Two years ago I was able to visit a town marked by the history of a great tragedy. It is the Tourist Village of Epecuén, so named because it was built on the shore of Lake Epecuén.
Unlike the previous time I went alone, this time I took my family with me so that they would not only get to know a truly beautiful place, but also to learn about its history and contribute to ensure that the voice of this town, so punished, would not be forgotten.
On this occasion we had a guided tour in which we were given valuable information about Epecuén, from its foundation, to its heyday, the activities that were carried out there, the causes and consequences of the flood and many other interesting facts that in a way makes us take dimension of the disaster that occurred there.
The talk was very interesting and of great value for all of us who were there listening attentively to every detail of the guide's account, who knew what happened because he had lived in the tourist village during the time of the flood.
Hace dos años pude ir a conocer un pueblo marcado por la historia de una gran tragedia. Se trata de la Villa Turística de Epecuén quien recibe ese nombre por haber sido construído sobre la costa del Lago Epecuén.
A diferencia de la vez anterior que fui solo, en esta oportunidad llevé a mi familia para que no solo conozca un lugar verdaderamente bello, sino también para que conozcan su historia y contribuir a que la voz de este pueblo tan castigado no quede en el olvido.
En esta ocasión tuvimos hicimos una visita guiada en la cual nos brindaron valiosa información sobre la Epecuén, desde su fundación, a su época de apogeo, las actividades que allí se realizaban, las causas y consecuencias de la inundación y muchos otros datos de interés que de cierto modo nos hace tomar dimensión del desastre allí ocurrido.
La charla fue muy interesante y de un gran valor para todos los que estábamos allí oyendo atentamente cada detalle del relato del guía, quien conocía lo sucedido por haber vivido en la villa turística en los tiempos de la inundación.
To put you in context about the history of the town and to help you understand what happened, I will start by telling you some details about Lake Epecuén so that you can understand how the events that ended with the flooding of a town came about.
Lake Epecuén is the last lake of a system of chained lagoons located in the southwest of the Province of Buenos Aires. Lake Epecuén has no way of draining its waters to other lake beds and the only way it loses water is through evaporation and soil absorption.
This basin or system of lagoons has the particularity that it is located in a depressed territory very close to Sierra de la Ventana, from which it receives the largest water supply.
Another of the particularities of the Epecuén Lagoon is that beyond being the last of the lagoons, it is the only one with salt water. The salinity, minerals and curative properties of the water of Epecuén Lagoon are comparable to those of the Black Sea. According to what the guide told us, the lake contains between 300 and 400 grams of salt per liter of water.
Now we go into the history that saw the emergence of what was once one of the main tourist destinations in the province of Buenos Aires.
Para ponerlos en contexto sobre la historia del pueblo y que puedan entender lo sucedido comenzaré por contarles algunas detalles del Lago Epecuén para que puedan comprender como se fueron dando los acontecimientos que terminaron con la inundación de un pueblo.
El lago Epecuén es la última lago de un sistema de lagunas encadenadas situadas en el sudoeste de la Provincia de Buenos Aires. El lago Epecuén no tiene manera de drenar sus aguas hacia otros lechos y la única forma que tiene de perder agua es la evaporación y la absorción del suelo.
Esta cuenca o sistema de Lagunas tiene la particularidad que están situadas en un territorio deprimido muy cercano a Sierra de la Ventana, de quien recibe el mayor aporte de agua.
Otra de las particularidades de la Laguna Epecuén es que más allá de ser la última de las lagunas, es la única de agua salada. La salinidad, los minerales y las propiedades curativas del agua de la laguna de Epecuén son comparables con las del Mar Negro. Por lo que nos comentaba la guía el lago contiene entre 300 y 400 gramos de sal por litro de agua.
Ahora sí nos adentramos en la historia que vio surgir a lo que alguna vez fue uno de los principales destinos turísticos de la provincia de Buenos Aires.
Already in the early twentieth century, it was known that the waters of Lake Epecuén were very rich in minerals and salts, so it was presumed that its waters had curative effects. At the same time that the place became known and began to be an attractive destination for thermal tourism, in parallel mining companies were dedicated to the exploitation of sodium sulfate which was used in the production of various industries.
The citizens and neighbors of the town of Carhué, which is only 7 kilometers from Epecuén, began to notice that the mining exploitation was not controlled and began to fear the environmental consequences that such exploitation could cause to the ecosystem, so they began to mobilize and took legal action to prevent the extractive activity until the necessary studies were done to determine the environmental impact of the mining activity.
