Edinburgh is a city located on the hills, which quite successfully resisted the development of the city and were not built up by this long history of the city. The exception is only one hill, which is currently surrounded by the city. The extinct rocky volcano measuring 120 meters high is now called the castle hill, thanks to the fact that the first fortifications were erected on its top in the 9th century BC. Of course, the buildings from those times have not survived to this day, and the current defensive walls come from the 16th century and must be admitted that they are monumental. It is the most powerful Scottish fortress, which for centuries served as the seat of Scottish kings. The oldest surviving elements of the castle are the 12th-century Chapel of St. Małgorzata which is also the oldest building in the whole city. Other places worth visiting in the castle are the great hall used for important royal ceremonies, the National War Museum, the castle prison and the treasury.

Edynburg to miasto położone na wzgórzach, które dosyć skutecznie oparały się rozwojowi miasta i nie zostały zabudowane przez tą wieloletnią historię miasta. Wyjątek stanowi tylko jedno wzgórze, które obecnie jest wręcz otoczone miastem. Wygasły skalisty wulkan mierzący 120 metrów wysokości obecnie nazywany jest wzgórzem zamkowym, a to dzięki temu, że na jego szczycie w IX wieku przed nasza era wzniesiono pierwszą fortyfikacje. Oczywiście, że budowle z tamtych czasów nie przetrwały do dzisiaj, a obecne mury obronne pochodzą z XVI wieku i trzeba przyznać, że są monumentalne. Jest to najpotężniejsza szkocka twierdza, która przez wieki pełniła rolę siedziby szkockich królów. Najstarszym zachowanym do dzisiaj elementów zamku jest XII-wieczna Kaplica św. Małgorzaty która jednocześnie jest najstarsza budowla w całym mieście. Innymi miejscami, które warto odwiedzić na zamku to wielka aula służąca wykorzystywana podczas ważnych ceremonii królewskich, Narodowe Muzeum Wojny, zamkowe więzienie i skarbiec.

Unfortunately, we were a bit unlucky, because a few days before our arrival in Edinburgh, some big event must have been taking place at the castle, so there were remnants of steel scaffolding in the castle courtyard, forming temporary stands. I have not found any information about what event took place in the castle, I can only assume in the romantic version that there was a knight tournament there or in the more realistic version that some concert, theatrical performance or state celebrations. However, whatever it was, it left a huge mess behind. The mass of trucks, the mass of loaders, crowds of workers bustling with disassembly, a huge number of all kinds of steel pipes, rods, wooden seats, concrete weights and all kinds of other elements filled the entire castle courtyard. We decided not to go there any longer, and instead take a leisurely walk around the castle hill and see what the castle looks like from all over the world, and we must admit that it was a hit! Anyone who has been to Edinburgh has certainly had the opportunity to see what the castle looks like from the perspective of Princes Street, but in my opinion the view from King's Stables Rd is much, much better. Looking at the fortress from the south, one has the impression that the castle and this volcanic rock are one and the walls have been carved out of the rock. A truly impressive sight!

Niestety mieliśmy trochę pecha, bo na kilka dni przed naszym przyjazdem do Edynburga na zamku musiało odbywać się jakieś wielkie wydarzenie, w związku z czym na zamkowym dziedzińcu porozkładane były pozostałości z stalowego rusztowania tworzące tymczasowe trybuny. Nie znalazłem nigdzie informacji co to za wydarzenie odbywało się na zamku, mogę tylko przypuszczać w wersji romantycznej, że był tam jakiś turniej rycerski lub w wersji bardziej realistycznej że jakiś koncert, przedstawienie teatralne, lub uroczystości państwowe. Niemniej jednak co by to nie było, pozostawiło po sobie ogromny bałagan. Masa samochodów ciężarowych, masa ładowarek, tłumy pracowników uwijających z demontażem, ogromna liczba wszelkiego rodzaj stalowych rur, prętów, drewnianych siedzisk, obciążników betonowych i wszelkiego innego rodzaju elementów zasypały cały dziedziniec zamkowy. Postanowiliśmy nie chodzić tam dłużej, a zamiast tego zrobić sobie spokojny spacer dookoła wzgórza zamkowego i zobaczyć jak wygląda zamek ze wszystkich stron świata i trzeba przyznać, że był to strzał w dziesiątkę! Każdy kto był w Edynburgu na pewno miał okazję zobaczyć jak wygląda zamek z perspektywy ulicy Princes Street, ale w mojej ocenie widok z ulicy King's Stables Rd jest dużo, dużo lepszy. Patrząc na twierdzę od południowej strony ma się wrażenie, że zamek i ta wulkaniczna skała stanowią jedność i mury zostały wręcz wykute w skale. Zaprawdę imponujący widok!
