When the travel bug bites and they are biting everywhere. The only thing you can relief the itch, is grab your bag and just go.
The 6 hours is a travelogue where I documented places I visited under 6 hours. These places are something new that I haven’t visited before. So, I am going to take you to explore these places with me.
It has been just two days since my cousins left the province. We visited several places under 7 hours that was documented in 6 hours series The 6 Hours : From Mysterious Temple To 0 Kilometers With Itineraries. I could not sleep after they left and was constantly thinking where to go next and where I could have my adventure. My mom told me that I need to stay still for a while but I just couldn’t, all I wanted was to grab my backpack and go. So, that night before I ventured into another 6 hours, I browsed places to go. I wanted to take macro shots and flower pictures but upon arriving the place it was closed. So, I decided to go to this beach called “ Pantai Glagah”.
This time, the 6 hours will contain 2 series of posts. The first one is detailing my visit to the beach and the second one will contain some locations that I have not yet visited before including a cave, a mini hollywood, a reservoir and a chocolate factory. Will there be a willy wonka? Stay tuned!
The location
Glagah beach is located 45 minutes away from Yogyakarta and is located at Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta Indonesia. This beach is also 10 minutes away from Yogyakarta's new international airport. So, if you ever land in Yogyakarta via NYIA (New Yogyakarta Airport) and during the day, you can book a grab car to visit this beach. If you are visiting from the town, the access to this beach is quite good but can be congested at times. So, there’s no worry about the access, this beach is pretty accessible and it is definitely worth visiting and I will tell you why!
Inside Pantai Glagah
Upon reaching the parking lot, you will still have to walk about more than 5 minutes to reach the main beach. On the way there, I saw some boats that were parked.
Apparently, you can take a boat ride across the mangrove that’s located nearby the parking lot. After taking some pictures around the area, I saw plenty of kiddie pools around with freshwater where kids could swim as in this beach, people are not allowed to swim.
Another thing that piqued my interest is also the food sellers. Along the way, there are food sellers selling seafood. I can identify some of them but there’s one that was quite surprising to me. But before that, I walked towards the wave breakers, the main attraction of this beach.
Pantai Glagah is the only beach in Yogyakarta that has the wave breakers. We can walk towards the middle of the ocean and enjoy the wind and the vastness of the ocean. You can leisurely stroll through this place and rejuvenate. While I was there, I was questioning my reasoning to travel. Most people go outside and to a nice place as a getaway from their mundane life. Why do I travel? It doesn’t seem like another getaway from me, my work is everywhere I go. Some people might think that this lifestyle is nice but sometimes I wish to be at an office as I’ve been doing this for years. But, I remind myself to be grateful that if this is the life I get to have, I should not be complaining.
While I was leisurely strolling and thinking, I saw some families were having fun around the area. They got down to the beach and some tried taking selfies with the wave breakers. When I pointed my camera, some of them tried to pose in front of it and I just smiled. There were some fishermen boats parked too and I tried to get close but the sand was too thick and it was quite heavy for me to walk around. So, I decided to leave the place as the sun was above me and I felt my skin was burning. But before I move on to another story, I want to show you pictures from the area.
My First Time Eating Sand Fleas
On my walk back, only then I visited the seafood stalls around this area. In this place, the seafood is fresh and sold at a cheaper price. You can also find seaweed crisp and even battered shrimp. But the most intriguing one is the sand crab.
I have never tasted sand crab before and I didn’t know it was sand crab. I thought it was tiny crab legs. So, I bought it for 5.000 IDR and was happy about it since I like crabs. But, the seller explained to another buyer that it was an animal called “ Undur-undur laut” . I was like, “wtf”.....
I had a moment of silence when I knew it wasn’t a crab. But since I already bought it, I had to eat it. They tasted quite crunchy and were actually okay until I saw the picture online and that moment I knew, I am not gonna eat them anymore. They look like a bug with hard shells. And well, that is because their phylum is also arthropod. They are known as Hippoidea. Dare to eat them?
Usually, I would have quite a reaction to strange food and seafood. But after eating that, I was surprisingly fine. I didn’t have any reaction. I was just weirded out that I was eating sand fleas.
I looked at my watch and apparently, I have spent about an hour in this place. So, I decided to go to the next destination which I picked randomly. I ended up visiting these cave springs that didn’t even have a cave at all. So, stay tuned to read about my following adventure!
