One thing was already clear to us before booking our trip to Hurghada: If we were going to Egypt, then we also wanted to visit the country's touristic and cultural highlight. Of course I'm talking about the world-famous pyramids of Giza. But is it even possible to reach this fascinating sight in a reasonably relaxed and cheap way from Hurghada? Yes, definitely! And in this post I want to tell you how, because our two-day trip from Hurghada to the pyramids was an unforgettable adventure!
Eines stand für uns bereits vor der Buchung unserer Reise nach Hurghada fest: Wenn wir schon nach Ägypten fliegen, dann wollen wir auch das touristische und kulturelle Highlight des Landes besuchen. Natürlich spreche ich von den weltberühmten Pyramiden von Gizeh. Doch ist es überhaupt möglich, diese faszinierende Sehenswürdigkeit einigermaßen entspannt und günstig von Hurghada aus zu erreichen? Ja, definitiv! Und in diesem Beitrag möchte ich euch erzählten wie, denn unser zweitägiger Ausflug von Hurghada zu den Pyramiden war ein unvergessliches Abenteuer!
Only a five-hour drive according to Google Maps - that sounds doable, I thought before I started my research for this trip. And indeed, there are even organised day trips from Hurghada to Cairo. But what I read about it put me off: You start at midnight and the drive takes 10 hours because tourists are collected from countless hotels on the way. In Cairo you are then rushed from one sight to another, you get a bad lunch and make unnecessarily long stops at souvenir shops that cooperate with the tour operators. For the pyramids themselves, you then have only one hour in the blazing afternoon sun before arriving back in Hurghada after another 10 hours of driving and a total of 24 hours. No, thanks! That was not an option for us. Flights between Hurghada and Cairo on the other hand are pretty expensive. Luckily, I found a YouTube video of a couple who simply used a public bus and spent a night in Giza. So I came across the website of "Go-Bus", booked two tickets in the "Elite Business Class" and we were ready to go.
Nur fünf Stunden Fahrt laut Google Maps – das klingt doch machbar, dachte ich, bevor ich mit meinen Recherchen für diesen Ausflug begann. Und tatsächlich gibt es sogar organisierte Tagesausflüge von Hurghada nach Kairo. Doch was ich darüber las, schreckte mich ab: Man startet um Mitternacht und die Fahrt dauert 10 Stunden, da unterwegs von unzähligen Hotels Touristen eingesammelt werden. In Kairo wird man dann von einer Sehenswürdigkeit zur anderen gehetzt, bekommt ein schlechtes Mittagessen und macht unnötig lange Stops bei Souvenir-Shops, die mit den Reise-Veranstaltern kooperieren. Für die Pyramiden selbst hat man dann nur eine einzige Stunde in der glühenden Nachmittagssonne, bevor man nach weiteren 10 Stunden Fahrt und insgesamt 24 Stunden wieder in Hurghada ankommt. Nein, danke! Das war keine Option für uns. Flüge zwischen Kairo und Hurghada sind wiederum ziemlich teuer. Zum Glück fand ich ein YouTube-Video von einem Pärchen, das einfach einen öffentlichen Bus nutzte und in Gizeh übernachtete. So stieß ich auf die Website von "Go-Bus", buchte zwei Tickets in der "Elite Business Class" schon konnte unsere Reise losgehen.
The bus journey cost us just under €55 for two people return and included comfortable seats, an infotainment system, WiFi, air conditioning, snacks and drinks. Unfortunately, you always have to expect unpleasant surprises in Egypt. So our seats were wet and the WiFi didn't work any better than the touch screens. Fortunately, we had bought an Egyptian sim card. So the last two points didn't bother us much and we got two pieces of cardboard for the wet seats. This sounds ridiculous at first, but it was not uncomfortable and a very simple, creative and effective solution, I think. The bus also stopped halfway for 20 minutes at a gas station with shops and sanitary facilities. After a total of 7 hours, we arrived in Cairo city centre on time. Here we grabbed an Uber (works perfectly in Cairo, unlike in Hurghada) and for the equivalent of 5€ we reached our accommodation in Giza after another half hour's drive.
