Humans are so unpredictable and at this stage of my life, I am not surprised at some things people do anymore. A lot of people have asked me severally why I don't get mad at things and my response is always simple, "getting mad because of someone's foolishness is a waste of time."
Instead of getting pissed, I think of the funny part of what they did and just laugh about it. I have lots of these experiences to share but will tell just two and leave the rest for another day so just relax and enjoy.
After trying an exam thrice between 2010-13, I had to give up because it was a pure waste of time to be hitting a rock in a desert and expecting water to gush out from it but before I decided to stop, something happened.
I have a friend who was also trying to get into the Nigerian Army but he didn't want to go through recruit, the plan was to go through the Military University and graduate with rank. He didn't know about this and I was the one who told him about it because I was trying to join the Nigeria Air Force.
A day before the last exam we wrote, I noticed that his dad was speaking to someone about the exam on the phone but in his dialect. I didn't understand but I heard 10,000 naira and NDA exam.
After the call, he spoke to my friend in his dialect and they chatted for about five minutes. They eventually stopped and started speaking English again so when I and my friend stepped out of the house, I asked what was up and he said nothing.
We went for the exam the next day and my mom gave us both transportation fare despite not having enough. The exam passed and we were waiting for our results which came a few weeks later.
I went with the newspaper where to result was published to my friend's place as usual to tell him that they didn't pick us up. I met his dad and my friend at home so I broke the news to him.
He didn't seem bothered and immediately, his dad picked up his phone and called someone. I picked a few words from the conversation and it seemed someone was requesting more money but I didn't know why.
It didn't take long before my friend said he was going to the bank to make a deposit so I went back home. On his way back, he called me and we both went to his place again. His dad started making calls again and told the caller he had paid the money in English.
I was curious because I knew something was going on but I do not know what it was. I and my friend had taken our minds off the results and were just talking about random stuff when his dad screamed from inside the room and we rushed to check on him.
"What happened?" His son asked and the man replied to him in their dialect again.
I just left there since I didn't understand them, it was clear they didn't want me to know what was happening. Later that evening, my friend came to my place and he was really sad. I persuaded him to tell me what was up and he said, someone scammed them.
How?
He said someone wanted to help him get into the Military University and they have been paying the person for some time.
I didn't believe my ear and if truly he would have gotten into the University, he would have left me in the dark. After my friend left my place that day, I laughed so much because it was funny to me why you are paying someone who they don't even know and the fact that they kept it secret made it funnier.
Another experience happened when I accompanied someone to get a phone at Computer Village and I encouraged him to get the kind of phone I was using but he insisted on something bigger which his money wasn't enough. We went around the market but found nothing more than mine and he was frustrated.
On our way out of the market, a guy ran into us and just flashed some phones at him. My guy immediately tapped my shoulder and said we should check the phones. I told him it was not safe but he insisted and I didn't say anything because I didn't want him to think I was against him getting a bigger phone. To cut the story short, he bought soap wrapped in a white handkerchief and I still can't understand how they duped him in the twinkle of an eye. I had stories of people buying soap as phone and it was my first time plus there is no how anyone can tell me that was done with physical eyes.
I watched him shiver as we walked out of the market and pitied him but that didn't hinder me from laughing when we went our separate ways. Although what happened wasn't pleasant but they were too smart and it backfired.
