Katarmal Sun Temple is the oldest Sun Temple in India and is located in a village named Adheli Sunar in Almora district in the state of Uttarakhand. It was built by the then ruler of Katarmal of the Katyuri dynasty from the sixth century AD. It was built in the ninth century. It is one of the largest and tallest temples of Kumaon and is an unmatched example of extraordinary architecture and craftsmanship in North India and is situated on a mountain at a height of about 1350 meters above sea level. This temple of Sun God is the second largest temple in India. The first largest temple is the Sun Temple of Konark in Odisha. Every year lakhs of tourists visit here. It is said that there was terror of a demon named Kalanemi here, so the people here invoked Lord Surya. Lord Surya resided in the banyan tree to protect the people. Since then he is also known here as Bad Aditya.
There are a total of 45 temples in this temple, big and small. Earlier, idols were kept in these temples, which are now kept in the sanctum sanctorum. It is said that many years ago there was a theft in the temple, due to which all the idols are now kept in the sanctum sanctorum. Sandalwood is used in this temple There used to be a wooden door, which is kept in the Delhi Museum. In this temple, the rays of the sun fall on the idol of the Lord twice a year. This can be seen in the morning on 22 October and 22 February. Thousands of devotees visit this temple every month.
