Like so many people of my generation I grew up watching Scooby-Doo, and I was pleased as punch that I was able to bring my daughter up watching Scooby-Doo as well as reading and collecting Scooby-Doo comics. This time around I am writing about issue #11 of The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries, a 12 issue limited series, so one more issue to go.
This latest issue has The Scooby Gang and Batman solving a mystery at the newly opened Detective Museum in Gotham City (where else?), and dealing with a would be hero known as the Creeper. I'll try and keep the spoilers down to a dull roar. Okay, one spoiler - they solved the mystery.
Ivan Cohen turned in a fun story, and with a couple of twists and turns down memory lane for the gang, and the Creeper being a goofy helper in the mystery. Randy Elliott turned in artwork that remains true to the original characters and Batman back in the early '70s era of the Scooby-Doo team-up series on TV. Carrie Strachan did the colors and Saida Temofonte with Letters rounded out the very talented creative team for this issue.
Back to the story, as it is the opening day of the the Detective Exhibit, celebrating great detectives and writers of mysteries, crediting Edgar Allen Poe as the start of the modern detective story, Wilkie Collins and his two most famous works, The woman in White and The Moonstone. That latter novel intrigues just based on the title alone, and is reputed to have set the ground rules for all modern detective novels. Looks like I'll be putting in on my reading list, as the story sounds very interesting.
And those little details, giving a bit of history of Detective novels, as an excellent idea on the part of the creative team, and introduces their audience to some interesting facts about the genre.
Overall, it is a darn good issue, a real fun read. I'll probably not see this issue again as the daughter unit will hide it away in her collection. Scooby-Doo is one of the reasons she has a big interest in mystery stories, and this adventure will also expand her interest in this genre in further.
There is one down side. The Batman & Scooby-Doo Mysteries is a limited series with only one more issue to go. Which is on my reading stack.
Thanks for stopping by.
