Although Edinburgh is situated in a bay by the North Sea, it is a very mountainous city. Even the shortest contact with Edinburgh shows that there are at least 3 hills in the city. The hill on which Edinburgh Castle is located, a very attractive hill called Arthur's Seat, and Calton Hill, which is densely built with various attractions, which will be the main topic of this text.
Calton Hill, located near the New Town of Edinburgh, and due to the characteristic buildings, the hill is called the Acropolis of the North. The main building of the acropolis, reminiscent of the Greek temples of the Parthenon, is the National Monument of Scotland dedicated to the Scottish soldiers and sailors who died in the Napoleonic Wars. According to the inscription, it was to be "A memorial of the past and an encouragement to the future heroism of the men of Scotland". This building was planned and designed as a national mausoleum for the most eminent Scots, but as it turned out, the costs of the building far exceeded the possibilities of the Scottish budget. Thus, the construction started in 1823 was never completed. The building reached its present shape in 1829 and has been unfinished for almost 200 years, although the inhabitants of Edinburgh had various ideas about what functions this building could take. The statue of Queen Victoria, the monument commemorating the 1707 Act of Union with England, the new Scottish National Gallery or the building of the Scottish Parliament were all beautiful ideas, but unfortunately they were never implemented. Mischievous Scots nickname the monument such as "Edinburgh's Disgrace", "Scotland's Pride and Poverty" and "Edinburgh's Folly".

Edynburg mimo, że położony jest w zatoce nad morzem północnym jest bardzo górzystym miastem. Nawet najkrótsza styczność z Edynburgiem pozwala się zorientować, że w mieście są przynajmniej 3 wzgórza. Wzgórze na której zlokalizowany jest edynburski zamek, bardzo atrakcyjne wzgórze zwane Arthur's Seat, oraz gęsto zabudowane różnymi atrakcjami wzgórze Calton Hill, które będzie głównym tematem tego tekstu.
Wzgórze Calton Hill znajdujące nieopodal Nowego Miasta w Edynburgu, a ze względu na charakterystyczną zabudowę wzgórze nazywane jest Akropolem Północy. Główną budowlą akropolu przypominającą grecką świątynie Partenon to National Monument of Scotland poświęcony szkockim żołnierzom i marynarzom, którzy zginęli w wojnach napoleońskich. Zgodnie z inskrypcją miał być „Pamiątką przeszłości i zachętą do przyszłego heroizmu mężczyzn ze Szkocji”. Budowla ta była zaplanowana i zaprojektowana jako narodowe mauzoleum dla najwybitniejszych szkotów, jednak jak się okazało koszty budowli znacznie przewyższyły możliwości szkockiego budżetu. Tak więc rozpoczętą w roku 1823 budowę nigdy nie zakończono. Obecny kształt budowla osiągnęła w roku 1829 i już niemal od 200 lat stoi niedokończona, choć mieszkańcom Edynburga przychodziły różne pomysły na to jakie funkcje mogłaby przybrać ta budowla. Pomnik królowej Wiktorii, pomnik upamiętniający akt unii z Anglią z 1707 r., nowa Szkocka Galeria Narodowa czy budynek Parlamentu Szkockiego to były piękne pomysły, ale niestety nigdy nie zostały zrealizowane. Złośliwi Szkoci przezywają pomnik przydomkami takimi jak „hańba Edynburga”, „duma i ubóstwo Szkocji” oraz „Szaleństwo Edynburga”.

Another interesting building located on Calton Hill is the municipal astronomical observatory. The observatory in its eastern wing is equipped with a built-in transit telescope. Interestingly, the building was closed to mere mortals until 2018 and was used only for teaching and research purposes. Only in the last 4 years the observatory has been transformed into a museum and made available to the general public for all interested. It is worth noting that the entrance to this museum is completely free, but I will not hide that the museum does not have much to offer visitors.

Kolejnym ciekawym budynkiem znajdującym się na Calton Hill to miejskie obserwatorium astronomiczne. Obserwatorium we swoim wschodnim skrzydle wyposażone jest w wbudowany teleskop tranzytowy. Co ciekawe budynek aż do roku 2018 był zamknięty dla zwykłych śmiertelników i służył wyłącznie do celów dydaktycznych i naukowych. Dopiero od ostatnich 4 lat obserwatorium zostało przekształcone w muzeum i udostępnione do ogólnego zwiedzania dla wszystkich chętnych. Warto zaznaczyć, że wejście do tego muzeum jest całkowicie darmowe, ale też nie będę ukrywał, że nie za wiele to muzeum może zaoferować zwiedzającym.

Najbardziej wysuniętym na zachód elementem znajdującym się na wzgórzu Calton Hill jest pomnik szkockiego filozofa I profesora filozofii moralnej na edynburskim uniwersytecie Dugalda Stewarta. Pomnik wzniesiono we wrześniu 1831 roku, a jego forma nawiązuje do kształtu pomniku Lizykratesa który od IV wieku przed naszą erą stoi w Atenach. That this was an extremely important battle for the British, there is no need to remind anyone, it is enough to mention that every year on the anniversary of the battle, Trafalgar Day is celebrated. On this day, the white ensign of the Royal Navy and signal flags bearing Nelson's famous message "England expects every man to do his duty" are flown from the top of the memorial tower.
