As I mentioned in one of the previous entries, the place where we stayed for the night in Rome forced us to go through the Vatican and St. Paul. Later we had to cross the entire representative street Via della Conciliazione and later, after crossing the Tiber River, we were already in the thick tangle of ancient Roman streets. The fastest crossing of the river was provided by the Ponte Vittorio Eemanuele II bridge, but we preferred to choose a different, slightly longer, but much more interesting route.

Jak już wspomniałem w jednym z poprzednich wpisów, miejsce w którym zatrzymaliśmy się na nocleg w Rzymie wymuszało na nas abyśmy idąc do centrum miasta każdego dnia przechodzili przez Watykan i plac św. Pawła. Później musieliśmy przejść całą reprezentatywną ulice Via della Conciliazione i później po przekroczeniu rzeki Tyber byliśmy już w gęstej plątaninie starożytnych rzymskich uliczek. Najszybsze przejście przez rzekę zapewniał nam most Ponte Vittorio Eemanuele II, my jednak woleliśmy wybierać inną, trochę dłuższą, ale za to dużo ciekawszą drogę.

It led through the ancient five-span St. Angel. It was built by Emperor Hadrian in AD 134 as a gateway to the mausoleum that the emperor was building for himself and his family. At that time, the bridge was called the Hadrian's Bridge and was a three-span structure with a width of 10.5 meters and the span of each span of about 18 meters. At the end of the 6th century, Pope Gregory I the Great appeared over Hadrian's mausoleum, which was the reason to change the names of the pair of buildings to the castle of St. Angel and St. Angel. Over the years, the decorations on the bridge have been changed many times. In the 16th century, sculptures of St. Peter and St. Paul (they still stand there today) and the sculptures of twelve patriarchs who, after a hundred years, were replaced by statues of angels commissioned by Pope Clement IX. These 10 figures created by Bernini and his team of artists are for pilgrims going to the Vatican a kind of reminder of the Way of the Cross that Jesus Christ took, because each of the angels holds the symbols of the Lord's Passion in their hands.
