To reach that magical city, the journey was not brief. My family and I took a taxi in the capital, Georgetown, to the river port of Parika, where the boats or canoes leave to reach Bartica. This took us almost 3 hours due to the distance traveled and the wait because of the traffic on the Floating Bridge over the Demerara River. Once in Parika, we rented a boat with a roof and large windows to let in the air.
I can't deny that I started to suffer from some unfortunate seasickness when I felt the splash of water hitting the floor at such speed. But believe me, it was worth every second when we were welcomed by a city known as: The golden door to the jungle of Guyana.
The atmosphere of the city was cheerful, the buildings and streets well preserved, with a certain mysterious yet nostalgic air. A touch between modern and vintage. Its commerce was simple, popular, with typical local foods and drinks offered from kiosks or large, sturdy tents that were by no means improvised, from which you could hear a variety of music genres, from reggae, hip-hop to English ballads.
Although, at a quick glance, one might believe that Bartica is a coastal town, the truth is that it is not, as it is located more than 80 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean. However, it is situated right at the confluence of the Essequibo, Mazaruni, and Cuyuni rivers. For this reason, sport fishing, canoeing, and navigation are some of the favorite activities of visitors and Bartica residents.
As its nickname suggests, it opens the doors to the jungle and its infinite beauty. A rich variety of vegetation and wildlife can be found upon leaving the city, including monkeys, agoutis, capybaras, bats, and some felines like the jaguar, which is also the national animal of Guyana. Being fearful of wildlife, I preferred not to venture into the unknown; I settled for the stories of the locals and the photographs they proudly displayed of their beloved jungle.
As the afternoon was 'dying,' the city took on a more sober, more interesting aspect. The music, commerce, and the coming and going of people continued to be active. But something in the gentle wind blowing against our faces made us want to stay still in one place, simply taking photographs of the last sighs of the sun for that day, of the almost magical color of the water.
That night we ate fried fish and golden potatoes, accompanied by bitter beer, although I confess that at some point, I escaped for a cold and delicious grape wine, prepared with lemon at the moment of drinking it. Then we spent a lot of time listening to the night, looking at the intimidating darkness of the water. The city never went dark, not even when we went to sleep.
Early in the morning, we prepared to return home. The journey back was in silence, as if something very dear to us was left behind. The sun began to paint everything in gold, and I couldn't stop taking pictures of that beauty reflected on the water.

Para llegar hasta esa mágica ciudad, el trayecto no fue breve. Mi familia y yo subimos a un taxi en la Capital, Georgetown, hasta el puerto fluvial de Parika, donde se toman las lanchas o botes para llegar a Bartica. Esto nos tomó un tiempo de casi 3 horas entre la distancia recorrida y la espera a causa del tráfico en el Puente Flotante sobre el Río Demerara. Ya en Parika, alquilamos una lancha con techo y ventanillas amplias para que entrara el aire.
No puedo negarles que comencé a padecer algunos desafortunados mareos cuando sentía el golpe de agua golpear el piso a tanta velocidad. Pero, créanme, valió la pena cada segundo, cuando fuimos recibidos por ciudad conocida como: La puerta dorada o puerta de oro a la selva de Guyana.
El ambiente de la ciudad era alegre, las construcciones y las calles bien conservadas, con cierto aire misterioso y al mismo tiempo nostálgico. Un toque entro lo moderno y lo vintage. Su comercio era sencillo, popular, con comidas y bebidas típicas del lugar que nos ofrecían desde quioscos o carpas grandes y fuertes, para nada improvisadas y desde la cual se podían escuchar variedad de géneros musicales, desde el regué, hip-hop y baladas en inglés.
Aunque, con una mirada rápida, podría creerse que Bartica es un pueblo costero, lo cierto es que no es así, pues se encuentra a más de 80km tierra adentro del océano Atlántico. Sin embargo, sí se encuentra justo en la confluencia de los ríos Esequibo, Mazaruni y Cuyuni. Por este motivo, la pesca deportiva, el piragüismo y la navegación, son algunas de las actividades preferidas de visitantes y barticenses.
Tal como su sobrenombre lo indica, te abre las puertas a la selva y a su belleza infinita. Una variedad rica de vegetación y fauna puedes encontrar al salir de la ciudad. Entre ellos monos, jutías, capibaras, murciélagos y algunos felinos como el jaguar, quien a su vez resulta ser, el animal nacional de Guyana. Temerosa como soy, de la vida salvaje, preferí no adentrarme hacia lo desconocido, me conformé con las historias de los lugareños y las fotografías que mostraban con orgullo de su selva amada.
A medida que fue “muriendo” la tarde, la ciudad adquirió un aspecto más sobrio, más interesante. Continuaba activa la música, el comercio, el ir y venir de personas. Pero algo en el viento que soplaba suavecito en nuestras caras, nos hizo querer quedarnos quietos en un lugar, simplemente tomando fotografías de los últimos suspiros del sol por ese día, del color casi mágico del agua.
Esa noche comimos pescado frito y papas doradas, acompañado por cerveza amarga, aunque confieso que, en algún momento, escapé a por un frío y delicioso vino de uvas, preparado con limón al momento de beberlo. Luego pasamos mucho tiempo escuchando a la noche, mirando la oscuridad intimidante del agua. La ciudad nunca se apagó, ni siquiera cuando fuimos a dormir.
A primera hora de la mañana, nos preparamos para volver a casa. El regreso fue en silencio, como si algo muy nuestro se quedara detrás. El sol comenzaba a teñirlo todo de dorado, y yo no podía parar de hacerle fotos a aquella belleza del reflejo sobre el agua.