By that time, several studies had already been completed that demonstrated the curative properties of the water of Lake Epecuén for rheumatic diseases, skin diseases such as psoriasis, among others, and respiratory diseases. Little by little, the creation of a true paradise of thermal tourism began to take shape, where the main attraction would be the curative properties of the water and its health benefits.
After years of claims and struggle on the part of the inhabitants of the sector, they achieved a judicial resolution that limited the amount of sodium sulfate to be extracted, which threatened the profitability of the industries that ended up closing their doors.
At the beginning of the 40's, the village began to have a great development and little by little the great investments in hotel infrastructure began, reaching a capacity to lodge 5000 people.
Ya a principios del siglo XX, se sabía que las aguas del Lago Epecuén eran muy ricas en minerales y sales, por lo cual se presumía que sus aguas tenían efectos curativos. Al tiempo que el lugar se hacía conocido y comenzaba a ser un destino atractivo para el turismo termal, en paralelo empresas mineras se dedicaban a la explotación de sulfato de sodio lo cual se utilizaba en la producción de varias industrias.
Los ciudadanos y vecinos del pueblo de Carhué, que solo está a 7 kilómetros de Epecuén comenzaron a advertir que la explotación minera no se la controlaba y comenzaron a temer por las consecuencias ambientales que dicha explotación podrían causar al ecosistema con lo cual, se comienzan a movilizar y se interponen medidas judiciales para impedir la actividad extractiva hasta tanto no se hagan los estudios necesarios para conocer cuál sería el impacto ambiental de la actividad minera.
Ya para ese entonces se había culminado varios estudios que demostraban las propiedades curativas del agua del Lago Epecuén para afecciones reumáticas, para enfermedades de la piel como la psoriasis, entre otras y afecciones respiratorias. Poco a poco se comenzaba a gestar la creación de un verdadero paraíso del turismo termal, donde el principal atractivo serían las propiedades curativas del agua y sus beneficios para la salud.
Luego de años de reclamos y de lucha por parte de los pobladores del sector logran una resolución judicial que limitaba la cantidad de sulfato de sodio a extraer lo cual atentó contra la rentabilidad de las industrias que terminaron por cerrar sus puertas.
Para principios de los años ´40 la Villa comienza a tener gran desarrollo y poco a poco comienzan las grandes inversiones en infraestructura hotelera, llegando a tener plazas para alojar a 5000 personas.
The years went by and what at the beginning was a small town grew by leaps and bounds.
From the 60's onwards it began to live its years of splendor receiving year after year more and more tourists attracted by the medicinal properties of its hot springs. Each season it received almost 25,000 tourists who traveled to Epecuén to enjoy its medicinal waters.
To take a real dimension of the importance of the place, we must take into account how far it is from the big cities and the means of transportation available at that time.
In addition to the hot springs, a large fresh water pool had been built on the shore of the lake to satisfy the tastes and demands of all visitors.
Other developments such as gastronomy, coffee shops, bars and the production of handicraft products were growing in the tourist village.
As Villa Epecuén grew, the weather played a dirty trick as a period of several years of drought caused the lake to gradually begin to lose its usual level of water causing fear in the local inhabitants.
Fueron pasando los años y lo que en principio fue un pequeño pueblo creció a pasos agigantados.
A partir de los años 60 comenzó a vivir sus años de esplendor recibiendo año tras año a mayor cantidad de turistas atraídos por las propiedades medicinales de sus aguas termales. En cada temporada recibía a casi 25.000 turistas que se desplazaban hacia Epecuén para disfrutar de sus aguas medicinales.
Para tomar una real dimensión de la importancia del lugar, debemos tener en cuenta lo alejado que está de las grandes ciudades y los medios de transporte disponibles en aquella época.
Además de las aguas termales, sobre la costa del lago se había construído una gran pileta de agua dulce para satisfacer los gustos y demandas de todos los visitantes.
Otros desarrollos como el gastronómico, las confiterías, bares y producción de productos artesanales fueron creciendo en la Villa Turística
A medida que Villa Epecuén crecía, el clima jugaba una mala pasada ya que de un período de varios años de sequía hacían que el lago poco a poco comenzara a perder su nivel habitual de agua causando temor en los habitantes del lugar.
Thus, in 1975 it was decided to create the Ameghino Canal, a great engineering work, which would derive water from other lagoons, thus ensuring the sustainability of all water bodies. Years later, a second canal "Canal Aliviador" was built, which would derive water from other tributaries and would collaborate with the water supply.
As I always say, the processes that occur in nature tend to self-regulate themselves, since they move in cycles.
Thus, in the 80's, a period of abundant rains began, recovering the lagoons with good levels.
