Al levantarme en la mañana muy temprano, a la par del amanecer y con un placentero silencio alrededor, salí de la carpa a contemplar aquel paisaje y me pregunté si todo lo que había vivido los días anteriores era real, estaba allí parada frente a la imponente pared del tepuy Roraima y aún me parecía un sueño.
Day 3 / Día 3
The time had come to climb it, if you read the previous publication you will know that we had already been hiking for two days to reach its base and on the third day we would finally reach its summit.
Había llegado el momento de subirlo, si leyeron la publicación anterior sabrán que ya llevábamos dos días de excursión hasta llegar a su base y al tercer día finalmente alcanzaríamos su cima.
We were told to have breakfast, there were arepas, coffee, fruits, and then I went back to the tent and put all my things in the backpack, again we had to pick up everything because our camp for the next two days was going to be at the top of Roraima.
Nos avisaron para desayunar, había arepas, café, frutas, y luego volví a la carpa y guardé todas mis cosas en la mochila, nuevamente debíamos recoger todo porque nuestro campamento los próximos dos días iba a estar en la cima del Roraima.
We started the ascent at about 7:30 am, Marcos, the main guide, told us that we should be arriving in about three hours. He was in the front and in the middle and back were the other guides and porters of the group, looking out for all of us. The climb to this plateau-like mountain starts on a narrow path with lush vegetation which you enter using your arms and legs because it is steep, then the slope continues although somewhat less steep but as there is a lot of moisture and stones is good to go carefully to avoid slipping.
Comenzamos el ascenso como a las 7:30 am, Marcos, el guía principal, nos dijo que en unas tres horas ya deberíamos estar llegando. Él iba adelante y en el medio y atrás estaban los demás guías y porteadores del grupo, pendientes de todos nosotros. La subida hacia esta montaña tipo meseta inicia en un estrecho sendero con frondosa vegetación al cual ingresas usando tus brazos y piernas porque es empinado, luego la inclinación continúa aunque algo menos abrupta pero como hay mucha humedad y piedras es bueno ir con cuidado para evitar resbalones.
The road of about 3 km that leads to the summit of Roraima is known as "the ramp" because it has that shape, it's in one of the cliffs or walls of the tepui and it is natural, it wasn't opened by humans.
El camino de unos 3 Km que lleva a la cumbre del Roraima es conocido como “la rampa” debido a que tiene esa forma, está en uno de los acantilados o paredes del tepuy y es natural, no fue abierta por los humanos.
Again each of the people in the group went at their own pace, in many of the sections I was alone for a while, between the silence and the sounds of the environment, such as the drops of water falling of some stones or the wind moving some plants, in this dense rainforest there is a lot of endemic vegetation, that is, that only grows in this part of the planet.
Nuevamente cada una de las personas del grupo iba a su ritmo, en muchos de los tramos estuve unos ratos sola, entre el silencio y los sonidos del entorno, como las gotas de agua que caían por algunas piedras o el viento que movía algunas plantas, en este tupido bosque húmedo hay mucha vegetación endémica, es decir que sólo crece en este lugar del planeta.
When I had about two hours climbing it started to rain and I quickly took out my raincoat and lowered the pace to be much more careful at every step, I didn't want to slip on those stones and as I didn't want to get my camera wet, I didn't take many pictures here.
Cuando tenía como dos horas subiendo comenzó a llover y rápidamente saqué mi impermeable y bajé el ritmo para tener mucho más cuidado a cada paso, no quería resbalar por esas piedras y como tampoco quería mojar mi cámara, no tomé muchas fotos por aquí.
After a while one of the porters of the group went ahead of me and told me that the so-called "Pass of Tears" was coming, which the guide had told us about, perhaps the only really dangerous part of the ascent because it is quite steep, with some loose rocks and also because you have to climb it through a waterfall that although it's not very abundant because it is semi-permanent, it can still make you slip if you are not very careful.
Al rato uno de los porteadores del grupo se me adelantó y me dijo que ya venía el llamado “Paso de las Lágrimas”, del cual nos había comentado el guía, quizás la única parte realmente peligrosa del ascenso por ser bastante inclinada, con algunas rocas sueltas y además por tener que escalarla atravesando una caída de agua que aunque no es muy abundante por ser semi-permanente, igual puede hacer que te resbales si no vas con sumo cuidado.
