For the second part of our Bosnia and Herzegovina trip, we left Sarajevo early in the morning and set our route to Mostar. The train ride took about two and a half hours, and watching the scenery pass by through the window was mesmerizing. My friend Merve were with me. A quiet yet meaningful day awaited us.
Bosna-Hersek seyahatimizin ikinci bölümü için Saraybosna’dan sabah erkenden yola çıkıp, rotamızı Mostar’a çevirdik. Yaklaşık iki buçuk saatlik tren yolculuğu boyunca camdan dışarıyı izlemek, dağların arasından geçen yolları takip etmek büyüleyiciydi. Yanımda arkadaşım Merve vardı. Sessiz ama anlam dolu bir gün bizi bekliyordu.
Arrival in Mostar
As we stepped off at Mostar’s small station, the silence of the town immediately embraced us. On our walk from the station to our house that we rent from airbnb, we barely spoke. Maybe it was the morning breeze, or maybe the town was whispering to us. Our first stop, naturally, was the famous Mostar Bridge.
Mostar’a Varış
Mostar‚ın minik istasyonunda indikten sonra, şehrin sessizliği bizi hemen karşılayıverdi. Tren istasyonundan airbnb’den kiraladığımız evimize doğru yürürken neredeyse hiç konuşmadık. Belki sabahın serinliği, belki şehrin bize fısıldadığı bir his vardı. İlk durağımız, tabii ki meşhur Mostar Köprüsü oldu.
The bridge, which I had admired in photos, was even more impressive in person. The turquoise Neretva River flowing beneath it created a painting-like scene. Standing in the middle of the bridge, we took in the view and reflected on its history. Destroyed during the war in the 1990s and later rebuilt, this bridge stood as a symbol of resilience and hope.
Fotoğraflarda görüp hayran kaldığım köprü, gerçekte daha da etkileyiciydi. Altından akan turkuaz renkli Neretva Nehri, köprünün estetiğiyle adeta bir tablo oluşturuyordu. Köprünün ortasında durup hem manzarayı izledik hem de tarihîn izlerini düşünüdük. 1990’lardaki savaş sırasında yıkılıp sonra yeniden yapılan bu köprü, direnç ve umut sembolü gibiydi.
After visiting the bridge, our first task was breakfast. We ate coffee and freshly baked “sirnica,” a local cheese-filled pastry, at a cozy café. It was crispy on the outside and warm inside. The kajmak (clotted cream) served with it took the flavor to the next level. Prices were very affordable compared to Istanbul, and portions were generous.
Köprü sonrası ilk işimiz güzel bir kahvaltıydı. Yerel bir kafede kahve ve taze pişmiş börek yedik. Böreğin adı “sirnica”ydı, içi beyaz peynir dolu ve dışı çıtır çıtırdı. Yanında gelen kajmak (kaymak) ise lezzetin zirvesiydi. Fiyatlar İstanbul’a göre oldukça uygun ve porsiyonlar doyurucuydu.
As we wandered through the streets of Mostar, the silence was striking. There were no crowds, and barely any traffic. Most shops sold handmade crafts. The scars of history were visible in side streets — bullet marks on walls were a reminder that the war’s memory was still fresh.
Mostar sokaklarında yürürken dikkatimizi çeken şey sessizlik oldu. Kalabalık yoktu, trafik neredeyse hiç yoktu. Dükkanların çoğu küçük el işi ürünler satıyordu. Ara sokaklarda tarihin izleri vardı. Duvarlardaki kurşun izleri, savaşın hâlâ ne kadar taze olduğunu gösteriyordu.
In the evening, we walked along the river. The sunset reflecting over the bridge was mesmerizing. We sat at a nearby tea garden and watched the bridge in silence. In those moments, we felt like we were at the heart of Mostar. No words were needed.
Akşam saatlerinde nehir kenarında yürüyüş yaptık. Gün batımının köprü üzerine düşen yansıması büyüleyiciydi. Biraz ilerdeki çay bahçesinde oturup sessizce köprüyü izledik. O an Mostar’ın kalbinde olduğumuzu hissettik. O anlarda konuşmaya gerek yoktu.
The next morning, we left Mostar after a one-night stay. But we didn’t just take back photos — we carried emotional weight as well. The silence of Mostar was both peaceful and melancholic. It’s one of those rare places where you can feel history, war, resistance, and peace all at once.
Ertesi sabah, bir gece kaldığımız Mostar’dan ayrıldık. Fakat geride sadece fotoğraflar değil, duygusal bir yük de bıraktık. Mostar’ın sessizliği, hem huzur verici hem de hüzünlüydü. Tarihin, savaşın, direnişin ve barışın aynı anda hissedilebildiği nadir yerlerden biri.
For those planning to visit Mostar, I suggest going early in the morning and staying until sunset. Be sure to pause on the bridge and listen to the city’s breath. Try the local flavors and embrace the silence of the backstreets. If you can stay overnight, you’ll truly feel the soul of this town.