The year 1985 was a year of heavy rains, so that in the course of three months it rained as much as in a normal year, raising the water levels of the lagoons in a worrying way. We must take into account that this region is characterized as one of the main agricultural and cattle raising regions of the country, so the floods would cause great economic losses in several cities of the province.
In November 1985, after heavy rains in the city of Guaminí, the floodgates were opened without warning and the water began to flow into the rest of the chained lagoons, ending all the flow in Lake Epecuén.
Fue así que en el año 1975 se decide la creación del Canal Ameghino, una gran obra de ingeniería, que derivaría agua de otras lagunas asegurando así la sustentabilidad de todos los espejos de agua. Años más tarde se construye un segundo canal "Canal Aliviador" que derivaría agua de otros afluentes y colaboraría con la provisión de agua.
Como siempre digo, los procesos que se dan en la naturaleza tienden a autorregularse por sí solos, ya que se mueven en ciclos.
Fue así que ya en los años´80 comienza un período de abundantes lluvias recobrando las lagunas con buenos niveles.
El año 1985 fue un año de muchas lluvias, de tal manera que en el transcurso de tres meses llovió lo mismo que en un año normal subiendo los niveles de agua de las lagunas de manera preocupante. Tengamos en cuenta que esta región se caracteriza por ser una de las principales agricolas ganaderas del país, por lo cual las inundaciones causaría grandes pérdidas económicas de varias ciudades de la provincia.
El mes de noviembre de 1985 tras intensas lluvias en la ciudad de Guaminí, abre las compuertas sin previo aviso y el agua comienza a derivar al resto de las lagunas encadenadas, terminando todo el flujo en el Lago Epecuén.
On November 10, 1985, after heavy rains, and with the floodgates of Guaminí open, the water level began to rise very quickly. The pressure of the water entering Lake Epecuén ended up cracking the embankment that had been built to prevent flooding and the water levels quickly began to rise over the town. Alarmed by the situation, the inhabitants evacuated their houses taking few belongings with them and those who had two-storey houses moved their valuables to the second level, as they thought that in a few days the water level would drop and they would be able to resume their usual rhythm of life.
Unfortunately, the water level continued to rise and in less than a week the town was 4 meters underwater.
The situation was so terrible that a small town called Carhué built a large embankment to avoid the same fate as Epecuén. Thank God Carhué did not suffer and was not hit by the floods, but they were in danger for many years if the embankment gave way to the pressure of the lake.
According to what the guide who gave us the talk told us, the decision to open the floodgates in the city of Guaminí was taken unilaterally, without giving notice, since the fields of the aforementioned city belonged to members of the aristocracy. In short, it was an arbitrary decision not to put the fields of powerful people at risk, even at the cost of leaving an entire town under water.
El 10 de noviembre del año 1985, después de lluvias muy intensas, y con las compuertas abiertas de Guaminí el nivel del agua comenzó a subir de manera muy rápida. La presión del agua que entraba al Lago Epecuén termina por fisurar el terraplén que se había construído para evitar inundaciones y rápidamente los niveles de agua comienzan a avanzar sobre el pueblo. Alertados por la situación y sus habitantes evacuaron sus casas llevándose pocas pertenencias y quienes tenían casas de dos plantas subieron las cosas de valor al segundo nivel, ya que pensaban que en el transcurso de unos días el nivel de agua descendería y podrían retomar sus habitual ritmo de vida.
Lamentablemente el nivel de agua siguió creciendo y en menos de una semana el pueblo se encontraba 4 metros debajo del agua
Fue tan terrible la situación que una pequeña ciudad llamada Carhué construyó un gran terraplén para evitar tener el mismo destino de Epecuén. Gracias a Dios Carhué no sufrió no fue alcanzado por las inundaciones, pero estuvieron durante muchos años en peligro si el terraplén cedía ante la presión del Lago.
Por lo que nos contaba la guía que nos dio la charla, la de decisión de abrir las compuertas en la ciudad de Guaminí se tomó de manera unilateral, sin dar aviso ya que los campos de la mencionada ciudad pertenecían a miembros de la aristocracia. En definitiva respondió a una decisión arbitraria para no poner en riesgo los campos de personas poderosas, aún a costa de dejar a un pueblo entero bajo el agua.
The flood had very serious consequences, not only from the economic point of view, but also from the environmental point of view.
On the one hand, the citizens of the Villa Turística saw how in just a matter of a few hours they lost everything they had, and their history was under water as well as their houses and businesses. Many people died of sadness and heart attacks as a consequence of what happened.
On the other hand, from the environmental point of view, the entry of so much fresh water dramatically changed the composition of the water of Lake Epecuén and consequently its healing properties.
The birds that inhabited its shores migrated to other destinations and the vegetation that characterized the ecosystem was salinized, a state similar to petrification.
