This time I want to share with you a very pleasant experience: my recent trip to the city of Évora, in Portugal. I made this getaway with my partner, mainly driven by our shared passion for discovering new places, which are rich in history and will take us a bit out of the routine.

Como ambos somos amantes de las aventuras, investigábamos varias ciudades que nos llamaran la atención. Así fue como pensamos en Évora, un destino que había captado nuestra atención con anterioridad, cuando íbamos de camino a Lisboa, y vimos su hermoso Acueducto, que nos recordó al de Segovia, la ciudad donde vivimos, y que también es Patrimonio de la Humanidad.
As we are both adventure lovers, we researched various cities that caught our attention. That's how we came up with Évora, a destination that had caught our attention before, when we were on our way to Lisbon, and we saw its beautiful Aqueduct, which reminded us of the one in Segovia, the city where we live, and which is also a World Heritage Site.

This trip was brief, but still very enriching. In this article, I want to guide you through its streets and history, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

🗺️ El inicio de mi viaje
Hicimos nuestro viaje en autobús, partiendo desde España. El viaje fue de aproximadamente unas 6 horas, pero valió completamente la pena. Al llegar a la estación de autobuses, nos percatamos, que la terminal estaba muy cerca de nuestro alojamiento, lo que nos facilitó establecernos. Évora es una ciudad pequeña, por lo que se puede recorrer en un día o dos, sin perderse lo más importante.
🗺️ The start of my journey
We made our journey by bus, starting from Spain. The journey took about 6 hours, but it was completely worth it. When we arrived at the bus station, we realised that the terminal was very close to our accommodation, which made it easy for us to settle in. Evora is a small city, so it can be covered in a day or two, without missing the most important sights.

No les estoy mintiendo cuando les digo que esta ciudad es, una de las más ricas en historia de Portugal. Desde el inicio nos envolvió en un aire especial: el clima era agradable y la arquitectura (con tonos cálidos, edificios antiguos y calles empedradas), nos recibió con una cálida acogida. Apenas dejamos nuestras pertenencias, nos dispusimos a recorrer las calles y rincones de este lugar, que aunque lleno de vida, parece varado en el tiempo.
I am not lying when I tell you that this city is one of the richest in history in Portugal. From the very beginning we were enveloped in a special atmosphere: the weather was pleasant and the architecture (with warm tones, old buildings and cobbled streets), welcomed us with a warm welcome. As soon as we left our belongings behind, we set out to explore the streets and corners of this place, which, although full of life, seems to be stuck in time.

💧 Acueducto de Évora:
Cuando arribamos a la ciudad, como era de esperarse, nos encontramos en primer lugar al Acueducto da Água de Prata, una imponente estructura que nos abrió las puertas y nos dio la bienvenida al lugar, tal como si nos contase historias sobre su pasado. Antes de continuar, quiero aclarar que este acueducto fue construido en el Siglo XVII, y la función que tuvo en su tiempo fue la llevar el agua al centro de la ciudad.
💧 Évora Aqueduct:
When we arrived in the city, as expected, we first encountered the Acueducto da Água de Prata, an imposing structure that opened its doors and welcomed us to the place, as if it were telling us stories about its past. Before we continue, I would like to clarify that this aqueduct was built in the 17th century, and its function in its time was to carry water to the city centre.

