Okay, so maybe this strip is geared a little too much to the Gen-X and older crowd. But so be it! Let those uncultured Millenial & Gen-Z whippersnappers look up and discover these iconic cultural references for themselves. They're always on their phones anyway... might as well do something useful with them! 😁
On a side note, ever since learning some Mongolian language (and the Cyrillic alphabet used here that it borrows from Russian) the 'nuclear wessel' line confused me. After all, there's no equivalent 'w' sound in the Russian alphabet, but there IS a 'v' sound. So I could see native Russian speakers pronouncing a word like 'werewolf' as 'verevolf', but seems counterintuitive that 'vessel' would become 'wessel'. It's recently been explained to me from someone who learned Russian that the Russian 'v' is a little different than the English version, so there's a tendency for some native Russian speakers to soften it too much so the 'v' sounds more like a 'w'.
I'd love to ask a native Russian speaker at some point, but recent events aren't exactly making the Russians around here inclined to be talkative (especially to Americans!). Can't say I blame them; recent events are showing many will demonize a people based on the actions of one person. My own take is I probably have much more in common with the average Russian civilian than I do with my own president, and probably the same applies for the average Russian in regards to Putin. But in both countries that seems to be fast becoming a very unpopular (some are saying "treasonous") opinion to have these days.
How does that saying go?... “In a mad world, only the mad are sane” (Akira Kurosawa)
