Years ago, after spending a few weeks in the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece, a trip out to the island of Lesvos started in the harbor at Pireaus boarding an overnight ferry for the 11 1/2 hour trip. The ferries are huge and can carry over 1000 people and hundreds of vehicles. Watching one being unloaded and then loaded up again is pretty amazing.
Having a private cabin made the trip relatively painless.
Once on the island we picked up the rental car in Mitilini and drove to Skala Eressou to make the beach our home base for the week. It is the birthplace of the poetess Sappho, born in 615 BC.
This was long before the island of Lesvos became a holding station for refugees from the Middle East and Africa seeking asylum in the European Union. I would imagine the island looks a bit different after 1000s of people have landed on their shores.
Skala Eressos has one of the most dramatic sandy beaches in all of Greece.
There is a line of cafes and restaurants on the waterfront, including some traditional fish tavernas.
Fish doesn't get much fresher and then grilled over an outdoor wood fire made it absolutely perfect!
A week on the island was not nearly enough time to throughly explore everything. Here are a few more sights seen around the village
I was impressed by the size of those olive oil cans the geraniums were planted in!