Hay un detalle que me resultó muy curioso y que de cierta forma llamó mi atención, la razón de esto es que no lo había visto antes en sitios similares, y es que en algunos tramos, se pueden observar casas construidas dentro de los propios arcos de la estructura, integrándose con un aire muy particular e interesante a la arquitectura del mismo y creando una mágica mezcla entre lo elegante y lo cotidiano.
There is a detail that I found very curious and that somehow caught my attention, the reason for this is that I had not seen it before in similar places, and that is that in some sections, you can see houses built inside the arches of the structure itself, integrating with a very particular and interesting air to the architecture of it and creating a magical mix between the elegant and the everyday.
⛲ Plaza Do Giraldo:
Estando como tal en el corazón de la ciudad, uno de los primeros lugares que visitamos fue La Plaza Do Giraldo, el centro neurálgico de la ciudad. Que además de ser bastante concurrido, tanto por turistas como lugareños, es el principal punto para visitar distintos lugares de interés en la ciudad. Debido a que desde allí se puede caminar a diferentes destinos o tomar el transporte público si fuese necesario.
⛲ Do Giraldo Square:
Being as such in the heart of the city, one of the first places we visited was The Plaza Do Giraldo, the nerve centre of the city. Besides being quite crowded, both by tourists and locals, it is the main point to visit different places of interest in the city. Because from there you can walk to different destinations or take public transport if necessary.
La plaza se encontraba repleta de tiendas, cafeterías y restaurantes, la mayoría de los menús tenían precios muy asequibles y además las ofertas gastronómicas eran excelentes, invitando a sentarse un rato, a disfrutar del ambiente. Después de degustar un bocado rápido, nos dispusimos a recorrer los pequeños comercios de la zona; fue allí donde compramos la mayoría de los souvenirs que llevamos a casa, y que regalamos a familiares y amigos, postales y accesorios que fueron hechos a mano, todos muy bonitos y que reflejaban la esencia de la ciudad.
The square was full of shops, cafés and restaurants, most of the menus were very reasonably priced and the food on offer was excellent, inviting you to sit for a while and enjoy the atmosphere. After a quick bite to eat, we set out to browse the small shops in the area; it was there that we bought most of the souvenirs that we took home, which we gave to friends and family, postcards and accessories that were handmade, all very nice and reflecting the essence of the city.
🏺 El Templo Romano:
Otro de los puntos más emblemáticos de la ciudad, es el Templo de Diana, erróneamente es conocido así, ya que por mucho tiempo se tuvo la creencia de que, estaba dedicado a la diosa romana con dicho nombre. Solo recientemente se investigó y se supo que fue creado en honor al emperador César Augusto.
🏺 The Roman Temple:
Another of the most emblematic points of the city, is the Temple of Diana, erroneously known as such, since for a long time it was believed that it was dedicated to the Roman goddess with that name. Only recently was it investigated and it was discovered that it was created in honour of the emperor Caesar Augustus.
Ubicado en el mismo centro de la ciudad, nos impresionó desde el primer momento y captó nuestra atención, como la de todos los turistas que se paseaban por allí. Sus columnas de granito y mármol son una huella imborrable, del antiguo Imperio Romano, en lo que hoy es Portugal.
Located in the very centre of the city, it impressed us from the very first moment and captured our attention, as well as that of all the tourists who strolled by. Its granite and marble columns are an indelible trace of the ancient Roman Empire in what is now Portugal.
🌿 Mirador del Jardín de Diana:
También en el centro de la ciudad y muy cerca del Templo Romano, nos encontramos con este mirador, siendo un sitio para descansar y apreciar la belleza panorámica de la ciudad, hicimos una pausa a lo ajetreado del viaje, y retomamos fuerzas allí para proseguir.
🌿 Diana's Garden Viewpoint:
Also in the centre of the city and very close to the Roman Temple, we found this viewpoint, being a place to rest and appreciate the panoramic beauty of the city, we took a break from the hectic trip, and regained strength there to continue.
Adornado con un busto en honor al médico Barahona, figura destacada de la ciudad según lo que leí, además de lo agradable del ambiente y la calma que se respira en el lugar, debo decir que lo convierte en un sitio que se caracteriza por lo acogedor, en el que si te distraes, se te pueden ir las horas fácilmente, volviéndolo un momento agradable y reflexivo del viaje.
Adorned with a bust in honour of the doctor Barahona, an outstanding figure in the city according to what I read, in addition to the pleasant atmosphere and the calm that permeates the place, I must say that it makes it a place that is characterised by its cosiness, in which if you get distracted, the hours can easily slip away, making it a pleasant and reflective moment of the trip.
⛪ Catedral de Évora:
Continuando nuestro recorrido, llegamos a la Catedral de Évora. Su precio de entrada fue de 5 euros (aunque según vimos en la web, puede variar dependiendo del tipo de entrada y la temporada), pero sinceramente, vale la pena pagarlo, además de ser un precio bastante económico.
⛪ Évora Cathedral:
Continuing our tour, we arrived at the Évora Cathedral. The entrance fee was 5 euros (although according to what we saw on the website, it can vary depending on the type of ticket and the season), but honestly, it is worth paying it, as well as being quite cheap.

