Maybe my wife was feeling a bit nostalgic these days, because she remembered that we could have gone on a trip to the Arboretum Volcji Potok. I say that because she remembered that she was visiting this botanical garden in her childhood. It was in April, when the tulips were in bloom. And what a strange coincidence that she remembered it on those days (when the tulips are in bloom π). The spring weather was nice, sunny but not to hot, and we decided to make our day trip to the park.
The Arboretum VolΔji Potok is the most visited botanical park in Slovenia, that was established in 1952 by University of Ljubljana. It is located about 20 km north from Ljubljana. I read that the garden extends on 85 hectares and is home to 4.800 trees, 1.000 rose varieties and 2.000.000 tulips. I guess each one represents one Slovenian inhabitant π.
We were lucky enough to have two exhibitions in the park at the same time, Giants of the Sea and Dinosaurs. I was not thrilled by the idea of βflowers watchingβ but I was pleasantly surprised by the spacious park, which is really well maintained. A great synergy of gravel paths, flower beds, trees and forest combined with wet meadows.
Honestly each one of us found something interesting in the park,β¦My wife was admiring the vivid flowers, the clear sky and the romantic atmosphere (as she said), the youngest one was attracted by the whale and dinosaur sculptures and nice playgrounds, while me.. well I had some time to take some new photos. The light was perfect, the sky was blue and the flowers were really glowing in vivid colours.
Iβm not sure if we spent more time watching the flowers, the whales or the dinosaurs. The statues are life-size and really impressive. I knew that our son likes dinosaurs, but when he started to explain every detail about each creature, I was not sure anymore if he knew all those things or he was inviting them on the spot π. I must admit that I didnβt remember much of his explanations, I got lost already with the namesβ¦
The botanical garden attracts visitors all year round. In March the spring arrives and the park is full of yellow daffodils.
The most famous attraction is the spring flower shows β in April, when the tulips (and other flowers) are in full swing.
May is the right month to visit the English parks with mighty rhododendrons are evergreen plants. June is the time when over 1.000 varieties of roses shine in their fragility and beauty. In July and August the central role is played by the perennials and the dahlias.
It was a really nice day spent in fresh air, but most of all it was another day of quality time spent with my loved onesπ.
