Hail to the Hive!

Nestled in the Wiltshire countryside is a quaint little Village of Avebury and apart from the cutesie old British phone boxes

And dressed up in knitwear post boxes

Which are very cute by the way

and the lovely English country village setting. Apart from all that, is a deep deep history going back to the neolithic age 6000 years ago.

Avebury has a Neolithic stone circle or a 'henge'. A henge is what they call a construction of a earthwork from the Neolithic age often accompanied by either stone or wood circles. In this case stone.

As it is quite a large circle it is hard to comprehend from the ground level.

From the air we can clearly see the circular bank and ditch and the remainging stones positioned around the edge.

And there is a footpath along the rim of the bank offering splending views of both the site and the countryside beyond.

It's rare these days to have such easy ( and free ) access to a monument such as this. You are able to walk around and touch the stones which you used to be able to do at Stone Henge ( not far away) but no longer can.

A few hundred years ago a settlement that became the village here sprang up amongst the stones and this has meant there is a road running right through it. I'm pretty sure the builders 6000 years ago never envisaged this.

Despite this it is still a wonderful day out and in some weird way adds to the charm of the place not to mention making it easily accesible. There's a bus stop literally in the middle of the circle.

Apparently excavations found a skeleton under the stone pictured above but he was not from the times when it was built. No, unfortunately the poor bugger got crushed under it a few hundred years back when it fell over. Bugger, that's bad luck indeed.

Both @millycf1976 and myself had a lovely day walking amongst the ancient site, taking photos and marveling at the sheer age of it. I am sure the stonework would have looked much different but with 6000 years of British weather they wouldn't have remained as intact as anything you see in for instance Egypt.

But from the air you really see and can imagine, how amazing this site actually is and must have been all that time ago.
