Now in its first centennial as a national park, the Grand Canyon "is much more than an Arizona treasure, it's a national treasure that attracts visitors from all over the world," state Governor Doug Ducey assures Efe.
The geology of the Grand Canyon area represents one of the most complete rock formations anywhere on Earth, demonstrating a period of nearly 2 billion years of [[earth]] history in that part of North America. The largest layer of sedimentary rocks exposed in the Grand Canyon and in the Grand Canyon National Park area date from 200 million years to 2000 million years old. Most accumulated in warm, shallow seas and on nearby long-defunct shorelines. Marine and terrestrial sediments are represented, including fossilized sand dunes from a now-extinct desert.