In 2012, after several years of drought, the water began to evaporate, considerably lowering the water level and revealing a desolate landscape.
The town that was beginning to emerge was totally destroyed, in ruins, corroded by the salinity levels of the water. Only a few buildings managed to remain standing and they were those located in the highest parts of the town.
La inundación tuvo gravísimas consecuencias, no solo desde el punto de vista económico, sino también desde el punto de vista ambiental.
Por un lado los ciudadanos de la Villa Turística vieron como en solo cuestión de pocas horas perdieron todo lo que tenían, y su historía quedo debajo del agua al igual que sus casas y comercios. Muchas personas murieron de tristeza y de ataques al corazón como consecuencia de lo sucedido.
Por otro lado, desde el punto de vista ambiental, el ingreso de tanta agua dulce cambió de manera dramática la composición del agua del Lago Epecuén y en consecuencia de sus propiedades curativas.
Las aves que habitaban sus costas emigraron hacia otros destinos y la vegetación que caracterizaba al ecosistema quedo salinizada, un estado similar a la petrificación.
En el año 2012 tras varios años de sequía el agua comenzó a evaporarse bajando de forma considerable el nivel del agua dejando al descubierto un paisaje desolador.
El pueblo que comenzaba a emerger estaba totalmente destruido, en ruinas, corroído por los niveles de salinidad del agua. Solo unas pocas construcciones lograron mantenerse en pie y fueron las que estaban situadas en los lugares más elevados del pueblo.
Walking the streets of Epecuén knowing all the suffering it meant for many people, it is inevitable that we are not invaded by sadness for a few moments. In spite of this, I believe that it is important to visit places like these to give them visibility, so as not to let them die in oblivion.
One of the things that caught our attention is that in houses that are completely demolished, only the frames of the doors and windows made of wood remain standing, a product of the salinization process, which gives them great resistance.
Regarding the environment, a few years ago it began to be noticed that during the winters the shores of the lake began to turn white again due to the crystallization of sodium sulfate with the cold, which marked the recovery of the medicinal properties of the water. Many species of birds returned to visit the place and today it has a large and stable population of flamingos.
It is evident that little by little nature is restoring the imbalances that occur and tend to return to normal.
Caminar las calles de Epecuén sabiendo todo el sufrimiento que significó para muchas personas, es inevitable que no nos invada la tristeza por unos instantes. A pesar de ello creo que ir a conocer sitios como estos es importante para darles visibilidad, para no dejarlas morir en el olvido.
Una de las cosas que nos llamó mucho la atención es que en casas que están totalmente derribadas solo quedan en pie los marcos de las puertas y ventanas hechas en madera, producto del proceso de salinización lo cual le otorga una gran resistencia.
Respecto a la medio ambiente hace unos años comenzó a notarse que durante los inviernos las costas del lago comenzaron a teñirse nuevamente de blanco producto de la cristalización del sulfato de sodio con el frío, lo cual marcaba la recuperación de las propiedades medicinales del agua. Muchas especies de aves volvieron a visitar el lugar y al día de hoy tiene una gran población estable de flamencos.
Queda a la vista que poco a poco la naturaleza restablece los desequilibrios que se producen y tienden a volver a la normalidad.
It was really a wonderful afternoon where I could not only contemplate the place without that great sadness that caused me the first time I went, but I could also learn more in detail what happened in that wonderful place.
Epecuén is a magical place where you can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets where the sun hides inside the lake. The landscape of the ruins and the salinized trees give us a beautiful postcard that we will never forget.
I felt very good to take my family to visit the place because I feel that together we will help to keep Epecuén alive through time and thus ensure that the suffering of many people has not been forgotten.
I hope you have enjoyed accompanying me on this trip full of mixed feelings and a lot of information that until now I did not know.
Fue realmente una tarde maravillosa donde no solo pude contemplar el lugar sin esa gran tristeza que me causó la primera vez que fui, sino que también pude conocer más en detalle lo acontecido en aquel maravilloso lugar
Epecuén es un lugar mágico donde se pueden disfrutar de los más lindos atardeceres en los que el Sol se esconde dentro del lago. El paisaje de las ruinas y los árboles salinizados nos regalan una hermosa postal que jamás hemos de olvidar.
Me sentí muy bien de llevar a mi familia a conocer el lugar porque siento que entre todos ayudaremos a mantener vivo a Epecuén a través del tiempo y de esa manera lograr que el sufrimiento de muchas personas no haya quedado en el olvido.
Espero hayan disfrutado acompañándome en este viaje plagado de sensaciones encontradas y de mucha información que hasta el momento desconocía.
