Okay okay, let's see, I'll tell you:
I can't remember a time in my life when I haven't felt awkward around new people. I've never known how to act around people.
I know it sounds weird to explain but I also know that it's more common than I think... I hope so, because otherwise I'm here talking to myself about something super specific that only happens to me.
Anyway, I'll tell you an example: one day I was walking with my friend in a square, we were talking quietly. Suddenly, we passed by some guys younger than us, teenagers, who were practicing tricks on bicycles.
My friend doesn't know how to ride a bike, so my two neurons sparked and for some reason I still can't figure out, I blurted out the following words:

The boys, all between 14-16 years old, stared at us with a confused look on their faces, turned their backs to us and laughed a bit among themselves, and I felt my friend's claws dig into my arm and pull me out of the situation.
I wish she had pulled me out sooner; I looked like an old lady who wanted to sound funny and "juvenile" and I remembered how uncomfortable I felt at that age when someone would throw that kind of joke.
Ah, the twists and turns life takes.
Another day, not too long ago, I went to an ice cream shop. I ran into a college roommate who was with her husband and baby. I already knew the baby from pictures but had never seen him in person.
I approached them to say hello and the baby was smiling and doing baby things with his mom, who was holding him.
The mom was telling me about her baby, I look at him, and my two brain cells (my god) sparked and I say:

???
There was a little awkward silence and all at once my two neurons sparked and I thought: WHY THE HECK WOULD SHE WANT YOU TO TOUCH HER BABY?! WHY DID YOU SAY THAT?!
She tried to hide her confused face, her husband too, and she was just nice and told me:
Haha, it's fine.
And I: ah well, have a nice meal, byyyeeee.
And I just ran away.
Oh, me and kids.
I am socially awkward around new people, but nothing makes me more uncomfortable than being around children. To me children are like strange beings, aliens, I don't know how to act around them. I don't know how to talk to them, I don't know how to understand them, I don't know how to entertain them, I don't know how to be cute and funny with them.
I am terrible at interacting with children. In fact, I've been told that I talk to them like they're dogs, that I call them like I'm calling a dog. Well, but if they respond, then I understand that I should talk to them that way. It's not my fault.
They also tell me that I talk to them too slowly for them to understand me, as if I think they are stupid.
I don't think they are stupid, in fact I speak slowly because apart from being socially strange, I have dysarthria (which is like being a stutterer)... I mean, I just talk like that so I don't make mistakes.
Socially awkward and stutterer... What a mix.
And with teenagers, it's even worse.
Teenagers are horrible, because they no longer have the innocence of a child, and they know how to look deep into your soul and see your darkest secrets, all your imperfections, all your weaknesses, they know all your secrets with just one look. Teenagers know what you hide, and they have no shame in telling you.
One day, I went with my friend to a store. She asks the saleswoman something and she takes out her phone to look for information. I see that her wallpaper is of a Korean man who I quickly assumed was some famous singer or actor. And again... You know what happened to my two brain cells.... They sparked, and I said:
oh so you like... and I elbow my friend so she can finish the sentence, because I couldn't think of anything else, and my friend says: K-Pop(?)...
The girl sees both of us, laughs like confused and says like:
Ehm, haha, yeah...(?)
Leaving the store, I myself didn't understand what I meant or what I was getting at by asking that.
My two brain cells did not go beyond making the following association:
- Asian on wallpaper -> Korean.
- Korean on wallpaper -> Famous.
- Famous Korean -> Actor or Singer.
- Korean famous actor or singer on unknown girl's phone -> Good way to do small talk with unknown girl to make me look nice.
What my two brain cells still don't understand despite all these experiences, is that I simply... DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO SMALL TALK. I'm horrible, terrible, awful, dreadful, uncomfortable at small talk.
Anyway, I guess unfortunately I'm not the best person to tell you how you can NOT be socially awkward. I try all the time and fail every single time, miserably.
What I can tell you is that:
- Not all Asians have to do K-pop.
- Don't touch other people's babies.
- Don't talk to children like dogs.
And most of all:
DON'T try to act "cool" with teenagers. Trust me: that will only make you look like an old pedophile.

