On a sunny afternoon, we decided to take a little detour during our shopping trip to Iloilo City. The primary mission was simple: purchase school supplies for my daughter, but knowing how much she’s obsessed with history and geography, we couldn’t resist making a quick stop at Plaza Libertad,, one of Iloilo’s most iconic landmarks.
It was a short drive from Parola Wharf, where we had just enjoyed the scenic views of the coastline. We hopped onto a modernized jeepney, the kind that’s become a symbol of the city’s push toward a more eco-friendly future. The smooth, quiet ride felt almost like a breath of fresh air compared to the older, louder jeepneys we’ve known. The vehicles are part of the ongoing modernization efforts that aim to reduce emissions and improve urban mobility. Such an admirable change for a growing city like Iloilo.
As we approached Plaza Libertad, I could feel my daughter’s excitement growing. She had read about this historic plaza countless times in her school books and was eager to see it up close. Her fascination with history and geography makes these little stops extra special. We were amazed by the improvements made to the area. Gone were the high fences that once enclosed the plaza,, now, the open space invites visitors to appreciate its beauty from afar. The revitalization efforts have transformed the plaza into a more accessible and welcoming environment for both locals and tourists.
The plaza is beautifully landscaped, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city. You could almost feel the weight of history in the air. The plaza has witnessed centuries of change, from Spanish colonial rule to the present day.
What struck me, however, was how much the plaza has transformed. New features had been added, giving it an even more inviting and vibrant atmosphere. There was a children’s playground, a perfect spot for families to relax while the kids run around and play. The plaza is near a school so this probably the go-to for moms with little kids.
Nearby, I noticed some sleek, modern exercise equipment. An inclusive addition that encourages health and fitness, making the plaza a hub for wellness as well as history. The space felt more alive, more accessible than I remember from my previous visits. I would've tried it but it was padlocked, not sure why.
The most exciting part, though, was the new lighting. In the past, I remembered jogging here early in the mornings or late evenings, and there were only a few street lamps scattered around. Now, the plaza had been fitted with beautiful, strategic lighting that I imagined would truly make the place come alive at night. I could already picture the glowing lamps casting a warm glow over the plaza, highlighting the monument and the surrounding greenery. It would certainly add more charm to the area, offering a peaceful yet vibrant setting for evening strolls.
And then there was the steam locomotive number 888, proudly standing near the entrance. A nod to Iloilo’s rich industrial past. I smiled as I saw my daughter’s eyes light up as she rushed to examine it. She’s always been fascinated by trains and their history, so standing next to the iron giant felt like a dream come true for her. It was a nice touch, reminding us of the city’s historical connections to the Philippine railway system, and of how even the smallest of details can bring a place’s history alive.
I actually don't know what this is. There are three arms stretching out, each ending in a closed fist, which likely symbolizes strength, unity, and resilience. Possibly honoring Iloilo’s role in the Philippine revolution and the fight for independence. It might also reflect the enduring spirit of different generations standing up for freedom.
