lo que sí se veían eran muchos barcos alrededor, seguramente para moverse más rápido en los márgenes de la isla. Lamentablemente no nos dejaron ir a recorrer nada, así que tuvimos que quedarnos en el puerto esperando. Ahí había montada una especie de feria donde la gente local vendía comida y artesanías. Y había Wi-Fi, así que ahí se rompió nuestro aislamiento.
By 1 PM and we were ready to depart, the weather had cleared considerably, and we still had more than 20 hours of sailing ahead of us until we reached our destination. We had lunch included, of course, and while we might have wanted to go and rest in our seats, the guides/stewards were passing by each area of the boat to let us know whenever there was something interesting to see. One of them was a statue of Our Lady of the Seas, which, of course, was too far away for my humble cell phone to capture.
Cuando se hicieron la 1 PM y estuvimos listos para partir, el clima había mejorado bastante y todavía nos esperaban más de 20 horas de navegación hasta llegar a nuestro destino. Tuvimos nuestro almuerzo incluido por supuesto, y aunque quizás uno quería ir a descansar a su asiento, los mozos/guías pasaban por cada recinto del barco a avisar cada vez que había algo interesante para ver. Una de ellas fue una estatua de la Virgen de los Mares, la cual por supuesto estaba muy lejos como para que mi humilde celular pudiera capturarla.
Another thing we saw was a small lighthouse, or so it seemed, although its location wasn't the most convenient. There were a lot of photographers on board, and we were seeing so many incredible places, so we took tons of photos as souvenirs. After so many mountains and water, it was nice to see a little more.
Otra de las cosas que vimos fue un pequeño faro, o eso parecía, aunque su ubicación no sería la más conveniente. Habían muchos fotógrafos a bordo, y la verdad es que estábamos viendo muchos lugares increíbles así que nos llevábamos de recuerdo muchísimas fotos. Después de tanta montaña y agua, era bueno ver un poco más.
And when a good while had passed and the cold forced us to go inside for shelter, the improvised guides alerted us again, telling us we had to go out and see something one more time. Of course, it wasn't mandatory, but no one wanted to miss anything. And this recommendation was the best, because we were able to see the wreck of a ship from 1968. This ship was called the Captain Leonidas, and after so much time, it had already worn off and had been completely colonized by birds.
Y cuando había pasado un buen rato y el frío nos obligó a ir adentro a resguardarnos, otra vez llegó el alerta de los guías improvisados para decirnos que teníamos que salir a ver algo una vez más. Por supuesto no era obligatorio, pero nadie quería perderse de nada. Y esta recomendación fue la mejor, porque pudimos ver el naufragio de un barco de 1968. Esta barco se llamaba Capitán Leónidas y después de tanto tiempo, ya tenía su estética oxidada y había sido completamente colonizado por las aves.
Another highlight of our third day on the boat was that we were finally able to shower: our last shower had been Thursday morning before leaving our accommodations in Punta Arenas, and it was already Saturday, and I wasn't going to last much longer. It wasn't the best shower of my life, but I was grateful to have it. This service had everything you needed, and for $156 (in my case, a freebie), it wasn't bad at all. Nothing to complain about 😅.
Otra cosa relevante de nuestro tercer día en el barco fue que al final pudimos bañarnos: nuestra última ducha había sido el jueves a la mañana antes de dejar el alojamiento de Punta Arenas y ya era sábado y yo ya no iba a durar mucho tiempo más así. No fue el mejor baño de mi vida pero agradecí poder hacerlo. Este servicio tuvo todo lo necesario y por $156 (en mi caso, de regalo), no estuvo nada mal. Nada de qué quejarme 😅.
