Rimetea (Alba county, Romania), the authentic Transylvanian village that has frozen in time
Hello travelers
Through my previous blogs I have shared with you some amazing sights in the village of Rimetea, Alba county, Romania, here it is after Let's explore the Ethnographic Museum in the village where the sun rises twice , RIMETEA, ALBA county, ROMANIA(if you haven't seen this blog you can do it here), Water mill in Rimtea village, Alba Iulia county, the oldest water mill in the Apuseni Mountains, Romania(if you haven't seen this blog you can do it here), the time has come to share with you the authentic Transylvanian village, Rimetea.
As I've written in other blogs we arrived here by car, it was just the beginning of the tourist season, so we were expecting not to be very many tourists, but here we found the opposite, the village was suffocated by cars, and we hardly found a parking space on one of the village streets.
The village is absolutely amazing it is divided into the lower part and the upper part, we visited both parts.
We even discovered the narrowest street in the village that connects the two parts of the village.
The village streets are not paved, some of them are made of earth and others are paved with stone.
Walking through the village streets, it's hard to decide what to look at, the white-painted houses with green shutters or the Piatra Secuiului mountain towering somewhere behind the houses.
At every step you'll find something to buy and, yes, you should leave with a souvenir, there are so many handmade things.
Before we go any further I will leave below some information I found about the village of Rimetea.
The oldest known document today mentions the medieval locality for the first time after the Mongolian invasion of 1241-42, namely in 1257 under the name Magyarized by Toroczcko (Toroțco) having the Romanian form Trascau. It remains an important iron processing center thanks to the ferry ore deposits in the area. Iron exploitation and the craft of blacksmithing have led to a continuous development over several centuries, being a time the largest iron weapons production center in Christian Europe. In 1493 the town received the rank of fair ("opdum"), and in 1666, amid the development of ore extraction and the craft of the blacksmith, Rimetea becomes a city ("civitas"). If in the 15th century there was a single blacksmith in which agricultural tools were produced, two centuries later (in the second half of the 17th century and in the first half of the 18th century), the exploitation of ore and iron processing reached its peak. In 1716, due to the 16 ore melting furnaces and the 16 hydraulic hammers, Rimetea was one of the main iron processing centers in Transylvania, and the agricultural tools produced here were the most famous in the principality and in the east of the Hungarian kingdom, being sold by merchants in important markets, such as BrasovBrașov, BistrițaBistrița, Arad and Debrecen. The competition of the smelters of Hunedoara and Resita (which developed a lot in the second half of the 18th century) and the decrease of the ore reserves (which were depleted in the 19th century) determined the total decline of the biligethronage in Rimetea and the sliding of the locality in rurality. The trasc is the host of some animal fairs and grains of zonal importance.
On the Iosefin Map of Transylvania from 1769-1773 (Secution 124), the village appears as "Thorotzko". Along the north-occurrency valley (waves flowing to Aries la BuruBuru), about 15 pistacks șteampuriof processing iron ores extracted from the area appear on the Iosefina Map.Eisen Hamer Schmeltz Stamph Mühlen.
I hope you enjoyed a little bit of the history of this village so come with me and let's take a few more steps on the dusty village streets.
Know that here besides visiting the village you can also make a hike to Piatra Secuiului mountain, about 4-5 hours.
