The dream of seeing the ocean brought me to Arcachon - the expectation of something powerful, different, new. Arcachon Bay turned out to be completely different, but quiet, warm, but no less attractive, and most importantly - alive!
Arcachon itself simply enchanted me. An unusual city, so unlike others that it is difficult to compare it with anything. Calm and quiet, simple and unpretentious seaside town.
Arcachon is a climatic resort on the Silver Coast of France. Beautiful white sand beaches stretch for 5 kilometers here, along them - Summer City - with many hotels.
It would seem impossible to imagine a seaside resort without the hubbub of visiting crowds, the bustle of vacationers, but in Arcachon there is none of this. The embankment is almost empty with the rare exception of locals or random tourists strolling.
There are pine trees all around. The coast is mostly covered with pine forests, the air is fresh and resinous. Having settled on the ocean shore, in addition to all the splendor, you get the long-awaited sea aroma.
It is not for nothing that Arcachon has earned the fame of the world's oyster capital - the oysters that are bred here and the shrimp in the local restaurants are excellent - it is impossible to eat anything else in this place. Recommending restaurants is a thankless task, so I will not do it.
Arcachon is located at the foot of a low hill, which is all built up with summer houses and villas - this is the Winter City. The winter city is one of the most popular areas of Arcachon, rich in historic villas of the nineteenth century. Attracting crowned heads from all over Europe, the winter city developed rapidly, unlike the summer city.
The places turned out to be wonderful: winding, slightly hilly green streets with many diverse, but still more or less consistent in the same, difficult-to-describe style of houses. Here you can see the overhanging roofs of Swiss chalets, and brick facades, and bay windows, and belvederes, and turrets, and verandas. A feeling of peace and tranquility, ideal weather, an old observation tower with an iron creaking spiral staircase, a small bridge...
This charming area was built in the early 1860s by two brothers - wealthy bankers and owners of a railway company from Bordeaux. They used to rent houses out to people who had lung problems or tuberculosis. That's why the quarter is not located by the sea, but on the hills, winding streets and pine trees were supposed to dampen the gusts of the damp sea wind.
The people around are the kindest and simplest - the atmosphere has a positive effect on them. I understand Napoleon III was in love with these places as there is not a hint of pathos - modest streets are crowned by the same, not flashy, but extremely attractive Notre Dame with the sailors' chapel. We did not meet a single soul in the cathedral, but it's such a peaceful peace.
Having photographed these villas, each of which has its own name, and some even have memorial plaques, we went swimming. It is not a short walk to a good sandy beach - about 30 minutes. Perhaps that is why the city is full of cyclists. Everyone rides - both old and young; the paths along the sea are even marked into two lanes.
The city beach disappointed me: a narrow strip of fine sand and piers from which pleasure boats constantly depart. There is practically nowhere to swim - boats everywhere. If you walk along the coast to the right, you will see a yacht parking, a fishing port, in short, endless boats. Later, looking at the map with a fresh mind, we realized that we needed to go to the left. There are good wide beaches and pine trees.
Finally, we could swam in the ocean and the feeling was magical! The waves were so strong there that swimmers flew head over heels to the shore. Here, of course, you have to forget about your hair, be ready to sprawl on the sand and swallow water and sand - but all this is trifles compared to the delight of rushing along with the huge mass of the wave, like a feather. Vigilant lifeguards sit on towers everywhere and quickly react to any emergency situations.
But, it must be said, in our sea it does not even occur to anyone to climb into such waves, and where there is control, there would already be a storm warning posted, and swimming would be prohibited.
Here, such powerful waves are commonplace. Those who are more careful stand almost knee-deep in water, this is enough to get doused from head to toe; those who are braver go deeper to ride with the wind. Since the bottom is sandy, the shore is flat and wide, there is practically no risk of injury. This resort is almost entirely French, there are very few foreigners, and the locals speak English, not all of them, and with difficulty.
Every morning in Arcachon begins with the market, where it is simply a paradise for gourmets and seafood lovers: all kinds of fish, shrimp, crabs, lobsters, several types of shellfish and, of course, oysters of all sizes.
Yes, I would like to stay and live here in my old age - just like the local old men who rush to the ocean in the morning, just like the youths who ride their bikes all over the town. And just live with a smile on my face in the mild winter and not hot summer.
