This advice was given to me by my mom at an early age. It's something I never forgot. Even though I didn't know fully what it meant at the time, I came to find out later when I entered the work force.

I was in my early 20s when I got my first job that turned out to be my career. I remember a situation where a co-worker was spreading a rumor she heard about a supervisor. It concerned his personal life. Apparently the supervisor told someone about problems in his marriage and a possible separation.

I was the most recent hire, so I wasn't privy to the most classified rumors. It was a strange environment. By the time the situation reached our group, reportedly the couple had already gotten a divorce in a bitter and violent custody battle.

I didn't know at the time that the co-worker was being considered for a promotion on the same level as the supervisor.

I also don't know the full extent of the situation. However, the co-worker who spread the rumor was awarded the position. The new position entailed working alongside the supervisor who was having marital problems.

When the supervisor discovered who spread the rumor, he immediately alerted human resources and filed a complaint. The one who spread the rumor received a negative mark in her file. Afterwards, her reputation was called into question. When she needed others to attest to her reliability, she realized what she had done.

She also found out that the rumor she was spreading wasn't entire correct. It was too late. The damage had been done.

I've always felt that our boss should never have told anyone about his personal life. I feel he's the one responsible for the rumors that spread like wildfire.

The advice from my mom years before unfolded in front of me. I lived it in real time and saw the consequences of damaging someone.

From that day, anything I heard about anyone else went in one ear and out the other.

En ese momento no sabía que el compañero de trabajo estaba siendo considerado para una promoción al mismo nivel que el supervisor.

Tampoco conozco el alcance total de la situación. Sin embargo, el compañero que difundió el rumor obtuvo el puesto. El nuevo puesto implicaba trabajar junto al supervisor, que tenía problemas matrimoniales.

Cuando el supervisor descubrió quién había difundido el rumor, alertó inmediatamente a recursos humanos y presentó una queja. La que difundió el rumor recibió una marca negativa en su expediente. Después, su reputación quedó en entredicho. Cuando necesitó que otros dieran fe de su fiabilidad, se dio cuenta de lo que había hecho.

También descubrió que el rumor que había difundido no era del todo correcto. El daño ya estaba hecho.

Siempre he pensado que nuestro jefe no debería haber contado a nadie su vida personal. Siento que él es el responsable de los rumores que se extendieron como un reguero de pólvora.