Further ahead the weather suddenly changed and when you looked up you could see a patch of blue sky next to some big black rocks. It is common here that it rains, the sun comes out, it gets cloudy again and so on.
Más adelante el clima cambió de repente y al alzar la mirada se podía ver un pedazo de cielo azul junto a unas grandes piedras negras. Es común aquí que llueva, salga el sol, se vuelva a nublar y así sucesivamente.
As I approached the rocks, a light mist passed as if it were a sliding curtain, and little by little a first landscape of the summit of Roraima revealed itself to me.
Al ir acercándome a las piedras una ligera neblina pasó como si fuera una cortina corrediza, y poco a poco se reveló ante mí un primer paisaje de la cumbre del Roraima.
At every glance around me the rock formations were getting stranger and stranger, not to mention the ground, a beautiful layer of pink sand.
En cada vistazo a mi alrededor las formaciones rocosas eran cada vez más extrañas y ni hablar del suelo, una hermosa capa de arena rosada.
The tepui or Roraima mountain belongs to the Guiana Shield, according to studies, the oldest geographical area on Earth (4 billion years old), which extends over 2 million 200 thousand km2 through the territories of six countries: Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. This area was part of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana, to which Africa and South America belonged and which fragmented some 150 million years ago, giving way to the Atlantic Ocean.
El tepuy o monte Roraima pertenece al Macizo o Escudo Guayanés, según estudios la zona geográfica más vieja de la Tierra (4 mil millones de años), que se extiende con sus más de 2 millones 200 mil Km2 por territorios de seis países: Venezuela, Brasil, Colombia, Guyana, Surinam y Guayana Francesa. Esta área era parte del antiguo supercontinente Gondwana, al que pertenecían África y Suramérica y el cual se fragmentó hace unos 150 millones de años dando paso al Océano Atlántico.
At 2,810 meters above sea level, Roraima is the highest of the 20 tepuis in Canaima National Park and covers an area of more than 30 km2. It was formed with layers of sandstone rocks about 1.8 billion years ago, in the Precambrian era, the first and longest historical stage of the Earth.
Con sus 2.810 metros sobre el nivel del mar, el Roraima es el tepuy más alto de los 20 que están dentro del Parque Nacional Canaima y tiene una superficie de más de 30 km2. Se formó con capas de rocas areniscas hace unos 1.800 millones de años, en la era precámbrica, primera y más larga etapa histórica de la Tierra.
About two or three people from my group were there when I got to the top at about 10:00 a.m., and we all had a look of astonishment and fascination on our faces by the out-of-this-world scenery around us. We sat down to rest on the rocks while we waited for the rest of the people.
Unas dos o tres personas de mi grupo estaban allí cuando yo llegué a la cima, como a las 10:00 de la mañana, y todos teníamos cara de asombro y fascinación por el paisaje fuera de este mundo que nos rodeaba. Nos sentamos a descansar en las piedras mientras esperábamos al resto de la gente.
Then we walk for about 20 minutes between a plain of stones and sparse vegetation until we reach our "hotel", one of the nine places called this way in the tepui because the camp is installed there, it's a natural cavern.
Luego caminamos unos 20 minutos entre una planicie de piedras negras y escasa vegetación hasta llegar a nuestro “hotel”, uno de los nueve lugares llamados así en el tepuy ya que allí se instala el campamento, es una caverna natural.
In front of us we could see the "Maverick", it is the highest point of Roraima and they gave it that name because seen from afar it has the shape of a car.
Frente a nosotros podíamos ver el “Maverick”, es el punto más alto del Roraima y le pusieron ese nombre porque visto de lejos tiene la forma de un carro.
While the guys from the agency were setting up the tents and stuff, we took the opportunity to explore the area around our "hotel" a bit.
Mientras los chicos de la agencia instalaban las carpas y las demás cosas, nosotros aprovechamos para explorar un poco el área alrededor de nuestro “hotel”.
At about 12:00 noon with the camp set up, lunch was prepared for us, we ate, and a little later we went out to explore the surface of Roraima, astonishing places that I will show you in the next post.
Como a las 12:00 del mediodía con el campamento armado, nos prepararon el almuerzo, comimos, y un rato después salimos a explorar la superficie del Roraima, asombrosos lugares que les mostraré en la siguiente publicación.
