Some weeks end in a special way, like this one. After living many years in the same city, it’s incredible how you can still discover new experiences even in places you’ve walked through time and time again. Today, I decided to end this late Friday evening in the bustling solitude of one of Cuba’s urban parks: the Casino Campestre.
Located in Camagüey, it is a true historical and cultural treasure, not just a space for leisure and recreation, but also an open-air museum, where numerous monuments and statues stand in honor of national heroes, historical figures, and significant events in Cuban history.
Upon arriving and walking along the park’s paths, I encountered one of the most striking figures, the heart of this place: the Monument to the Unknown Liberator (or the Unknown Soldier). The bronze statue rises with serene solemnity. Its figure, weathered by time yet eternal in its nobility, seems to whisper tales of courage and sacrifice as the evening light caresses its silhouette, casting a long shadow over the grass like a protective arm.
Every detail, from the anonymous face to the firm stance, invites reflection, a reminder of nameless heroes whose legacy lingers in the whisper of the wind and the peace of this place.
Further on, a man raises his arm toward the sky. It is the illustrious Manuel Ramón Silva, to whom the city council erected this statue in 1921. Since then, his lifeless posture has stood beneath the casuarinas and melinas that fill the park.
Perhaps the very center of the park is the statue of Salvador Cisneros Betancourt, presiding over the Casino Campestre. Seated on a throne with solemn dignity, above him stands a nude woman, her delicate yet strong lines rising victoriously over a prostrate human figure, a symbol of freedom triumphing over oppression. The contrast between the solemnity of the patriot and the allegorical intensity of the pinnacle creates a powerful visual dialogue. Bathed in sunlight, the ensemble evokes history and triumph amid the park’s greenery.
After continuing my walk, umbrella resting on my shoulder, I found the sober bust of Gonzalo de Quesada, the favorite disciple of our national apostle, José Martí, to whom Cuba owes much of the compilation of Martí’s works. Serene and watchful under the relentless August sun, his bronze gaze meets ours.
Nearby stands an obelisk in honor of Camagüey’s beloved teacher, Luis Miguel de Varona. Shaped like a needle, it seems to pierce the clouds gathering one by one over the city’s sky.
One of the most moving moments of my visit was standing before the monument commemorating the tragic flight of Captains Mariano Barberán and Joaquín Collar aboard the Cuatro Vientos, a landmark in Spanish aviation that ended in tragedy. On June 10, 1933, they took off from Seville, Spain, bound for Havana, successfully crossing the Atlantic in a record nonstop flight. However, after landing in Cuba and continuing their journey to Mexico, they disappeared.
I ended my walk with two busts that stand along the evening promenade, bronze tributes to two heroes who chose to rest for eternity in this place.
In this park where children play, lovers share their first kiss, and poetry tastes of leaves and wind, the statues sleep the eternal slumber of bronze, stirring the souls of all who pass by them day after day. Today, I returned home with an unusual tremor, perhaps from so many presences and gazes.

Un parque donde las estatuas duermen
Hay semanas que terminan de manera especial, como esta. Después de vivir muchos años en la misma ciudad, resulta increíble cómo logras descubrir nuevas experiencias incluso en los lugares por los que has caminado una y otra vez. Hoy he decidido terminar este viernes tarde bajo la soledad tan concurrida que ofrece uno de los parques urbanos de mi país, Cuba: el Casino Campestre.
Ubicado en Camagüey, es un verdadero tesoro histórico y cultural. No solo es un espacio de esparcimiento y recreación, sino también un auténtico museo al aire libre, donde se erigen numerosos monumentos y estatuas dedicados a héroes nacionales, figuras históricas y eventos relevantes de Cuba.
Al llegar al lugar y comenzar a recorrer los senderos del parque, me encuentro con una de las figuras más sobrecogedoras, uno de los corazones del lugar: el monumento al Libertador Desconocido (o, como también se le conoce, al Soldado Desconocido). La estatua de bronce se alza con serena solemnidad. Su figura, desgastada por el tiempo pero eterna en su nobleza, parece susurrar historias de valor y sacrificio mientras la luz del atardecer acaricia su silueta, proyectando una sombra alargada sobre el césped, como un brazo protector.
Cada detalle, desde el rostro anónimo hasta la postura firme, invita a la reflexión. Es un recordatorio de héroes sin nombre, cuyo legado perdura en el susurro del viento y la paz del lugar.
Más adelante, un hombre alza su brazo hacia el cielo. Se trata del ilustre Manuel Ramón Silva, a quien el ayuntamiento erigió esta estatua en 1921. Desde entonces, su postura inerte se mantiene bajo las casuarinas y melinas que abundan en el parque.
Quizás el centro mismo del parque sea la estatua de Salvador Cisneros Betancourt, presidiendo el Casino Campestre. Sentado en un trono con aire solemne, sobre él se alza una mujer desnuda, de líneas delicadas pero fuertes, victoriosa sobre una figura humana postrada, como símbolo de la libertad sobre la opresión. El contraste entre la solemnidad del prócer y la intensidad alegórica de la cúspide crea un diálogo visual poderoso. El conjunto, bañado por la luz del sol, evoca historia y triunfo en medio del verdor del parque.
Después de seguir caminando, con sombrilla al hombro, encuentro el sobrio busto de Gonzalo de Quesada, quien fuera el discípulo predilecto de nuestro Apóstol Nacional, José Martí, y a quien Cuba le debe parte de la recopilación de su obra. Sereno y vigilante, bajo el inclemente sol de agosto, nos lanza su mirada de bronce.
Muy cerca se alza un obelisco en honor a quien fuera el maestro predilecto de Camagüey: Luis Miguel de Varona. En forma de aguja, parece querer enhebrar las nubes que se agolpan una a una sobre el cielo de la ciudad.
Uno de los momentos más emocionantes del recorrido es estar frente al monumento al vuelo accidentado de los capitanes Mariano Barberán y Joaquín Collar a bordo del avión Cuatro Vientos, un hito de la aviación española que terminó en tragedia. El 10 de junio de 1933, despegaron desde Sevilla, España, con destino a La Habana, logrando cruzar el Atlántico sin escalas en un vuelo récord. Sin embargo, tras aterrizar en Cuba y continuar su viaje a México, desaparecieron.
Cierro mi recorrido con dos bustos que se erigen en el paseo vespertino: bustos de bronce de dos héroes que eligieron dormir la eternidad en este lugar.
En este parque donde los niños juegan, los enamorados dan su primer beso y donde la poesía tiene el sabor de las hojas y el viento, las estatuas duermen el sueño eterno del bronce y logran conmover el alma de todos los que a su lado pasan día a día. Hoy he llegado a casa con un temblor inusual. Quizás sea el de tantas presencias y miradas.
