Visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Solo

I just got back from Solo and I really have to share my experience of stepping foot in the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque for the first time. You've probably seen it on social media, right? Its incredibly magnificent, pure white photos look like they’re not even in Indonesia.

My first impression when I saw the mosque filled me completely! From a far, the white domes with their gold accents stood out. In Solo, they stood in contrast to the other buildings there. “Masya Allah...” was even all that I could say, as soon as I walked closer up to the main gate, and then arrived at the parking area.

Truly, Solo felt like a place I did not fit. The building was truly magnificent for its pure white color. The bright sun made the color glow. Every detail was exquisitely delicate and also beautiful, from the calligraphy to the polished marble floors and to giant pillars. Simultaneously, it felt majestic also peaceful.

The daytime in Solo is indeed hot.!! As I stepped inside of the mosque, an instant cool feeling arose. The air and the marble floor felt extremely cold below. It was not simply due to just the air conditioning, however. It makes you desire for a longer stay.

Within, the atmosphere was incredibly serene. Everyone knew that they must maintain their composure, despite the crowds being there. So thick and soft was the carpet, it made me want to prostrate myself during a long time. As I did look up, the giant golden chandelier captured everyone's attention, even including mine. It was luxurious, never tacky at all though.

My favorite place is the central courtyard. Surrounded by majestic pillars, with the blue Solo sky as its roof. Standing in the middle there really makes you feel small in the face of His magnificent creation. Every corner is incredibly Instagrammable, to be honest. But more than just taking pictures, this place truly has a "soul" that brings peace to the heart.

Some Tips If You Want to Visit:

I recommend coming in the late afternoon around 3:30-4:00 PM. You’ll get great lighting for photos, then do the Ashar prayer, and wait for the sunset. I heard the view at night, when all the lights are on is amazing! The atmosphere is totally different.
Avoid weekends if you don't like crowds.. Try to come on weekdays.
Bring a plastic bag with you. You need to take off your shoes before entering. Although there are lockers available, bringing a plastic bag for your sandals/shoes is more practical so you don’t have to wait in line.
Please behave yourself when you come here. This is a mosque, so please remain calm, don't shout or run around, and dress appropriately.

Conclusion

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Solo absolutely worth to visit.! It’s not just about the grand building for photos, but also a calming spiritual experience. An architectural gift and beauty that we can now enjoy in the heart of Solo.

If you’re in Solo or planning to go there, you absolutely must include this mosque in your itinerary. You won’t regret it!