Die Busfahrt kostete uns hin und zurück knapp 55€ für zwei Personen und inkludierte komfortable Sitze, ein Infotainment-System, WiFi, Klimaanlage sowie Snacks und Getränke. Leider muss man in Ägypten immer mit unangenhmen Überraschungen rechnen. So waren unsere Sitze nass und das WiFi funktionierte genauso wenig, wie die Bildschirme. Zum Glück hatten wir eine ägyptische Simkarte gekauft. So störten uns die letzten beiden Punkte wenig und für die feuchten Sitze bekamen wir zwei Stücke Karton. Das hört sich erstmals lächerlich an, war aber nicht unbequem und eine sehr einfache, kreative und wirkungsvolle Lösung, wie ich finde. Der Bus hielt auf halber Strecke auch für 20 Minuten an einer Tankstelle mit Shops und sanitären Anlagen. Nach insgesamt 7 Stunden kamen wir pünktlich im Stadtzentrum von Kairo an. Hier schnappten wir uns ein Uber (funktioniert in Kairo im Gegensatz zu Hurghada einwandfrei) und für umgerechnet 5€ erreichten wir nach einer weiteren halben Stunde Fahrt unsere Unterkunft in Giza.
How long did I research in advance to find the perfect accommodation. But it really paid off. We were warmly welcomed by the hosts and moved into our cosy, air-conditioned room with a balcony and a view of the pyramids. Even lying in bed, we could see the pyramids. How crazy! We were just blown away. Can you believe we only paid $25 for the night here and it even included a delicious breakfast?
Wie lange recherchierte ich im Vorfeld, um die perfekte Unterkunft zu finden. Doch es zahlte sich wirklich aus. Wir wurden von den Gastgebern herzlich empfangen und bezogen unser gemütliches, klimatisiertes Zimmer mit Balkon und Blick auf die Pyramiden. Sogar im Bett liegend konnten wir die Pyramiden sehen. Wie verrückt! Wir waren einfach nur begeistert. Könnt ihr glauben, dass wir nur 25$ für die Übernachtung hier bezahlten und sogar ein leckeres Frühstück inkludiert war?
After a short rest, we ventured out onto the streets of Giza. It was dirty, noisy, sometimes it smelled bad, but I was fascinated by the atmosphere. Because of the horses, camels and donkeys on the streets, you feel as if you are in another, long-gone time. We filled our hungry bellies with fast food at the KFC around the corner. No experiments, after all, we wanted to get up early the next day and be fit to explore the pyramids. The view from the KFC of the setting sun with the silhouettes of the pyramids in front was almost surreal.
Nach kurzer Erholung wagten wir uns auf die Straßen von Gizeh. Es war dreckig, laut, teilweise roch es übel, doch mich faszinierte diese Stimmung. Aufgrund der Pferde, Kamele und Esel auf den Straßen, fühlt man sich wie in einer anderen, längst vergangenen Zeit. Unsere hungrigen Bäuche füllten wir mit Fast Food beim KFC um die Ecke. Keine Experimente, schließlich wollten wir am nächsten Tag früh aufstehen und fit für die Erkundung der Pyramiden sein. Der Ausblick vom KFC auf die untergehende Sonne mit den Silhouetten der Pyramiden davor war fast schon surreal.
Now the highlight of the day was on the agenda: The sunset from the roof terrace of our hotel. We could hardly believe it, but we had the whole terrace to ourselves. What can I say, just look at the pictures. We were speechless. We will probably not forget this view so quickly. Afterwards, we were able to watch the daily light show, for which you usually have to pay an entrance fee. It was nice to watch, but we would have imagined it to be more spectacular.
Nun stand das Highlight des Tages auf dem Programm: Der Sonnenuntergang von der Dachterrasse unseres Hotels. Wir konnten es kaum glauben, doch wir hatten die ganze Terrasse für uns allein. Was soll ich sagen, seht euch einfach die Bilder an. Wir waren sprachlos. Diesen Ausblick werden wir wohl nicht so schnell vergessen. Hier konnten wir im Anschluss auch die tägliche Lichter-Show ansehen, für die man sonst Eintritt bezahlten muss. Diese war nett anzusehen, wir hätten sie uns aber spektakulärer vorgestellt.