Okey, a ver, les cuento:
No recuerdo algún momento en mi vida en el que no me haya sentido extraña alrededor de gente nueva. Nunca he sabido actuar alrededor de la gente.
Sé que suena raro de explicar pero también sé que es más común de lo que creo... Espero, porque sino estoy aquí hablando sola de algo súper específico que solo me pasa a mí.
Les cuento un ejemplo: un día iba caminando con mi mejor amiga por una plaza, íbamos tranquilas conversando. De repente, pasamos al lado de unos chicos más jóvenes que nosotras, adolescentes, quienes andaban practicando trucos en bicicleta.
Mi amiga no sabe andar en bicicleta, por lo que mis dos neuronas soltaron una chispa y por alguna razón que todavía no logro entender, se me salieron las siguientes palabras:
aY chiCOS enSéÑenlE a ellA quE nO sABe AndAr en Bici
Los chicos, todos entre 14-16 años, se nos quedaron mirando con cara de confusión, nos dieron la espalda y se rieron entre ellos, y sentí cómo las garras de mi amiga se me clavaron en el brazo y me jaló de allí para sacarme de esa situación.
Ojalá me hubiese sacado antes; quedé como una señora que quería sonar graciosa y "juvenil", y recordé lo incómoda que yo me sentía a esa edad cuando alguien lanzaba ese tipo de bromas.
Los giros que da la vida.
Otro día, no hace mucho, fui a una heladería. Me conseguí con una compañera de la Universidad que estaba con su esposo y su bebé. Ya yo conocía al bebé por fotos pero nunca lo había visto en persona.
Me les acerqué para saludarlos y el bebé estaba sonriente y haciendo cosas de bebé con su mamá, que lo cargaba en brazos.
La mamá me estaba hablando de su bebé, yo lo miro, y mis dos neuronas (dios mío) hacen chispa y digo:
JajA nO Lo AgARRo poRqUE tEngO LaS mAnOS suCias
???
Hubo un pequeño silencio incómodo y de una vez mis dos neuronas hicieron chispa y pensé: ¡¿POR QUÉ CARAJO ELLA QUERRÍA QUE TOCARAS A SU BEBÉ?! ¡¿POR QUÉ DIJISTE ESO?!
Ella intentó ocultar su cara de confusión, su esposo también, y solo fue amable y me dijo: jaja, tranquila.
Y yo: ah bueno, que tengan buen provecho, adiooooós.
Y solo huí.
Ay, los niños y yo.
Soy una persona incómoda alrededor de gente nueva, pero nada que me haga sentir más incómoda que estar alrededor de niños. Para mí los niños son como seres extraños, alienígenas, no sé cómo actuar con ellos. No sé cómo hablarles, no sé cómo entenderlos, no sé cómo entretenerlos, no sé cómo ser linda y divertida con ellos.
Se me da fatal interactuar con niños. De hecho, me han dicho que yo les hablo como si fueran perros, que los llamo como si estuviese llamando a un perro. Bueno, pero si ellos responden, yo entonces entiendo que sí hay que hablarles así. No es mi culpa.
También me dicen que les hablo muy despaaaacio como para que me puedan entender, como si yo pensara que son estúpidos.
No pienso que sean estúpidos, en realidad les hablo despacio porque aparte de ser socialmente extraña, tengo disartria (que es como ser tartamuda)... O sea, yo hablo así y ya, para no equivocarme.
Socialmente extraña y tartamuda... Qué combinación.
Y con adolescentes, es aún peor. Los adolescentes son horribles, porque ellos ya no tienen la inocencia de un niño, y saben mirar muy dentro y profundo en tu alma y ven tus más oscuros secretos, todas tus imperfecciones, todas tus debilidades, saben todos tus secretos solo con una mirada. Los adolescentes saben qué ocultas, y no tienen ningún pudor en decírtelo.
Un día, fui con mi amiga a una tienda. Ella le pregunta algo a la vendedora y esta saca su teléfono para buscar información. Yo veo que su fondo de pantalla es de un hombre coreano que rápidamente asumí era algún cantante o actor famoso. Y de nuevo... Ya saben qué pasó con mis dos neuronas... Hicieron chispa, y dije:
JaJa tE gusTA eL... y codeo a mi amiga para que ella termine la frase, porque a mí no se me ocurrió más nada, y mi amiga dice: el K-Pop(?)...
La chica nos ve a ambas, se ríe como confundida y nos dice como:
Ehm, jaja, sí...(?)
Al salir de la tienda, ni yo misma entendí qué quería decir o a dónde quería llegar preguntando eso.
Mis dos neuronas no fueron más allá de hacer la siguiente asociación:
- Asiático en fondo de pantalla -> Coreano.
- Coreano en fondo de pantalla -> Famoso.
- Coreano famoso -> Actor o Cantante.
- Actor o cantante famoso coreano en el teléfono de una chica desconocida -> Buena forma de hacer small talk con la chica desconocida para que yo parezca simpática.
Lo que mis dos neuronas todavía no entienden a pesar de todas estas experiencias, es que simplemente... NO SÉ HACER SMALL TALK. Se me da horrible, fatal, espantoso, incómodo.
En fin, creo que lamentablemente no soy la persona más indicada para decirles cómo pueden NO ser socialmente extraños. Yo lo intento todo el tiempo y fallo cada vez, estrepitosamente.
Lo que sí puedo decirles es que:
- No todos los asiáticos tienen que hacer K-pop.
- No se tocan bebés ajenos.
- No le hablen a los niños como perros.
Y sobre todo:
NO intenten actuar "cool" con los adolescentes. Créanme: eso solo los hará parecer como unos viejos pedófilos.
