There is a small cafe that overhangs the Tamagawa river in far Western Tokyo.
I've been meaning to get back to for years and I finally did it Monday.
The cafe is called Gallery Poppo. It's one of several places up in these mountains that offer seating on or near the river and the view is amazing.
It's a great spot to either grab a coffee before or after your hike or to come and grab meal or dessert and just enjoy nature.
The view comes with a price though. A coffee will set you back $6. A slice of pumpkin or chocolate cake is also $6. I opted for just a coffee and I think it was worth it, especially after hiking for about 5 kilometers. My feet needed a rest and I needed to relax and digest the day I had just experienced.
Getting there is half of the fun. You can either hike in along the Tamagawa river from Shiromaru Lake or take the train to Hatonosu station. Either way offers really cool views.
Coming in from Shiromaru Lake across the suspension bridge.
Coming down from the station you pass by several waterfalls and abandoned hotels.
This route will take you below the cafe along the river and then up a path and some stairs. The views are one of a kind.
So if you are ever looking for a place to get away from it all while in Tokyo, check out Gallery Poppo in Okutama, Hatonosu station. It's run by an old lady who treats you like you are a guest in her home. The website is here: http://www.gallerypoppo.com
Happy travels!
