When I first heard about the place name, I chuckled a little bit but apparently That Dam in Lao means black stupa. The location of the stupa is at the roundabout where there are liquor shops and some heritage buildings surrounding it. I was on my way to Cope Center when I stumbled upon this That Dam. When I was there, there was a few locals doing some rituals and dancing. I don't know exactly what it was called but considering that it seems sacred, I didn't really bother to ask and was just enjoying the dance and the rituals that they were performing in the heat of Laos.
There's not much to be seen in this place but if you're into history, it's one of important landmark in Vientiane that you can check out. There are mythology surrounding the compound but as you can see above, the landmark could have been better if there was more sign that explained about it. When you're in vientiane, you'd certainly pass this place especially if you're planning to go to Talad Sao or any other landmark in Vientiane. So, while you're exploring the city, do not forget to pass this small landmark and walk circling it.
