On our drive up from Maryland to Maine, we made a pit stop at The Bronx Zoo. In the weeks leading up to our trip, I had been debating whether or not to go. It was right there on the way, and my daughter would love it. On the other hand, I didn't want to make stops in NYC to avoid unnecessary traffic. I made the decision impulsively as we sat in traffic at a complete stop on The George Washington Bridge. I had to use the bathroom really bad after my morning coffee and Gabby sat in the back whining because of the grueling traffic. It reached a point where the Bronx Zoo was no longer a question. It wasn't about if we wanted to go, but how do we get there?
It was a hot day and we didn't get through the whole zoo within the couple hours we were there. The Bronx zoo is expansive and renowned as one of the best zoos in the United States. If you like peacocks, this is the place for you, as they have many of them. Some are even walking around in the open areas with visitors. My favorite animals were the giraffe and rhinoceros. To me, they are the most surreal. The giraffe looks like it might come from a different planet, while the rhinoceros looks like something you would see in the Prehistoric age. My photos do not do any justice for how tall the giraffe is in-person.
After doing a lot of walking, it is refreshing to hop on the monorail tour to see a variety of animals. My daughter also loved the Bug Carousel that features a variety of beetle and insect species for kids to ride. My daughter chose the praying mantis. It was a hectic day and I didn't get as many photos as I would have liked. I have included the few photos I did take below.
Peacock and Nubian Ibex in the Gelada Reserve
Napping Gorilla