Su interior nos dejó sin palabras y captó nuestra atención, por la altura de las naves, la piedra tallada y el ambiente elegante. Pero sin dudas, uno de sus mayores encantos, fue el acceso al tejado, donde pudimos deleitarnos con unas hermosas vistas de la ciudad.
Its interior left us speechless and captured our attention, due to the height of the naves, the carved stone and the elegant atmosphere. But without a doubt, one of its greatest charms was the access to the roof, where we were able to enjoy beautiful views of the city.

En el exterior, pudimos ver su peculiar cúpula principal, uno de los detalles que hace a esta catedral fácilmente reconocible y la convierte en uno de los grandes símbolos de la ciudad, además de ser considerada una joya de la arquitectura gótica.
On the outside, we could see its peculiar main dome, one of the details that makes this cathedral easily recognisable and makes it one of the great symbols of the city, as well as being considered a jewel of Gothic architecture.
💀 Capilla de Huesos:
Por fin, llegamos a uno de los lugares más famosos e impactantes de Évora, la Capilla de Huesos. La mayoría de los turistas que vienen de visita a la ciudad, lo hacen principalmente arrastrados por la curiosidad de conocer este rincón, así que en consecuencia suele estar abarrotado de personas, sobre todo en temporada alta.
💀 Chapel of Bones:
Finally, we arrive at one of the most famous and impressive places in Évora, the Chapel of Bones. Most of the tourists who come to visit the city do so mainly out of curiosity to see this place, so as a result it is usually crowded, especially in high season.
Se encuentra ubicada justo al lado de la Iglesia de San Francisco, y en este caso la entrada nos costó solo 4 euros. Y debo decirles que lo que se encuentra dentro, deja una impresión que jamás se puede olvidar.
It is located right next to the Church of San Francisco, and in this case the entrance cost us only 4 euros. And I must tell you that what you find inside leaves an impression you will never forget.
Para hacerlos entrar un poco en contexto, les cuento que, esta capilla fue construida en el Siglo XVII, bajo la visión de un fraile franciscano, que buscaba hacer a sus fieles reflexionar sobre lo efímero de la vida y el destino final de esta. Entonces decidió que sería construida nada más y nada menos, que por huesos humanos, con un diseño perfecto y extremadamente alineado. De ahí, proviene el porqué de la fama de este lugar.
To give you some context, I will tell you that this chapel was built in the 17th century, under the vision of a Franciscan friar, who wanted to make his faithful reflect on the ephemeral nature of life and its final destiny. He then decided that it would be built with nothing more and nothing less than human bones, with a perfect and extremely aligned design. This is the reason for the fame of this place.
Y si creíamos que con esto bastaba, ya desde su entrada nos recibió con una impresionante y contundente frase, que nos dejó un mensaje bien directo:
And if we thought that this was enough, he greeted us with an impressive and forceful phrase, which left us with a very direct message:
"Nosotros, los huesos que aquí estamos, por los vuestros esperamos".
"We, the bones that are here, for yours we wait".
🌺 Jardín Público
Al salir de la Capilla de Huesos, justo en frente a la iglesia de San Francisco, nos encontramos con el Jardín Público, un rincón que se nos presentaba refrescante y tranquilo. En este espacio decidimos reposar un poco, después de la intensa experiencia anteriormente mencionada.
🌺 Public Garden
On leaving the Chapel of Bones, just in front of the church of San Francisco, we came across the Public Garden, a refreshing and peaceful spot. In this space we decided to rest for a while, after the intense experience mentioned above.
Uno de los elementos que más llamó nuestra atención, fueron las ruinas que adornaban el entorno, y le daban un aspecto vintage y muy romántico, el cual fue creado con toda la intención, ya que pudimos notar que dichas ruinas, son ficticias.
One of the elements that most caught our attention were the ruins that adorned the environment, giving it a vintage and very romantic look, which was created with full intention, as we could notice that these ruins are fictitious.
El jardín albergaba también una pequeña y colorida comunidad de pavos reales. Aunque intentamos fotografiarlos, en esta oportunidad, fueron esquivos, así que decidimos dejarlo para otra ocasión. Y proseguimos nuestro camino hacia el hotel, porque era tarde y como nada es eterno, nuestro viaje de regreso ya nos estaba esperando.
The garden was also home to a small and colourful community of peacocks. Although we tried to photograph them, this time they were elusive, so we decided to leave it for another time. And we continued on our way back to the hotel, because it was late and as nothing lasts forever, our return journey was already waiting for us.
